A game that controls your mind?
POLYBIUS, is the name of an elusive coin-op arcade game that allegedly appeared in the early eighties in some small arcades in Portland USA. The game had a copyright notice of 1981 and was manufactured by a company called Sinneslöschen, which roughly translates to "sense delete" or "sensory deprivation”. What was bizarre about the game is that reportedly the machine was frequently serviced by mysterious caretakers that took note of players and high scores. Also reports that playing the actual game caused insomnia, night terrors, memory loss and similar reactions to the players, heavily circulated the Internet, in early 2000s. Soon after its release the game disappeared without a trace, leaving speculation that it was an actual government experiment in mass subliminal messaging and mind control… Urban myth or reality we’ll never know, but references to the game survive in pop culture: A Polybius arcade can be seen in a 2006 episode of The Simpsons, titled "Please Homer, Don't Hammer 'Em", also in the background of two episodes of the television show The Goldbergs (2014), in the comic Batman Inc. No. 1 (2012), and as a T-shirt in Vertigo's 2008 House of Mystery series. Haunted Arcade anyone?
