     here’s the thing: luke isn’t dumb. it’s never great when you have to lead with that, but he isn’t. people hear the way he talks or see his well-worn mannerisms or the earnest look on his face and assume he is – well, they assume it less often now, when they recognize him. but they never used to think that maybe he’s earnest on purpose.

     he knows he takes the wrong things seriously. sometimes he does miss it, the secret cue, the sarcastic tone he was meant to pick up on. but when audrey makes an offhand self-deprecating comment, he registers it as a joke. he just doesn’t feel like laughing.

     “i’ve got a lot of feeling for you. you’re kind.”

     until luke became a rebel, he was a spectator. he wanted – his earliest memories, more than anything, are of wanting – to go, to fly, to chase after, to be with the people who made life worth living. but of course there was earth to come back down to. he never ran out of chores to do. with owen and beru counting on him, where would he have found the time to go out with his friends? even if they’d had somewhere to dance?

     he would have to be truly ungrateful to feel left out or left behind now, when he has seen so much.

     audrey catches him standing apart. he’s been content just to watch. his mood is reflective and rather quiet. ( it usually wasn’t, when he was a child. ) as he turns, he’s half-expecting to see someone else in her place. does she feel it too? someone’s bright spirit flickering in the force? or in the earth. or in the two of them.

     luminous beings are we. maybe luminous beings should dance.

     luke smiles. without a word, he takes her offered hand.
