bruce does not leave gotham... often. there have been times where need overtakes comfort, where his dear city must be abandoned: growing threats, commitments to the league, a certain owl who had been reaping vengeance. he has been gone for little over a month-- not a long time, all things considered, though it feels as if it might have been a lifetime. spending time with dick was not often good for him: bludhaven was doing well, though. better now they had worked together to isolate a few key players, to ensure that their sights were focused. the jails were already fuller. 

it is late, the type of night that cares more about being blue than being truthful. they’re in his library. he holds up a bottle of whiskey, a silent question, wondering if @hauntrcss wanted a drink. his brow is raised along with it. unmasked, he always feels naked around those who know his other life. but she is in his home. dressing up would be a bit much, isn’t it?   “i was wondering how gotham has behaved,”    he says, cautiously. he does not like when others know how much he loves this city: it has never been a requited love.

    “you’re on the naughty list.” it was blurted out before she could stop herself, mostly because she wasn’t used to this life away from home. she wasn’t used to people to whom that would mean nothing...or make her sound crazy. “you’re helena, right?”

TOMMY SIGHS HEAVILY,    FIFTH GLASS OF WHISKY hanging limply from his hand.    He’s sitting at his desk,    staring up at the high ceilings,    smoking and drinking like an eighth grader who’s just figured out that booze and cigarettes exist.    His shirt is rolled up to his elbows and his shoes are somewhere in the near vicinity.    He knows he should be more open with her.    He knows that hiding the truth will do nothing but create more problems.

But what can he possibly tell her ?    That today he’d been sitting by the water,    heard a hunter kill a buck,    and had dived down onto his belly and covered his head like a coward ?    That the war goes on and on in his head no matter what he does ?    That he’s human ?

He lifts his head to look at her,    the room threatening to spin around him and send him sprawling to his ass if he dares to stand up.   

“ Because I don’t know what I want,    Helena.    Why don’t you leave me the fuck alone ? ”
