Today had felt like a good day to run.
Louise often got these urges—to just be something other than human—and rarely refused them.
The deceptively delicate looking hooves of her current form blurred and barely seemed to touch the cracked, dry earth as she cruised easily at just a bit over 45 mph.
The Pronghorn was the second fastest land animal, only out matched by the Cheetah. It might not get any press for only being second 'best,' but being capable of cruising at 40 to 50 mph easily for hours on end made it one of her favorite forms.
They were also near impossible for anything on legs to catch. They weren't called Ghosts of the Desert for nothing, after all.
Which is why, when she spotted the cloud of dust growing in her peripheral vision, she initially assumed it to be a dust devil.
But no. It was closing too fast to be wind-driven, considering the current wind conditions. And the speck drawing closer with every moment didn't behave like an ATV or a motor cycle. In her several moments of confusion, the speck had... closed the distance.
It--he, she realized, huge brown eyes widening in some surprise--had been moving much, much faster than she had anticipated.
She wasn't paying attention. And so she tripped, rolling badly for almost two hundred feet before coming to a halt on her side, stunned and winded and with whole swaths of fur torn from her flanks and back... but amazingly(luckily), not hurt much other than that.
… Still. That's a swell way to start an afternoon.
