This is just some info on the main places in Haven. It's some, not all. Will add to this as needed.
The water tower is the last thing you come across if you leave Haven by heading West. It's old. Older than anything else in town. Even the Macade Farm went up after the tower, and they were the founding family.
A new coat of blue paint goes on it every Spring. By winter, the rust has already taken over.
Local legend says that it's haunted. Some nights, you can hear a woman crying. Other times, the sound of a person rapping against the old metal fills the air. Always, the sounds come from inside the water tower. Rumor has it, someone lives there. Trapped for eternity.
The sad reality is that those rumors aren't very far off. Haven was founded by a witch named James Macade. As was common practice in those days, he sealed a water spirit inside of the tower. It granted the town prosperity and kept them afloat during many long Summers.
But as is often the case, it grew angry. Year by year, the rage festered - for old James Macade never followed through on his deal to release her in ten years time. At first, it was because the town was doing well and he feared what would happen to it without the spirits aid. And then, as the years passed, his fear became focused on what would happen to himself, should he release her so late? What would happen to his family?
It was a risk that he decided couldn't be taken.
That year, near seventy five years ago, James Macade lied to the Regional Witch Guild. He claimed the spirit was corrupted and he marked the water tower with a sigil designed to keep the spirit forever trapped. Though she was still Pure, her name was written in the Black Book of Ohio. Every year, the sigil is redrawn.
When James finally passed away, he took his lie with him, hoping it would never become reality.
The local hardware store is called Handy Andy's. It's owned by the Wilson family; Andrew the third, Maggie, and their son, Terry. When you come into Haven from the East, it's the first building you come across. It sits directly across the road from the old Macade farm.
It's obviously an old building but the Wilson's do a good job keeping it looking nice. They have a fake rag doll sitting on the roof, as sort of a namesake. Most of the Wilson boys have been named Andrew or a variation of that, but Maggie refused to do the same to her son.
They sell things typical of a hardware store and are open 24/7. Andy claims it's tradition. Terry swears it's just because his dad likes to make him miserable.
This is one of two stores in town.
Save And Spend is one of two stores in town. It was originally a gas station but the owner, Mrs Frigga, couldn't afford to keep the pumps full. It now serves as the market, of sorts. Really, it's just like the inside of any small gas station convenience store. The only fresh food that it sells are milk, eggs, apples, and potatoes.
The building always smells faintly of fish, due to the fact that Frigga keeps sitting out fish for stray cats. There's always at least twelve cats in the parking lot and three or four more inside the building.
Haven General Hospital is located at the center of town. It's the only hospital nearby and serves as the go-to location for anyone from the other nearby towns. It's mostly staffed by people from out of town, too. The most notable exception is Nyota's mother, who serves as the head surgeon.
Haven Public Library is an itty bitty thing. There's not much to say about it; the librarian is an old woman that lives out of town and can't hear very well. She keeps a bowl of butterscotch candies on the front desk.
The library also doubles as the post office. There's a mailbox just out front and a spot to drop large packages off inside.
Haven doesn't have a police station or a fire department. They rely on a neighboring town: Blackwater.
Oddly enough, Haven does have a skate park. Sort of. It's really just the local park; a few benches, a couple of trees, a swing set, and a ramp that a couple of teenagers built a while back. This is a go-to hang out spot.
The last building of note is Coastal Eatery. This is a diner run by Nyota's father. It specializes in traditional Swahilian and Tanzanian foods. Because it's the only restaurant in town, it's very popular.
