my best attempt at making a staple eee dish. sauce with seafood and dried fruit (pineapple and sultanas), with a ball of “tapay” (boiled dough) in the middle.

this dish varies throughout the island but always contains the “tapay”, some sauce (usually coloured yellow), seafood, dried fruit and nuts. this was also served with dandelion tea

the dandelions on top and in the tea are dried marigolds and the grossest thing i have ever eaten. derv ate the majority of the leftovers because the smell made me feel ill. tasted alright at the time though

dandelions? weird yellow visor? what gives?!?!?!

yellow is a very common and meaningful colour on eee. all roys and mlâts have to wear a yellow visor/glasses so they only see things in a yellow tint.

the prevalence of yellow has its roots in the plateauing of Haute (referring to the mountains that used to be there) which finished in 748 TT. the process took 617 years to complete so it was a pretty big deal when the last piece of rock was smashed up. according to legend (and witness accounts), the team working on the last chunk had been up all night working and when the bit was done, the foreman (who became Roy Thripâhathutagadânathandât) looked up and saw the yellowest sunrise she had ever seen. ever since, the roy or mlât wear yellow shades over their eyes in reference to this moment.

dandelions are important to eee, because of both the colour and their availability. most of Haute (the plateaued area) has a very gravelly topsoil where dandelions thrive. they are farmed commercially but are easily foraged. dandelions are cooked, turned into tea or dried and used as an edible dye.

people often say that dandelions are important because the people excavating Haute had to survive on them because of the lack of food, however dandelions have very little nutrition and didnt become common until after the plateauing
