The Bhangarh Fort is a stone-built fortress located in Rajasthan, India. Surrounded by large walls and 4 gates (5, if you include its main gate) the fort is in ruins and, aside from the structures, it is completely empty. Abandoned temples, palaces, and havelis (traditional townhouses) litter the fort city.
Built in the 17th-century, it’s relatively young compared to the other structures on this blog, but still very interesting, especially for our theme month! Said to be haunted, the Archaeological Survey of India forbids anyone from remaining within the fort’s precincts at night. Two prominent legends tell a torrid history of the city.
The first claims that a hermit-monk named Babu Balau Nath lived close by to the fort. He warned that if any house built within the fort’s precincts ever be taller than his own house, or that the shadow of any such house fell on his, the fort town would be utterly destroyed.
In another version, a sorcerer and master of black magic fell in love with the princess of Bhangarh. The princess had many suitors, but one day, when she was 18, the sorcerer saw her in the market buying some perfume. He switched the perfume with a love potion in an attempt to make her fall in love with him. But the princess saw through the sorcerer’s trick, and when she was offered the potion, she threw it onto a boulder. The boulder came loose and rolled over the sorcerer, crushing him. With his dying breath he cursed Bhangarh Fort, and prophesized that soon no one would be able to live there. A few days later the fork was invaded by the Mughals and sacked. All 10,000 inhabitants of the city, including the princess, were killed, and the ghosts that are said to haunt the fort are those of the sorcerer and all Bhangarh’s murdered citizenry.

The regions like Fatehpur, Shekhawati, and Mandawa are famous for havelis. Some are abandoned while some stand tall reliving their fascinating past. The havelis adorn traditional/cultural paintings and vibrant frescoes on its wall, which provide it with a rich artistic value. Such heritage-rich havelis can be acquired and converted into a resort or a hotel. Due to the high influx of tourists from different parts of the country and abroad havelis stay command more value compared to the routine hotels. What more can be exciting for the travellers to get an opportunity to re-live the golden era with that same olden-beguile.
