The House in Hateno- (See comments)
“I see Hateno has changed quite a bit since I’ve been here last.” Zelda said as they entered the front gate.
It had only been two weeks since they had defeated Ganon.
They had traveled to Kakariko to discuss their next move with Impa and to take a long deserved rest before they tried to rebuild Hyrule. Impa had suggested that they visit Purah next to have her take a look at the Sheikah Slate. “Maybe if we work together we will be able to figure out a way to upgrade the transportation on the Sheikah Slate, which will make traveling across Hyrule much easier.” Zelda had said.
Link frowned. “What was it like before?”
“Surely you remember Hateno! After all you-“
Zelda trailed off. “I’m sorry, I keep forgetting about your memory. I’m sure that it will return fully… eventually.” She looked around. “It was much smaller and had many less farms. But I’m glad that it is still prospering today.”
Link nodded and they rode along in silence. The sounds of their horses’ hooves and the soft hum of crickets were the only noises in the village.
“It’s much too late to try and talk to Purah today. Perhaps we should stop at the Inn for the night.”
“We could stay at my house.” Link said, suddenly remembering the house he had bought from the Bolson Company months ago. With all of the events that had happened recently, he had forgotten about it completely.
Zelda pulled on the reins and her horse came to a stop.
“You have a house?” She questioned.
Link nodded. “Just along that path there.” He pointed ahead to a small path branching off from the one they rode in. Zelda turned her horse and started along the small path.
“I bought it from a company that was demolishing it. I'm not sure why, but something about it called to me.” Link continued as they rode along.
Zelda was oddly quiet, her brow slightly furrowed in thought.
He hopped off his horse as they approached the narrow bridge to his home. He helped Zelda down, who still hadn’t said a word.
“Is something wrong, Princess?” He asked as they walked along the bridge.
Zelda glanced at him. “I… I’m not sure how to tell you this, Link.”
Link stopped and turned towards her.
Zelda met his eyes. Hers were full of worry.
“Link, this was your house.”
“What do you mean?”
“You lived here with your family. You grew up in Hateno. I remember once, all those years ago, while we were traveling you brought me here to meet your father and little sister. I… I’m so sorry.”
Link turned back towards the house and stared at it.
“My family?”
Suddenly he remembered.
All the memories came flooding back.
He remembered Hateno. He and his little sister were raised by his father here.
He remembered how they used to play by the pond behind the house.
He remembered how he used to spar with his father, beating him even at a young age.
This had been his home until he had to move to the castle.
When he had visited them with Zelda…
That was the last time I ever saw them.
Link fell to his knees, tears welling up in his eyes.
“How could I forget my own family?” He whispered.
He felt an arm wrap around him.
“They’re gone. That is why they were demolishing the house. My father, my sister… they’re dead…” He broke down in tears.
Zelda pulled him into her arms and he could hear her crying, too.
“I’m so sorry” she whispered.
They cried together for what seemed like an eternity before Link pulled out of her embrace and looked at his house with a heavy heart.
“Everyone we knew… our families… they all are all gone, aren’t they?” He whispered.
Zelda locked eyes with him.
“There were many moments during the 100 years when I was fighting Ganon that I wanted to give up. I felt so alone knowing that my father and my friends were gone.” She took his hand.
“The only thing that got my through it was knowing that you were safe, and that when the time came you would save me.” A small smile formed on her lips.
“And you did. And now we are together again. We are no longer alone.”
Link took a breath. “Ganon is gone and Hyrule is safe. And we still have each other… that’s all that matters.”
