Cuba, an amazing country for music lovers #CubaInsider

Everybody knows Cuba for salsa and Buena Vista Social Club but actually Cuban music is more diverse than that.

While hundreds of tourists stand in line to enter to a “typical” salsa Club, Cubans like going elsewhere, in places that are not associated to a specific style of music. Cubans like dancing, listening to music but all kinds of music, from salsa (of course!) to reggaeton, international, pop, electro… and much more!

Cuba is one of the Motherland of Latin music that had a strong influence in the world of music at various points in the history. Without big names like Dizzy Gillespie, Machito or Chano Pozo the Latin Jazz would not be what it is today. Cuba as well have been very influential in popular music, including Mambo and Chachacha.

Cuban music is a real story of passion, it refers to moments of joy and happiness. As someone explained me “the music is in our blood, we was born with it. We first learned to dance, then to walk!’.

It’s not a cliché: in Cuba music is really everywhere, even lost in the countryside, there is always a guy who plays music on his old phone or with anything! Cuban music reflects its population: it is a real mix, which takes its historical origins: Africa, Spain and Caribbean.

Nowadays, Cuban musicians inspired by many contemporary trends have perfectly integrated their heritage and are developing their own identity which I suggest you to discover!

What about electronic music in Cuba?

To answer to this question, I had the chance to meet Kike Wolf, a great music producer and famous DJ in Cuba who was one of the 10 artists from all over the world selected by Gilles Peterson to create a track in the Havana Cultura Mix Album: The soundclash.

Kike explained me that here in Cuba, where internet access is restricted or non-existent in some provinces, it is the beginning of the electro music. Little by little, Cuban DJ started to play these sounds, to produce their own sounds and now the public is more and more asking for this kind of music!

Do you remember the ‘supplying system’ that enables Cubans not to be missing of anything? This system is really important for the Cuban music world.

“To produce music in Cuba, told me Kike, especially electro music, you must combine with other artists. One gives you an idea, other a USB stick, other an electric cable or anything you miss. That how you bring together existing tools and techniques in Cuba!”.

When I asked him what he wanted for the future he answered, laughing “Gigabytes of music!”. Here, Gigabytes of music pass from hand to hand and actually, everybody could easily be aware of current music.

Well I think the best way to know more about Cuban music is to hear Cuban music!
