Finished Silent Hill 4 The Room. This one was interesting, I can definitely see the connections made to it when PT came out. I enjoyed it, the haunting mechanic you encounter later in the game made it a little difficult but where it was more difficult in its action it was balanced in the simplicity of its puzzles. The story had me hooked but I feel it’s more because it’s elaborating on side lore from SH2. Definitely wouldn’t recommend this one as a first for anyone new to the series. When it comes to the horror aspect I’d say this one is probably the least scary of the first four games. It did have creepy elements so it’s definitely not to say it’s not a scary game but just not at the same level as 2 or 3 but close to 1. That’s it for the team Silent games, now to move on to the ones developed by western devs. I’ve heard not the best things but am still excited to see what I find. So I’ve been playing through these games. Tbh I actually only played the first two and PT before. I collected the rest over the last 8 years as PT piqued my interest in the series. I just finished playing the third one for the first time after replaying the first two again, getting Good++ ending and the Rebirth ending in one and two, respectively. Side note when I’ve played two before I got the In water ending. I of course got the normal ending with three as I read it’s the default for first beating it. I’d say after playing all three each has its own strengths for me. One has all the nostalgia as it’s the only one I experienced before I was an adult. Two has a deep, poetic story, which is always a huge plus for me. But three is hands down the scariest. I’ve never felt so creeped out when reading a series of files/memos like how Stanley’s did in the hospital. The sound design and creature design is superbly mind bending. I do also like how it makes a more cohesive story from what was started from the first one game. The things mention barely scratch the surface. This one also was the most difficult except the first and last bosses in it. I definitely hope this and the first game are remade as well. They would be great experiences for any horror fan to enjoy. Finished House of Ashes. I swear these Dark Pictures Anthology games just get better with each new entry. This is the current one out with the next one releasing next month. Maybe I’m a little biased with this one because from the beginning it gave me nostalgia for Eternal Darkness: Sanity’s Requiem. Very different game but it’s Lovecraftian horror and ending just hit so perfectly. I also like how Namco has been doing this series. Each game relies on something different for survival via choice made in the game, I really like how this one gave more focus to the idea with the quick time events that inaction is still action. So there’s no formula between the games which helps make them feel fresh. The Devil in Me is the next one and the “season finale” for the anthology as said in its trailer, I hope they do make more. I debated pre ordering the new one as opposed to waiting for it to go on sale but this one has got me leaning a lot towards doing so. So far with these I highly recommend House of Ashes and Little Hope to horror fans or QTE choice based game fans. Finished Little Hope. This is the second game in the Dark Pictures Anthology. This one is vastly better than the first one, Man of Medan. They have a lot of jump scares again but are a lot more effective in this one. The story is very well done, even though I guessed most of it pretty quick but this one has me more eager to play it to get a better ending. Finished Fatal Frame Maiden of the Black Water. This one was interesting, it was more of a slow burn with its scares where it’s more subtle so when it hits its very effective. I feel the storyline and lore is the creepiest thing, can’t really go into it here as it’ll require a huge trigger warning that usually suppresses content. The mechanics are very interesting, I only played Fatal Frame 2 before but wish I played that one more after playing this one. There is a fair share of what feels like padding IMO though as the game, at points follows a formula of having multiple levels be the same in where you go and who you fight except you’re playing a different character and only some story differences. But getting to the last two chapters makes it all worth it. That jump scare with the second surveillance level with Ren when the bride ghost is staring at you, I’d argue that’s one of the best jump scares in video game history. Finally finished The Medium. I’ve been back and forth with this one as the thing that terrified me the most was the sound editing with the voice acting of the main antagonist, who I now know was voiced by Troy Baker, so no wonder it was so effective. I liked this one quite a bit. It is kind of like a blend of Layers of Fear and Silent Hill which makes sense considering who made it. The story is done well but does have some areas that I feel could have been better. I liked the atmospheric sense of dread and the story/gameplay mechanic of existing between the two worlds of life and the afterlife. I’d recommend this one for horror fans especially if you prefer atmospheric horror of Silent Hill over jump scares. If rumors are true about Bloober working on one of the Silent Hill games Konami is making, I’m very excited to see what they do with it after playing this. #therighteousgemstones is one of the best shows I’ve watched this year. Usually I just watch a show during mealtimes but I couldn’t help but just completely binge both seasons of this show in a week in spite of this last weekend being mostly spent at EVO. I highly recommend this comedy, it is definitely Danny McBride’s best show. A very compelling story, great character building with phenomenal performances by all the actors/actresses.
