âBaby,â Keigo chuckles, shaking his head in disbelief, âitâs gotta come off, Iâm sorry.â
Heâs not exactly surprised this is your reaction, heâs had his beard since the day youâve met. Every cuddle youâve shared, every word heâs spoke to you, every time youâve looked at him, his facial hair has been there.
And now he has to shave it off.
You pout softly, âbut itâs going to be so weird without itâŚâ
He quirks a brow, âyouâre not with me just for the facial hair, right?â
âNo, but it does help!â you assure.
He snickers and shakes his head, âand now your loyalty is being put to the test. Itâs going.â
âFine,â you grumble. Then, you purse your lips out for a kiss, âone more kiss? Before you ruin my fun?â
âDramatic,â he snickers, leaning down to indeed press a kiss to your lips. You toss your arms around his neck to keep him close, and he smirks as he grips your cheeks to hold you.
He entertains you for a bit, before finally pulling back with a sigh, âsay goodbye, baby.â
You pout, âgoodbye, the Keigo I know and love.â
âYouâll love me beardless too, I promise.â At his words, you pull a face, and he chuckles with a pinch of your cheek, ignoring the bats of your hands.
With that, Keigo traverses down the hallway.
He canât remember the last time he was clean shaven, it was far before he met you for sure, but the idea is slightly daunting in of itself. But itâs been so long, heâs gotta start fresh, and with a roll of his shoulders for confidence, he picks up the razor and gets to work.
The process doesnât take long, a couple of nicks on his lip from the lack of experience, and within a few minutes, the deed is done.
Youâre going to be pissed.
âBabe?â He calls, swiftly exiting the bathroom.
âNo.â
He chuckles, âIâm coming out. Be ready.â
âStay in there.â
He exits the bathroom swiftly, and when you see him in your peripheral, your hands immediately fly to your eyes to cover them.
âYou want to see it?â He asks, and with your hands childishly covering your eyes, you shake your head. He snickers and shrugs, âwell, youâre going to see it at some point.â
âNo I wonât,â you argue. âIâll cover my eyes forever.â
âWhat about the kisses that you beg and plead for? Wonât those pretty hands get in the way?â
You whimper in your throat before sighing and taking your hands off of your eyes, your eyes immediately darting in search for his beard and your face scrunches.
âOhhh, itâs a baby!â You pout, reaching up to cup his face in your hands. He laughs as you whine, âgod Iâm dating a baby!â
âDonât say that, it sounds bad.â
âKeigooooo,â you whine. âIf you clench hard, will it grow back faster?â
He tips his head back in mock thought, âno. I donât think so, angel.â
âWill you try?â You plead.
He sighs dramatically before looking down at you in amusement. âYou know what? For you?â He leans down to kiss you again.

[Compares hand sizes w/ you and thinks itâs peak romance] & [Delivers small items to you w/ feathers or on your desk (this one's mine :D)]
You both had similar quirks and you both work with Endeavor (most of time). He sees you around all the time as you do him, heâs just really awkward đŹ
â° âââÂĄ! ⢠!ÂĄâââ âŻ
[First one]
"Y/n, let's compare hand sizes."
The way you looked over at him confused had him even more fired up for some reason.
"Why?"
"Why not? We both have similar quirks and I just want to see something."
You shrug and hold out your hand for him to mess with while your free hand scrolls through your phone. You thought it was going to be a quick thing until he pulled up a seat next to you. You couldn't believe it but you weren't really doing anything at the moment either.
"Your hand is so... small."
His other hand traces shapes on the back of your hand and sometimes outlines the shape of your hands pressed together.
You were up by the vending machine buying yourself some snacks. Little did you know, someone noticed that you always bought the same snack every single time. You hum to yourself and when you turn to go back to your desk, you see the same snack that you picked up from the vending machine.
"What the-"
Then you spot the tuft of a red feather, you couldn't help but smile. You eat both snacks happily and continue your work. Not even 10 minutes later, two red feathers balancing a flower, a F/f to be exact, fly over to you and place it gently on your desk before zipping away quickly around the corner.
"Thanks Hawks."
You couldn't help but chuckle to yourself when you heard a small happy chirp from around the corner.

You sat next to Izuku in class and always assisted him with his research and work. But, he was starting to catch feelings for you. He couldn't help but peek at you during the test handed out by Mr. Aizawa.
"Do you wanna get boba after class Izuku? My treat after helping me study."
"Sure Y/n. I'd love that."
Before you and Izuku could walk out of the classroom together, Aizawa's voice called out from the desk.
"Izuku, see me real quick."
"I'll wait by the fountain, I have to change clothes."
"See you then Y/n."
Izuku walks back into the classroom and approaches Aizawa. With no hesitation, Aizawa flips Izuku's test to show him and raises an eyebrow at him. He put your name where his name should've gone.
"Uhm...that was a mistake! I can fix it now!"
Izuku quickly erases your name with a bright blush on his face and replaces it with his own name.
"Sorry about that Mr. Aizawa!"
Aizawa dismisses Izuku and he immediately runs out of the room. Izuku was so embarrassed and just continued his trek to his room to prepare for your boba date.

You were the one who helped take down Overhaul with the group. You managed to keep up with him and help him when needed. You even stayed by his side in the hospital, falling asleep by his bedside.
â° âââÂĄ! ⢠!ÂĄâââ âŻ
You both would help Aizawa babysit Eri and even spar with each other. It was the day of the festival and you had taken Eri to get something to eat from one of the many food stands at UA. Mirio spoke to Tamaki and Nejire.
Nejire was poking fun at Tamaki and telling him not to be so nervous, then Mirio let out a laugh. They both stopped and stared at him, confused and in shock.
"Why are you guys looking at me like that?"
"Your laugh..."
"What about it?"
"It's...different."
Mirio stayed silent and thought about it for a second. He kinda did switch his laugh, it almost sounded like yours, almost identical to it. He decided to deny their claims with a smile.
"This is how I always laugh."
"No, it's not. You kinda sound like-"
Nejire gasps at the realization and then smirks at Mirio.
"Aww, you're laughing like-"
"I gotta go get something to eat so I can meet up with Eri and Y/n. Talk to you later."
He speaks quickly and disappears as quick as he speaks. His friends look on in shock but leave him be. Nejire was snickering while Tamaki was giving her a small smile.

While he's yelling at them both, Kaminari waves at you with a smile.
"Hey Y/n. As you can see, we're currently being yelled at."
The yelling would slowly come to a halt when you look him in the eyes.
"What did they do to make you so mad Katsuki?"
He looks away from you and starts grumbling out an answer. You couldn't even understand what he was saying but you just nodded along anyway.
"Y/n."
All Might enters the room in a hurry, you look and notice Midoriya is absent from his seat.
"Young Midoriya needs some additional assistance in the infirmary."
"Man, he's always doing something crazy. I'll be right there in a sec All Might."
Hearing Midoriya's name slip from your mouth made something snap inside him. But at least you and him were on a first name basis. You slide your hand on Bakugo's shoulder and lean in to whisper in his ear.
"Go easy on them, killer. We'll talk later."
He makes a small grumble sound in response and your hand slips off his shoulder as you quickly walk out of the classroom to help Midoriya. As soon as you leave, Mina and Sero join the group, choosing to sit behind Bakugo.

(A/n: this use to be my manz before Mirio got mentioned!!!)
â° âââÂĄ! ⢠!ÂĄâââ âŻ
[First One]
You walk into the classroom? He's looking at you. Even in the hallway, if he hears your laugh or your voice, he's looking for you. It makes his friends giggle considering they've never seen Todoroki act like this towards anyone before.
Hell, he ran into a stop sign when he saw you outside of school.
"You stare at Y/n a lot, Todoroki..."
His eyes widen and his cheeks become a bit hot before trying to change his features back to his neutral state. He hadn't realized. Did he stare too much?
"Do you like her Todoroki?"
Now that question makes his cheeks burn and he quickly turns to the side.
When Todoroki was learning some new moves with his friends during his free time in the training room, you had come in to train as well. Everyone turned to look at you when you came in and you smiled at them.
"Thank God that someone's here. I need to borrow your quirks to practice some quick movements."
"How?"
"Just throw as many quick moves as you can and I'll try to avoid them with quick simple movements."
Everyone agreed and got into position to help you out while practicing their own new moves on you. When Todoroki hit you with one of his biggest moves, you propelled yourself upward with the help of your quirk.
You jump over the wall of spikes and land smoothly behind him with a smirk.
"That was kinda hard but good practice. Good job Shoto!"
You pick up your things off the ground and go to exit the training room with sweat pellets all over your skin. As soon as the door closes behind you, his left side ignites in flames so big that it could cause a fire.
When Todoroki notices Midoriya scribbling in his notebook on his specific page, he settles his left side.
"That's kind of cute how you got worked up over a compliment from Y/n."

"Y/NNNNNN"
You waved goodbye to kids and told them to run along. They do and they quickly start causing chaos for the other students of UA and Shiketsu High.
"YOU LOOK SO BEAUTIFUL!!"
You simply smile at him and then walk out of the arena to watch from the stands. Let me tell you, he had found out where you were sitting and every two seconds, he'd scream out a compliment to you. It did cause his teacher to yell at him to focus on the task at hand.
You noticed him every time and acknowledged his compliment. It was hilarious and you had to admit, he was a bit of a cutie pie himself.

â° âââÂĄ! ⢠!ÂĄâââ âŻ
You had noticed him multiple times in the hallway and at lunch, but especially in the hallways. His tall frame would pass by you at least 15 times a day. Hell, he'd even break his hero costume just to get you to fix it.
"L/n, can you fix this for me, it ripped."
He hands you his hero costume which looks like the mask area of it was cut up with some wacky ahh scissors.
"Mezo, you sure you didn't cut these up?"
You look at the fabric intently, using your loupe glasses to zoom in one the cuts.
"I fought a villain today and he happened to have a strange quirk. He cut up my mask."
You decided to go along with it and hummed in response. You pulled over a rolling chair and patted the seat.
"It won't take long, just have a seat here."
He complies and watches you work intently. He notices you smell good too and can't help but enjoy being around you. You hand him his hero costume after 5-6 minutes of sewing.
"Good as new! Well, see you."
With that you get back to work on 2A's gadgets that they asked for. He passes by your table at lunch all the time, just looking and mumbles a hello under his breath. You respond happily every time. Including when he walks really close to you in the hallway.
He helps you carry your gadgets all the time and even stops when you stop to do something. It's really cute but kinda stalker-like lol. Even though he doesn't mean to be like a stalker lol.

â° âââÂĄ! ⢠!ÂĄâââ âŻ
You're currently out in the common area chatting it up with Midoriya and Todoroki. Bakugo and his friends are out there too. You smell something delicious and turn around noticing Sato approaching you with a tray of baked goods.
"Here you go Y/n."
"Thanks Sato."
You take a bite out of the dessert and hum in a happy way. It was so good.
"It's really good. Thank you so much."
You notice Bakugo looking over at Sato with a distasteful grimace.
"Oi! What about the rest of us, you teasing us with food now!"
Sato doesn't even respond the angry blonde, you knew he wasn't going to waste his time on him. He starts to walk back to his dorm room, tray still in hand as the delicious smell fades.
"HEY, I'M TALKING TO YOU DUMBASS! GET BACK HERE!"
And oh boy, when class starts tomorrow, Bakugo approaches Sato demanding him to explain himself.
"Why did only Y/n get a dessert?! Picking favorites are we?!"
You look back at Bakugo with an oatmeal cookie hanging from your mouth.
"Y/n's honest. She'll tell me if it's good or not. You're just angry."
When he said that, that pissed Bakugo off more than it should.
"WHAT?!?!?!?"

He thinks he eats every time but he really ain't eating at all. It's sometimes the poems are good and most of the time they are bad lol.
â° âââÂĄ! ⢠!ÂĄâââ âŻ
When Shinso first dropped his notebook, you returned it back to him the next day only for him to drop it in front of you again in the halls. When you picked it up and flipped through it, you could feel his eyes watching you.
When you lifted your head up, he disappeared quickly behind a corner. Some weren't even poems... little doodles, lists, hero costume sketches were all featured in Shinso's notes. You have at least 15 or more of his notebooks in your dorm by now.
When he was walking with Eri, he dropped his notebook in front of you. Poor Eri looked so confused.
"Shinso, you dropped your notebook."
Eri goes to pick it up but he quickly makes eye contact with you and then snatches Eri up in his arms, running behind a wall. You could hear him talking to her but flip through it anyway. This time the poems were eating at your heart.
They were all about you! Your eyes, personality and even your facial expressions were included in the poems and tiny drawings of your face. It was so cute, you peered up at the wall and he quickly drew back behind it.
Shinso was too cute!!!

He be selling sometimes, I cannot lie. Like sometimes it'll be at a weird time when he says something super poetic. Sometimes it hits, sometimes it's just... odd.
â° âââÂĄ! ⢠!ÂĄâââ âŻ
You walked into the commons room with your computer and a cup of noodles in hand as well as a blanket wrapped around your shoulders. You hated the silence of your dorm room and really wanted to watch a show and be able to get extremely comfortable.
You set up your space on the couch in dark commons area and start watching your show. In the middle of eating and watching your little Netflix show, you feel the couch cushion behind you move. Using your quirk, you lift a finger into the air and a shimmer enlightens from your fingertip.
"Oh my gosh! Tokoyami, you scared the absolute crap out of me." You whisper-yell before dimming the light from your finger.
"Sorry, I heard something and came to investigate."
You notice the novel in his hands and smile at him.
"You wanna chill here with me? You don't have to watch the show if you don't want to, you can do your own thing."
He hums in response before saying something weirdly poetic.
"Being next to someone in the dark is like a warm blanket shrouded in darkness."
You can't help but laugh a little bit before responding.
"I suppose it is Tokoyami, I suppose it is."
Dark Shadow pops up next to you underneath your blanket with a giggle.
"What he's trying to say is-"
Tokoyami pulls his phone from his pocket and shines the flashlight on Dark Shadow. The shadow howls in agony before shuffling more underneath the blanket.
"Alright, alright. I'll behave, I'm trying to watch this show."
Tokoyami grunts and gives Dark Shadow a dirty look before returning to reading his novel. You can't help but send a smirk over your shoulder to Tokoyami, he has a red hue on his face.

EIJIRO KIRISHIMA -
â âââ ⢠âââ âŽ
[Randomly flexes when you're near and acts all surprised when he 'notices' you]
Bro, even Bakugo is wondering what the hell that idiot is doing. The whole friend group just wonders if he'll ever say anything to you. Probably not lol.
â° âââÂĄ! ⢠!ÂĄâââ âŻ
Bruh, Kirishima needs to find a new hobby for his friends' sakes. The way this man looks around to see if you're there or around is absolutely insane. The whole gang talked to him about it too.
"Why don't you just talk to her, you'll never know if you don't try."
Kirishima rubs the back of his neck, looking off to the side with a pink hue on his cheeks.
"I'm sort of nervous to even say anything to her, maybe she'll talk to me if I show her how manly I am."
He said that with some much confidence that he couldn't even hear the group groan and ask him to change his mind about that.
But whenever, and I mean whenever, you would walk into any room and he spots you or smells your fragrance before you come into the room, he flexes. You, of course, look over like what the helly is happening and then he acts surprised.
"Oh hey Y/n, I didn't see you there."
One thing you learned when that happened is that Mina cannot hold in her laughter for the life of her. You couldn't help but laugh with her, it was a cute moment and he decided from then on that he liked your laugh.
Don't get me started on when y'all swim or train in the same room...
If you train in the same room, he'll pick a bench near you, peel his shirt off and get to work. You notice and just smile to yourself, continuing your work out. After the workout is done, you both sit next to each other on the bench.
He'll hand you a water and you'll thank him before taking a sip. Then you'd notice his eyes on you, flex your muscles and smile when he does the same. Cute moment, 10/10.
But with swimming, girlypop, you ain't gonna be able to do nothing without him looking at you. He's in the pool messing around and then flexes his back when you're behind him, talking to Mina on the poolside with your feet in the water.
You sometimes push his back with your foot and he'll shiver from the cool water or from you, just you doing that will get him all blushy and shit. It's mad cute, not when Bakugo is yelling at him to focus on beating him in the pool. But still cute <3

ao3 link
the first instance was quick and forgettable. you were both eating takeout at your place, talking about random things that fluttered through your minds.
it started innocently at first, with you completely lacking suspicion. he asked if your bed was warm. well, maybe not purely suspicion-less. that was still a weird comment to make, in all honesty. but you just nodded your head.
"yeah, of course," you had replied. you didn't even have to think: your bed, the bed he referred to, had a weighted, heated blanket as its majestic centerpiece. it was really amazing. it also should've tipped you off on how weird he was acting, considering he knew that and still asked.
his wings drooped at that, and at the time you just dismissed it as keigo acting like keigo. really, that explanation still held up nowâ but again, you really should've seen it coming.
the second instance was just as small, but also should've been just as⌠alarming. not alarming, but your hindsight was 20/20. it wasn't alarming, but it wasn't normal. even for keigo, which said a lot.
you were both lounging in his apartment, laying around on the couch as some documentary played in the background. you drifted in and out of a mindless state, and keigo was sprawled over you. one wing dropped off the couch, the other curled around you in a matching pattern to an arm of his.
he had asked another seemingly innocent question.
"how many blankets do you have?" he had stated. it was out of the blue. it was literally just how keigo acts.
you paused, had pursed your lips. "pardon?" your brow furrowed and you blinked, slowly staring at him before deducing thatâ with most odd questions of hisâ he was completely serious. you swallowed. "do you mean just on my bed or, like, altogether?"
"whichever number you know." also a weird reply. he was a little bird-ish, coming from his wings, though he wasn't completely weird. this was also standoffish of him, which, you thought for the billionth time, probably should've tipped you off as to what was going on.
you hummed. "probably around four on my bed, if you count sheets. 'cause there's sheets, comforter, throw blanket, and the weighted one. maybe five, 'cause i'll use a fifth when it gets colder out, y'know?"
he nodded, again, however just like the first time his wings drooped. his expression seemed to fall, he seemed to slouch lower than he already did when around you, and his wings lost some of their confidence. the wings were always confident.
"you feeling alright?" you had asked, because even if you weren't suspicious of him, you weren't entirely blind.
keigo just nuzzled up to you again. "yeah."
the third instanceâ and the one that set you on the track of figuring out what was going onâ happened just a week ago. again, you were at his apartment, both laying around.
after moments of silence, another oddity for him, he had spoken in a quiet voice. "do you want to move in with me?"
you knew he had talked about things like that often, though usually in a joking tone. 'if we move in together, you'll never worry about villains again!', or, with a characteristic amount of confidence and a wink, 'i'd have a reason to slow down right there next to me <3'.
you took a moment to reply, though, because this time seemed⌠more genuine. like he was actually asking. and when you looked at him, at his face and tussled hair and eyes boring into your own, you wanted to say yes.
instead, you had said no.
a pang of hurt flashed across his face, but he played it off by dramatically throwing his wings up and his head back, groaning loud enough to wake the neighbors. "how could you!" he cried, voice taking on the tone he used with reporters.
you didn't reply, again making him wait in silence. this was the moment you put everything together. why he had been acting the way he had the past few days. but, in the moment, you just laughed along with him, as though you didn't just figuratively spit in his face.
all three of those instances led to right now, where you stood in front of his bedroom door at an hour just late enough for him to be off work and just early enough for him to be awake. you hesitated before knocking.
since the instance last week, the two of you hadn't spoken. you texted, sure, maybe sent a few jokes and sappy remarks, but no real talks. no phone calls, none of keigo's impromptu visits, none of it.
it all stemmed from you denying his request that last time. so, you were here to apologize. genuinely. pour your heart out if need be.
keigo, for all he acted an overconfident hero, was a man who was nearly half bird. he preened, something you noticed after a good few days of him last spring where he fussed over his wings every few minutes; he peacock-ed around, especially if the two of you were out in public, though he would do so in private so long as you were around.
you spent a good minute before knocking. when you did, it was still pretty quiet. he heard anyway, and called out a familiar acceptance that you were coming in.
his bedroom was big, obviously bigger than yours, and keigo laid on his stomach at the very center of the bed. his wings were stretched to each end, but upon seeing you enter he allowed one to curl back to his side. he pat the now empty space next to him and smiled at you.
"what's bringing you to these parts?" he said, voice muffled slightly by the fact his face was stuffed into a pillow. he laughed.
you settled beside him with ease, a familiar dance for the two of you, laying on your back as you stared at the ceiling. he seemed to tell, like he always did, that you were thinking. not a joking mood.
he couldn't help it, though. his nature, or at least part of it. "lost in your thoughts? i'll pay with a feather." to emphasize his point, he allowed a smaller feather to float into your face until you at least cracked a smile. it drifted back to his wings.
you hummed and turned to your side, facing him. really, you felt bad. how could you not? for the past two weeks, your lovely boyfriend has made it very apparent that he wants to act as a personal heater for you.
probably not very apparent, but apparent enough for you to have googled it a day or so ago and find out that birds have a nesting habit. specifically with their mates, something keigo has most definitely called you before. also, the article specifically called it instinctual and necessary.
so you did feel bad about having replied so dismissively. not dismissively but, like, not friendly. whatever. your thoughts were already wandering away from what you had planned to do.
keigo had fallen silent. he watched you, quite similarly to how you were watching him. but he was quiet. you guessed it was because you weren't really responding to any of his jokes or attempts at a conversation.
"i'm sorry," you eventually mumbled. you turned your own head into the pillows, suddenly feeling nervous about the whole thing. keigo was weird. he was just a weirdo. the chance that this wasn't an insecure bird thing but instead just him being weird was real.
you felt a hand on your back, and you didn't have to turn to know that it was your boyfriend trying to comfort you. "about what?" he mumbled back, matching your gentle tone.
your blinked slowly into the pillowcase, feeling your lashes each time. you eventually lifted your head enough to meet his eyes. "it's a bird thing, isn't it?"
"what is?" his eyes were bright, like always, but his forehead was wrinkled with how he confusedly looked at you.
"asking about blankets and stuff." you felt smaller. again, the back of your mind reminded you, there was a chance those were one-off moments of keigo being weird. "and the moving in thing."
when you felt him stiffen, body tightening, you knew you had it right. for some reason, the tenseness in his muscles alleviated all strain from your own. you felt him shrug, getting caught in the sheets. in the smallest voice you'd heard from him, he answered, "yeah."
"sorry, then," you continued. his hand started drawing mindless circles on your back.
his voice regained just a small bit of the previously lost strength. he was best at comforting others, ever the hero. "you didn't know."
you kept staring at him. "why'd you not tell me?"
"it was just a bird thing." he shrugged again, and his hand stopped the soft movements. he buried his face back into the pillow with the slump of his shoulders, the weakening of the stress holding the joints together.
"was?"
his voice muffled as always, keigo hesitated before replying, "is."
"i've also preened your wings. and washed mud out of your eyes. and you called me your mate, like, a month ago," you laughed, smiling a bit at the mere memory. "i think it being a bird thing is a sucky excuse."
the pillow under your boyfriend shifted, and the chance of him holding back a smile was low. it was like the chance of this not being a bird thing. it was also a chance you did hope was actually real.
you nudged him with your shoulder. "you should've told me."
"i didn't want to pressure you," he confessed. his voice was quiet again, weak. hesitant, unlike everything the vibrant feathers conveyed of his character. the wings themselves were still for once.
"pressure me with what? i read some articles onlineâ" he cut you off with a soft laugh. you scoffed, before continuing. "âi read in some articles about stubborn bird men online that it was something like nesting."
he groaned into the pillow. it felt like a screaming exhale over a regular annoyed sigh, but you knew him well enough to tell that they were similar enough to be treated the same. "that sounds so⌠loser-y. dorky. what kind of hero builds a nest."
"tsukuyomi might, in the future."
that made him let out a real laugh. you followed it with your own, and eventually keigo turned back to meet your eyes again. "yeah," he said as the giggling died out. "yeah. he might."
he smiled at you in the quiet, before you realized he was still avoiding the question. or, the unsaid one you left hanging in the air after you mentioned going reading online. "so?"
"so what?" keigo asked. "so is little tokoyami gonna build a nest? i don't know, heâ"
"kei."
he stopped.
you pursed your lips before going on. "so is it nesting?"
he paused the same way you did. two halves of a whole. he nodded with the same enthusiasm he had when originally admitting he didn't just look like a bird, but that he acted like one.
you kept studying him, committing everything to memory. he did the same thing to you so often.
"it's nesting," he finally replied, after minutes of waiting in silence. "just⌠just like an urge."
"preening urge?"
"yeah." he nodded again, eyes pinning you to the bed. he seemed to be remembering you the same way you tried so hard to remember him. "like⌠like instead of wanting to clean myself or you off, it's like⌠i want the two of us to just be safe. safer, considering you're not in danger."
"neither are you."
he rolled his eyes and you scowled at the audacity. "i'm a hero, literally always in danger," he settled on, in a mildly condescending tone. he smiled when you playfully glared at him.
"fine." you shifted a little closer, feeling the edge of the curled up wing brush your side. you both kept watching each other.
he kept that smile on his face for a little longer before continuing on the nesting track. "yeah. just an urge to keep us safe." he sighed, cheeks beginning to burn a bright red. "sorry about the move in question. it was a little out of nowhere."
"i'd love to."
his eyes widened within half a second, body tensing again. "love to what?"
you shrugged, narrowing your eyes. in a deadpan tone, you replied, "i have no idea, kei, maybe i meant i'd love to move in with you."
he was a wax statue, eyes unblinking and zeroed in on yours. "you said no the other day," he answered in a choked voice. "i assume the reason you're saying yes now is so you don't feel bad about the past few days?"
"i'm saying yes because i'd love to move in with you."
"quit saying that," keigo hissed. his wings had begun trembling, giving away his nervousness. as though it was possible to give himself awayâ his voice was enough to do that on a regular day.
"i'd love to move in with you."
"shut up."
"that's hurtful," you said, pouting. "i'm saying i love you and that i'd love to move in with you and you're telling me to shut up. that's really mean of you."
panic, something that might've concerned you if you weren't already concerned with teasing him, flooding keigo's gaze. he shot up, elbow propping himself just high enough to look down at you. "no, no, i'm sorry."
you sighed, still pretending to be genuinely hurt. "thank you."
he narrowed his eyes, and although you were sure he knew that you were lying, he was nice enough not to mention it. he kept staring down at you, and silence refilled the room.
your eyes never left each other. his breath fanned across your face, and you're sure yours did the same. one of his wings caged your side, flattened across the bed.
after a couple more minutes of silenceâ probably the quietest day you've ever had in person with keigoâ he swallowed and said, "you mean it?"
you nodded.
"why'd you say no the other day?"
"as you said, it was really an in the moment situation," you muttered with a shrug. "i just needed a little more time to think on it. especially 'cause it was the first time you've offered it seriously."
within seconds, the wind was knocked out of your lungs with how fast keigo dropped onto you. he pressed his cheek against yours, head resting face first on the pillow your hair fanned out on. his own hair tickled your nose.
"kei!" you whined, halfheartedly pushing against him. he wrapped his arms around you, tighter, and sighed contentedly into your face.
he pressed a wet, loud kiss to your cheek that made you start whining again. your breathing was slowing with his, comforting. "this is better than a blanket. and you'll have this every night, not just when you plug it in."
"shut up!" you said, trying to shove him off you again, though your pushes got exponentially weaker by the second. "you are not jealous of a weighted blanket!"
he didn't reply, and you couldn't find it in you to continue pressing him about it.
It's strange for Keigo to comprehend how different his life is now. How good.
He's lost his wings. But he's gained an actual life.
Being quirkless is not the end of the world.
You've taught him that over the past two years.
He's still getting acclimated to enjoying things, to feeling deserving of all of it. But his girlfriend helps him.
Turns out, Keigo likes being cozy. He likes thick socks and sweaters and anything with a firm cable-knit texture. He likes to be wrapped up in plush, patterned blankets from Costco. He has a favorite type of tea, now. And a preferred mug in the cupboard (it's the blue glazed one that you made for him during a cheap pottery class).
Keigo loves doing laundry - a task that he was never allowed to do for himself when he was a hero. There's something so precious about cleaning his own clothes. He finds it to be a meditative process - folding away clean clothes in his drawer makes him think of his childhood. Growing up, he rarely had anything clean to wear when he lived with his parents. And then when he was training at the Commission he was always in a uniform.
Now, Keigo has a seemingly endless collection of graphic tees and thick, wooly sweaters. He can wear whatever he wants, whenever he wants. Sometimes the power of choice is overwhelming, and he'll need to call in back up (you) to help him decide.
Keigo lets his body get softer. It's something you and his therapist help him figure out. He stops forcing himself to follow such a militant workout schedule. Instead, he finds new ways to enjoy movement. He joins an intramural basketball league. He sucks, but the guys are friendly and fun. He gets to just be Keigo the teammate, not Keigo the hero. He starts to enjoy taking long walks around the park - nowhere to fly to, nowhere to be. For once, he can breathe. He starts to loose all of his intense muscle, his abs. He feels self-concious about it. He's always been underweight - wiry and malnourished.
But now he eats the good food that you cook and he's learning how to use the stove and everything is just so delicious and lovely and he can't bear to keep the strict diet of his old life.
At night you strip him down and kiss every inch of his softer belly, cheeks that are no longer hollow. He lets you smooth your fingertips across his scars, across the points in his back that once anchored wings. He lets you love him, taking all that you can give. He starts to get more greedy with your touches, more open. He'll ask for what he wants and needs, and relishes all that you share with him. Making love to Keigo is gentle and slow - he learns that sex is so much more than he was taught. He didn't realize that it can be such a pure expression of love for another person. And once he learns...well, it becomes his favorite way to express his feelings for you.
Keigo grows a little more with each passing day - his world expanding far past the hero rankings and villain fights.
He learns how to adapt, and each day you help him explore sides of himself he didn't know could exist. He grows more comfortable in his skin, less afraid of the world around him. He makes civilian friends who like his jokes and invite the two of you to little rooftop dinner parties in the city. He takes up new hobbies - gardening. Hiking. He surrounds himself with things that grow.
Loving Keigo is easy, and he doesn't need wings to make your heart take flight.
fluff/comfort. short and sweet, reader's having an off day, but keigo's there to make it better. one bird-related nickname, because I had to. I've missed him, so this became a bit of a character study on him. <3
hawks doesn't mind a crowd.
rather, he knows how to command one. he's used to the attention that being a top ten pro-hero floats his way- the hundreds of eyes trained on him at any given moment, the cameras focused on him when he flies overhead, the stampedes in airports, malls, busy streets... usually he has no problem handling any of that.
today, however, he really wishes civilians would leave him be. it's been a busy day and all he wants is to go home to you, but for some reason everyone and their mother wants to stop him on his route back to the agency. a few pictures here and there are fine, especially on the rare occasion he has time to kill, but being stopped at every corner?
he's starting to think he's been hit with a rotten luck quirk of some sort.
still, he keeps his wings puffed up and tries not to think of the sleepy, mopey state he left you in this morning. he holds that charming (your words, not his) grin on his face whenever he sees a phone being pulled out in case you happen to scroll past it on social media later. he wants to look his best for you, after all.
finally, after stopping for a gaggle of eager kids, he makes his way through his agency's doors and lets some of his colleagues know that he'll be off his work cell for the rest of the day.
he knows if he's really needed, the commission will call his personal cell (he hates that they know his "private" number), but as far as he's concerned, once he's out of this building, he's all yours.
twenty minutes later he's entering your apartment and the relief is instant. once he shuts the door and locks it, hawks gets shed and he can exist as keigo again.
a year ago, he didn't really know who that was and it terrified him. but you've revived him, and he doesn't think that guy's so bad anymore- not so entangled with and tied to the commission's golden boy.
it took him a long time to realize that hawks didn't need to be every waking moment of his life. he loves being a hero- it's who he is down to his core. it's what he was raised to be, sure, but if things had gone differently, he thinks he'd be doing this anyway.
then you came along, and with your help, he's started to feel more and more like a person outside of his hero identity everyday. that is something the commission never thought to train him on.
so on days where you don't feel much like a person? he's more than happy to recharge your battery however he can.
after a quick trip the the bedroom to change, he wanders further into the apartment, following the scent of whatever it is you've left on the stove, hoping it leads to you.
"hey birdie," he says soothingly. it's a silly pet name he doesn't use often, but you always reward him with a smile, however small, whenever he does. he wraps his arms around you from behind and leaves a trail of kisses along your shoulder. "you're cooking?"
he's a little surprised you're up and out of bed, but it's a pleasant surprise nonetheless.
you lean back against his chest and rub your hands over your face. he likes the feeling of you melting into him. "mhm, I felt like I had to do something today."
"that's not always required of you," he points out, swaying you both from side to side. "especially when you're not feeling your best."
"I feel fin-"
"mentally, baby," he says, and he feel you still. he knows you're feeling fine physically, but he's more worried about your emotional state today. "you've had a rough week."
you shrug. even though he can't read your expression from this angle, he knows you're frowning. you're not big on admitting your feelings, he's learned, but he knows how to work around it.
"I hated that I couldn't be here with you today," he whispers. you turn in his arms to meet his eyes, probably to assure that you would never expect him to take a day off of work for your sake, but he raises an eyebrow and you stand down. "but I'm here now. let me ease your mind a bit, sweetheart."
your mouth pulls into a fine line, contemplating his words, before you shake your head and sigh. "you've had a long day, you don't have to play the hero anymore, babe."
he tsks at you and turns off the stove. he leads you to the couch, settling the both of you down so that you're laying on top of him. "it's an honour to be here for you. this isn't work, angel. I'm just caring for my partner after a bad day."
keigo sends some feathers to various parts of the apartment to grab some blankets, some tissues and whatever snacks are easiest to gather off the counters. "we don't have to talk about it, but just know that I'm here for you when you feel up for it. 'kay?"
you nod. "thank you, keigo."
he kisses your head and a satisfied smile curls onto his lips. his hand begins rubbing up and down your back, and his wings move to wrap around you for some extra security. "'course. now what do you want to watch?"
hawks might not mind a crowd, but if one thing is for sure, keigo will always prefer some quality time spent with you.
summary: Hawks is all too determined to get you to abuse your overtime pay all of a sudden
cw: sfw, f!reader, co-workers to lovers, making out, consumption of alcohol, alcohol induced amnesia (please drink responsibly!! don't be like this!!), mutual pining, reader is oblivious for the sake of professionalism, just good old fashioned fluff
a/n: this was written as part of @seiwas' anniversary event! thank you again for letting me take part!! Be sure to check out all the other works for this event. That's what I plan to do now that I'm finally finished with this behemoth.
This was especially fun to write, even if every time I went to edit, it demanded more and more from me. But Keigo is so special, I love him so much, so I was happy to do so. I hope you all enjoy :)
FYI, reader has a telekinetic Quirk, she can move objects with her mind so long as she can perfectly envision what the object is and where she wants it. Her friend also has a Quirk that allows her to view and project other people's memories, even if the other person has forgotten them. They're not especially sophisticated Quirks, just used in service of the plot tbh. Flashbacks denoted by italics (hopefully easy to distinguish!)

Another late night at Hawksâ agency, another night of typing up reports of his everyday heroics. From rescuing cats stuck in trees to taking down local crime syndicates, you dutifully chronicled it all as his Executive Assistant. At the end of his many patrols and missions, Hawks would collapse onto one end of the sofa in his office to relay the details, while you typed away beside him.Â
Considering the sheer number of incidents he addressed on the daily, there were hardly enough hours in your shift to put them all on record. And with him gone most of the day, it meant you couldnât complete the most time-consuming part of your role until he finally decided to show up.Â
At least today you had more than enough work to keep you occupied: synthesizing Hawksâ chicken scratch notes about his sidekicks into legible performance reviews for the quarter.Â
Youâre trying to think of a synonym for âdaringâ when you hear the telltale tapping of glass from the sloped window behind you. Hawks hovers in the air just on the other side, an apologetic smile gracing his face and a paper bag in hand.Â
You slide one of the glass panels open for him, trying your best to fight off the smile that threatens to match his own. Heâs later than usual.Â
âLook who finally remembered us in good olâ Kyushu,â you sigh dramatically as he enters his office through the open window.Â
âCâmon, you know I couldnât forget about you, Dove,â he says with a wink. âBesides, I only took this long so I could get us some grub. Thatâs gotta count for something, right?âÂ
âUgh, please donât call it grub. Youâre bird-adjacent, so you could literally have a bag full of insects.âÂ
âRight, âcause I normally make a habit of eating bugs at breakfast.â He lowers his visor so he can pin you with a glare devoid of heat, then discards it on his desk.Â
âThey do say early bird gets the worm. And youâre the fastest birdie I know, soâŚâÂ
âSeriously? Youâve gotta have more faith in me than that. At least a little bit.âÂ
He hands the bag off to you while he removes his thick coat. Your eyes drop to his abdomen at once. Itâs as if theyâre magnetized to his toned tummy. Something about the way his compression top clings to the muscles there is beyond flattering. But then the material rucks up slightly, revealing tanned skin and a dusting of flaxen hair that disappears into the waistline of his pants. Your breath hitches, which youâre more than certain Hawks could hear.Â
You pretend to clear your throat to mask the sound, hopefully, then tear your eyes from the danger zone that is his waist.Â
Hawks has his arms over his head, stretching them out along with his magnificent wings. He grunts and groans in relief as he loosens his body from what you assume was a demanding day. And he watches you as he goes about his routine, mischief alight in those golden eyes. You feel very much like prey under his gaze. The realization makes you shiver.Â
You need to retreat, and fast.Â
You snatch up the paper bag and hurry to the sofa, safely located at the complete other side of the room. You take a seat so you can unpack the food on the coffee table. Thankfully, the logo on the bag is from a local spot you frequent for lunch and not some insect cafe. From it you pull out two bowls identical in their contents: fluffy white rice, crispy golden karaage drizzled with kewpie mayo, seaweed salad, cubes of pillowy tamago, and pickled radish. Your mouth waters at the sight of your favorite go-to meal, but you still find the time to poke fun.Â
âFried chicken, huh? Youâll never beat the cannibalism allegations.âÂ
âYou are on fire with the jokes at my expense tonight.âÂ
You wince. Maybe your comments were a bit overkill. He is your boss at the end of the day, regardless of the banter youâve established.Â
âIâm so sorry, Hawks. That was incredibly inappropriate.â Now you feel doubly bad, ogling him one minute, teasing him the next.Â
âRelaaax. Never said I didnât like it,â he says with a wink. He drops down beside you on the couch, hands you a can of cold peach tea. âAnd I thought I told you when itâs just you and me, call me Keigo.âÂ
You pop off the lid of your bowl and bite into a piece of chicken. Itâs still hot like it had just been prepared. You hum contentedly and hurry to take another bite.Â
It isnât uncommon for you to spend your evenings with the winged hero, especially recently. He normally tries his very best to detail the events of his days at a more decent hour, but his speed and efficiency means he can be all over the place in the blink of an eye. And itâs not just villains he has to fight off, but his flocks of adoring fans. Encountering the latter certainly doesnât make for a speedy return to the agency. You would argue that he has the hardest time getting away from a crowd of tween fangirls than most of the hardened criminals.Â
You put your bowl down and sit cross-legged on the couch so you can face him. âWhy donât you tell me about your day, Keigo? That way, once weâre done eating, I can just go straight to writing the reports and you can head home. Wrap things up a little early for once.âÂ
"And here I thought you actually cared about me. But no, all you care about is work,â he groans.Â
âArenât you being a drama queen today? You know I care about you, honey.â You grab a napkin to wipe away some mayo from the corner of his mouth. âYou just seem tired is all. I donât want to keep you.âÂ
A strange look passes over his face, too quick for you to really comment on, let alone decipher. Keigo only shovels more food into his mouth.Â
âI guess we can talk about my day, as lackluster as it was. But youâre insane if you think Iâll let you go home on your own. Iâm never too tired to keep you safe.âÂ
Your heart melts at his adamance. You know heâs just being the consummate hero, ensuring you get home in one piece, but Itâs nearly impossible for you not to read too much into it. You remind yourself that he wouldnât let any of his employees venture out into the city on their own late at night, not just you.Â
âI suppose you can escort me home. Now what have you been up to? Spare no details.âÂ
âWell, you know I was in Musutafu for some press bullshit this morning.âÂ
You press your fingers into your temples, hard. âPlease tell me you didnât refer to an awards ceremony as âbullshitâ while you were there.â Â
This event has been your main source of anxiety for the past two days. It wasnât anything big, just a local ceremony honoring his recent rescue efforts in the district. Heâd been pleased to know the public came together to bestow the honor, less than pleased when it, naturally, garnered media attention.Â
Considering the distance from the agency, it was easier for Hawks to soar there on his own while you held down the fort. Meaning you werenât there to reign in his big mouth and the more abrasive aspects of his personality. What youâd seen on the broadcast hadnât aroused any dread. And while he is trending across various socials, you didnât come across anything but praise. So you'll consider this a win in your book.Â
âIâd never disgrace you like that." He salutes you, movements quick and stiff. Â
âAt ease, soldier. Iâll take your word for it,â you laugh.Â
âGood. Because you know itâs no fun being a disgrace when youâre so far away,â he says with a pout. âI save my worst antics for when I have you by my side.âÂ
If he werenât your boss and a top hero, youâd probably curse him out for joking like that. You still have nightmares about his behavior at the hero rankings earlier in the year.Â
âYou think youâre so funny, huh?â you ask.Â
âNope. I sure donât."Â
âAt least you didnât try to crack any of your jokes from what I saw on the livestream.âÂ
âKept an eye on me, did ya? Arenât you sweet.âÂ
âOf course. You looked handsome, by the way. The camera loved you.âÂ
âThank youââÂ
âHowever! You need to deal with your hair even when Iâm not there! Luckily people seemed to love the windblown look, so I wonât harp on it too much. But they did notice! Promise me youâll at least look in a mirror if youâre ever doing press solo. For my sanity.âÂ
âWowâŚFor once Iâd like a normal compliment from you. Donât you think Iâm owed that much?âÂ
âI thought you didnât care about all the pomp and circumstance around heroics.âÂ
âThatâs the beauty of a compliment, chickadee. Doesnât have to be about how fast and amazing of a hero I am. Can just be about me, you know.âÂ
âNoted. Now what else did you get up to today?âÂ
âThere was a bit of an incident on the coast. Fishing boat full of explosives and convicts. I took care of it pretty quickly, though.â Keigo cracks his knuckles, a cocky grin on his face.Â
âIâd expect nothing less from my favorite hero. Is that all you found on the ship? None of those Quirk suppressants or anything?âÂ
âYou know, now that you mention it.â Keigo sends a couple of feathers to his coat, draped haphazardly on his desk chair, to search through the many pockets. You have a couple more bites of food while you wait.Â
âAh, there we go. I found this on the shore while I was waiting for the baddies to get rounded up.âÂ
You just barely manage to tear your attention from your food in time to watch his feathers return to his wings. One of the larger plumes carries something you canât make out from this distance, not without your glasses. Itâs only when the feather hovers in your face that you realize that itâs carrying a spider conch, a beautiful, speckled shell with six spines that seem to reach out for you.Â
You gasp without meaning to. Itâs a bit of a dramatic reaction, you can admit. But youâve only ever found fragments of conch shells during your visits to the beach. And your collection is noticeably lacking in this variety.Â
âYou got this for me?â Your voice is but a whisper, emotion thick in your throat. Despite having collected seashells for ages, youâve never found anything quite like this. But you're still caught off guard by your tearful reaction. Maybe youâre getting your period?Â
âOf course, I got it for you.â He takes your hand, turns it palm-side up. The feather gently places the shell there and nestles into Keigoâs wing once more.Â
You inspect the conch thoroughly. The scent of the ocean yet clings to it, the exterior still gritty with sediment. Even the mouth of it, a soft blush pink, has clumps of once-wet sand inside. He really did find it at the beach.Â
âBut, how did you knowâŚâÂ
âThat you would love something like this? Remember our Christmas in July party?âÂ
âThe one I got belligerently drunk at? Definitely not.âÂ
Keigo laughs softly. âI remember enough for the both of us, I guess. Anyway, you grabbed a bunch of the shells that we had for decoration and berated me for using fake ones. It was pretty funny.âÂ
You cover your mouth in shock. Sure, you guys engage in cutting banter and playfully poke at each other throughout the day. But youâd like to think that, regardless of how casual your working relationship has gotten, youâd never verbally attack him. Especially over something so minuscule.Â
âI did not berate you...â But youâre hardly convinced. Drunk you is a whole other persona. She takes what she wants, drinks more than she should, dances on tables, smokes drunk cigarettes, and sprains her ankle. You havenât seen much of her recently, and for good reason. She is a menace to both society and your dignity.Â
âHow would you know? You were the one piss drunk, and I wasnât,â Keigo says with a smirk.Â
Your cheeks flame. âI forgot you donât drink.âÂ
âYeah, not my thing. Besides, who else wouldâve brought you home considering how mean you were being, huh?âÂ
âYou had to bring me home?â You cover the bottom half of your face with your hands. If only you had an invisibility quirk. âWhat else did I do? Did I try to fight Akihito in finance? Please say no.âÂ
His smile slips a bit. âWhat? No, waitâYou really donât remember that night? I figured you hadnât brought it up because you were just embarrassed.âÂ
âWhat would I have to be embarrassed about, Keigo?â You feel frantic. You havenât given much thought to how little you remember of that staff party. And since no one else has mentioned it, youâd assumed that nothing out of the ordinary had transpired.Â
In lieu of answering, Keigo pretends to zip his mouth shut. Your frustration evolves into horror. Was your behavior that night so unspeakable?
âI need you to tell me. As a friend, not my boss. Please.âÂ
Keigo hesitates, but then, with a sigh, he admits. âAside from the slurring and the stumbling, you didnât do anything that crazy. Sure, you yelled at me about the integrity of using real shells at a beach-themed Christmas party, but that was it. Donât sweat it, alright?âÂ
âAre you sure thatâs all?â Youâre not convinced, but you can hardly press him about it. He wonât divulge anything unless he really wants to.
âTrust me, not worth the stress. That was weeks ago. Now letâs just finish eating so I can recount my heroically dashing mid-sea clash in detail.â
You finish your reports fairly quickly after that; his day really was lackluster. Aside from the cargo ship, heâd only apprehended a handful of petty thieves and overzealous wannabe villains. You should be enjoying an early end to your night at home. Maybe with a relaxing bath and a glass of wine. Or better yet, settled in bed already. Â
Instead, youâre still in the office with Keigo. Chatting and setting his feathers in order after he had all but begged you to. He sits cross-legged on the ground while you remain on the couch. You help pick out debris and smooth down ruby red plumes while you talk about everything and nothing.Â
âI know that youâre an Endeavor stan, and Iâll forgive you for that. But itâs hard for me to fully trust you as a result,â you say.Â
âYouâre seriously basing my trustworthiness on my favorite hero?âÂ
âJust says a lot about you. The manâs approval rating is in the gutter. You even said it yourself.âÂ
âNooo, I said mine is higher than his. Not the same thing,â he says as he rouses his feathers, a quick blur of motion. âAnd whoâs your favorite? Probably someone basic, like All Might.âÂ
âDonât let anyone hear you calling him âbasicâ, weâll never recover from that,â you say. âAnd I already said my favorite hero is you.âÂ
He tilts his head back to look at you. A cute blush ruddies his cheeks, and his lips quirk up with a genuine smile, one that you mirror back at him.Â
But he puffs up his wings and recovers his trademark cockiness in no time.Â
âOf course, I am. You clearly have great taste, Dovey. Iâm the best there is. The cream of the crop. Mutant Beat Magazineâs Hottest Hero three years in a row.âÂ
You flick between his eyebrows. âSee, this is why I give you compliments so sparingly.âÂ
âHere's the thing. If you were more candid, like me, and complimented me all the time, Iâd get used to it. Then my head wouldnât get all big. Right? Riiiight?âÂ
âOh, honey,â you say contritely. âIt would explode.âÂ
Keigo bursts out laughing, and you canât help but giggle along with him. He keeps his eyes shut long after your amusement subsides, head still on your lap. You take the rare moment of inactivity to observe him quietly. His usually sharp features are softened by sleepiness, a sight that makes you swoon. Â
It feels natural, spending time with him like this. Being close like this. Youâre hard pressed to remember why thatâs such a bad thing.Â
Until he opens that infamous mouth.Â
âSee something you like?â Keigoâs eyes flutter open, and he looks at you expectantly despite the cheeky question.Â
âI just canât, umâŚcanât believe you can stay quiet for this long! Must be a new record.âÂ
You lift his head off your lap and slide away from him. Embarrassment settles like lead in your stomach. You canât believe he caught you gawking at him.Â
âWhy'd you go?â Keigo asks. He looks offended.Â
âI just remembered thereâs a photographer who wants to follow you around for a cover story. I need to text him back now that youâre here to sign off on it.âÂ
âOh, joy,â he drones.Â
âBe nice. Donât let your disappointment show while heâs shadowing.â You reach into each of your pockets for your phone but canât find it. You start searching the couch cushions.Â
âIâm not disappointed about him stalking me. Iâm frustrated with...â Keigo gestures at you and sighs. âDo you need help looking?â
âNo, itâs fine.â You imagine your cellphone in your palm, and in the time it takes to blink, it materializes in your hands. The screen flashes to life when you tap it. 20:46.Â
âShit, is it really that late? Maybe Iâll just call a car so you can go straight home.â You unlock your phone and open a rideshare app. Itâs a little pricey but at least youâll be home quick. You just need some distance between Keigo and your deluded heart.Â
Shadow falls over you, and your phone is plucked from your hands. He rests one hand on the arm rest, another on the back of the couch, effectively boxing you in. Your mistake is looking up at him. His face so close to yours. You can hardly escape his amber eyes, blazing with molten intensity.Â
âIâll take you home Dove. Itâs no trouble." His gruff voice is like sandpaper on your already frayed nerves.Â
âThanks! Iâll just ru-run and grab my things from my office. Iâll be right back.âÂ
You duck under his arm and quickly cross the room. You just need a moment away from him so you can readjust your grip on reality.Â
âCanât you use your Quirk to bring your stuff here?â he asks.Â
âI could, but...Iâm beat. Itâll be quicker if I just go into my office. I wonât be long.âÂ
Itâs a weak excuse, but itâs all you can think of. You slip out before he can protest further, or worse, follow you out.
The door slams shut behind you, and you race back to your office to calm your erratic pulse. You need to forget about this little crush. Itâs not only ridiculous, but supremely unprofessional. Heâs your boss. Number 2 on the charts. One of the most sought after bachelors in the country.Â
And Mutant Beatâs Hottest Hero three years running.Â
âMorning, Fumiko. How are you honey?â you yawn into your coffee the following morning. You step into your colleagueâs office with a mug of her favorite tea also in hand. You go to put it down on her desk, but it's littered with sticky notes. Theyâre all scribbled with meeting times, quick jots from sidekick interviews, random doodles, and shopping lists.Â
âGood morning. Another late night for you, huh?â Fumiko asks. She takes the tea with a gentle smile and has a sip, but hisses at the temperature, as she does every morning. She then plucks two neon orange notes off her desk, sticks them to the bottom of her monitor, and puts the steaming mug down in their place.Â
âTell me about it. I was here for nearly four hours.âÂ
âFour hours? What, did Hawks save the entire country twice or something?âÂ
âNot even close. He had a slower day, if you can believe that.âÂ
âAnd he still kept you occupied for that long? What were you even doing?â Understanding illuminates Fumikoâs face, and she smiles at you mischievously. âOhhh, I see.âÂ
Your brow furrows. âSee what? We were just talking and lost track of the time.âÂ
âRight, I got you.â Fumiko winks at you exaggeratedly. âRegardless, Iâm so jealous. You get to talk to Hawks all day, and I have to deal with everyone elseâs drama. Not only can five of the sidekicks not be scheduled to patrol together anymore, but those idiots in marketing have been sniping at each other all week. Their bickering almost lost the agency some energy drink collaboration, too. Now I have to meet with the entire team to figure out why. As if Iâm not busy enough with hiring.âÂ
âThat really sucks. Iâm sorry. Iâll leave you be so you canââÂ
âNo, no, no. I need you to stay here. I havenât even logged my overtime hours since last week because Iâve been so busy. Keep me company so I can finally do it.âÂ
You pull up one of the chairs from the opposite side of her desk and watch as she navigates through a sea of open tabs with ease. She truly is the embodiment of organized chaos.Â
As Fumiko fills in her time sheet, you notice something odd. Or at least, something slightly different from your own time sheet.Â
âWhatâs that 1.5 supposed to mean?â You point at the little number off to the side.Â
âThe overtime rate. We get time and a half.âÂ
âI know, but mine doesnât look like that. At least I donât think it does. Hawks usually puts the hours in for me so Iâm not entirely sure.â Youâve only filled it out once or twice when you first started working overtime. âMaybe thereâs another way of saying the same thing...Why are you looking at me like that?âÂ
âGet your laptop so you can show me. And if your pay is all messed up, donât sue please. I have enough on my plate as is.âÂ
âRelax, I wonât sue. Iâd lose anyway.â
âWhat makes you think that?â Fumiko asks.
âI wouldnât have Himari as my attorney if I did.â
You close your eyes for a moment and picture your laptop on the desk, right where a doodle of Hawks mid-flight is affixed. Your computer is right where you pictured it when you open your eyes. Â
âWhat a convenient Quirk. You shouldâve gone into heroics. Youâd be amazing with rescue efforts,â Fumiko says.Â
âDealing with Hawks is the closest to heroics I ever want to get. Besides, Iâm a pacifist.âÂ
Fumiko snorts.Â
âAnyway, this is what mine looks like. See itâs a little different.â Â
Fumiko squints at the screen, and you analyze it along with her. Keigo did in fact log the entire four hours yesterday when you probably worked for half that time.Â
Your friend suddenly directs her narrowed gaze at you. "Maybe I should be the one suing you.âÂ
âWhat did I do?âÂ
âYouâre being paid double time, babe.âÂ
âIsnât all overtime pay the same? Maybe thereâs a glitch.âÂ
âWillful ignorance. Itâs cute,â Fumiko sighs. âHow did you not know he was paying you that much over?âÂ
âI donât necessarily make a habit of checking my bank account. I know, I know! But so long as I have enough money for the things I want, I usually donât pay too much attention. It gives me anxiety.âÂ
âIf I were you, Iâd never be anxious about money again. And while I should be investigating this a little more as your HR rep, Iâm going to yet again turn a blind eye to Hawksâ favoritism. Just do me a favor and donât bring it up.âÂ
âWhat are you talking about âyet againâ? Thereâs no favoritism.â Right? Now that sheâs said it, a small part of you hopes youâre wrong.Â
Fumiko scrutinizes you like one would a profound piece of art they have trouble understanding. "You didnât always work so late, did you?âÂ
âBefore this past month, no. At least not as often. What does that have to do withââÂ
âAround the time of the staff party,â she mutters under her breath. âHmm, now it makes sense.âÂ
âThis is the second time Iâve heard the staff party be mentioned. I feel like Iâm missing something major,â you groan.Â
âOnly twice? Thatâs surprising, considering you kissed Hawks that night.âÂ
You can feel your neurons misfire as her words echo in your head endlessly.
âIâm sorry, I what?â you whisper. You really want to shriek and scream and cry. Maybe even laugh. But a whisper is all you can manage while your brain struggles to get back online.Â
âIt was the talk of the office for like a week,â Fumiko says. She takes another sip of tea before continuing. âYou went around kissing people on the cheek, telling them you loved them. Your usual drunk shenanigans. But then you got to Hawks and just kissed him. Right on the mouth. Donât know what you said to him, though. And I didnât get a chance to ask. You passed out in his arms afterward. Not that I fault you, cause same.âÂ
âAre you fucking with me?â Try as you might, but you canât recall any of this happening. Or maybe your brain really, really doesnât want you to. Â
âI told you sake is a silent killer. But you insisted that you were basically an alcoholic in college.âÂ
How have you been walking around the office for weeks since and this hasnât come up? Even if only a few people saw the kiss, you can say with utmost certainty that everyone knows about it by now.
âWas it at least a tiny peck? Like a friendly âI appreciate youâ kiss?âÂ
Fumiko slowly shakes her head from side to side.Â
You drop your head onto her desk. âI need to flee the country,â you cry.Â
âDonât be hasty,â she says, pulling you back up by the shoulders. âLetâs see if Himari can use her Quirk to help you remember. Who knows, it might not have been so bad.âÂ
âObviously had to be bad if my brain has blocked it from memory. Why would I do that? Why?âÂ
âStop wallowing. Hawks hasnât said anything about it to me, so you have nothing to worry about.â Fumiko looks up Himariâs calendar, packed nearly until the last 45 minutes of the day, and sends an invite labelled âCRISIS MEETINGâ for that time.Â
âJust try to keep yourself distracted for the rest of the day,â Fumiko says.Â
âThe rest of the day is the whole day.â You drop your head back onto the desk and contemplate adopting an entirely new identity. Crossing an ocean might be the move.Â
âPoor thing.â Fumiko rubs your back in soothing circles. âI truly hate to do this, but I have to kick you out. First meeting of the day is in three minutes.âÂ
âItâs ok, do your work. I have to look into hiring a hitman anyway.âÂ
âNot funny! I have to investigate stuff like that.âÂ
âAnd you have no time. I know, I know.âÂ
As soon as you retreat to your office, you flip both switches by the door; one shuts off the lights, the other transforms the glass wall fully opaque. Â
With both your closest friends set to be occupied until late afternoon, and your dread over seeing just about anyone else you work with, your only companions for the day are a mug of coffee and your utter mortification. Â
At least youâre able to focus on finishing up the performance reviews. Granted, with each review you complete, you plague yourself with the thought of that person snickering about you kissing Hawks. Itâs the ultimate humiliation ritual. Â
Luckily, your Quirk can bring snacks into your office whenever you feel particularly bored peckish. The one time you need the restroom is itâs own mission, but you manage it without running into anyone.
Before you know it, your day has passed in a painfully embarrassing blur.Â
Your phone buzzes suddenly and you jolt. Itâs only a notification about your food being delivered to the lobby of the building.
You use your Quirk to bring up the heavy bag full of premium sushi, an early dinner and expression of gratitude for your friends. Considering your more than generous pay, itâs the least you can do.Â
Fumiko arrives first. She sits in one of two chairs opposite you and inspects the sushi with an appreciative nod. âYou got the pricey stuff. Good, you should get used to buying me expensive meals.âÂ
Himari hurries in shortly after. She hugs you both and settles into the seat beside Fumiko.Â
âWhatâs the special occasion?â Himari asks when she sees the bag, close to bursting.Â
âThis one over here needs to see a memory from a few weeks ago,â Fumiko says.Â
âOh, the staff party? You were pretty gone that night,â Himari teases.Â
âAnd no one thought to cut me off?â you ask.Â
âI did! Way too late, but I did,â Fumiko says with a frown. âIn my defense, I didnât see you drink more than you have at our unofficial happy hours. But you know what, Aki from finance was acting really strange that night, too. I guess top-shelf stuff will do that to you.âÂ
You open up the containers and hand out chopsticks. The three of you eat in silence, appreciating the quality of the fish. You may never have regular sushi again.Â
âHowâd your meeting go with that shop owner?â you ask Himari as you pick up some pickled ginger. âSeemed to take all morning.âÂ
âIt was very strange, thank you for asking. I was searching for the store owner's memory of the attack, but didn't see it anywhere. He did, however, have a memory of breaking his own windows so he could cash out on the insurance company since the rest of the street was in bad shape.âÂ
âHey, want to switch jobs for the day? Iâd rather deal with that than a bunch of whiny interns from UA,â Fumiko says.Â
âNo, you donât. Because what's difficult is the store owner is still trying to involve the news stations even though his claim is fraudulent. Normally Iâd let it slide, he has no case, but Hawks doesnât want them to get any bad publicity for lying for a cash grab.âÂ
âWhat an odd situation,â you say. Keigo was not immune to bad publicity and didnât care if he got it either, a fact that you were all too familiar with.Â
âThatâs why I had to arrange a last-minute meeting with the owner and his attorney. Hawks said heâd never let anything happen to that store so he was confused why the owner filed a claim to begin with. Itâs your favorite so thatâs why he was extra cautious.âÂ
âMine?â you ask.Â
âNo, mine,â Fumiko deadpans. âObviously, sheâs talking about you. His favorite employee!âÂ
âWait, Iâm sorry,â Himari says sheepishly. âHe did ask me not to mention that detail, but itâs just us here.âÂ
âWhy would he care about my favorite store?âÂ
Himari looks at you like youâre stupid. You thought youâd only get this look from Fumiko.
âArenât you two a thing?â Himari asks.Â
You choke on your fatty tuna. âNo!Â
Himari looks to Fumiko for confirmation. She only shrugs.Â
âAre you sure he knows that?â Himari asks. âNo, are you sure you know that?âÂ
âThatâs why I scheduled our crisis meeting,â Fumiko says. âYou can reconstruct the memory for her and hopefully figure this whole thing out.âÂ
âYou didnât need to bribe me, but I still appreciate it,â Himari says sweetly. âAlright, everyone letâs hold hands. Fumiko and I will only be witnessing the memory, but you will feel like youâre living it in real time. Just close your eyes and think of one thing that happened that day. Can be from before you started drinking.âÂ
âI rememberâŚgoing into Hawksâ office. And putting a Santa hat on his head. It looksâŚ.âÂ
ââŚso silly on you, boss,â you say, barely containing your laughter.
âPlease donât call me boss. Is it so difficult to call me Keigo?âÂ
âYes, what if I slip up in front of someone? Besides, tonight I get to call you Santa.âÂ
âSomeoneâs in a good mood,â he says as he removes the hat and places it on his desk. Itâs rare for him to be here this early in the evening. But it had been a relatively quiet day as far as crime and villainy were concerned.Â
âWhatâs not to be happy for? We have our staff celebration in a few hours, itâs Friday, and Iâll finish my reports at a reasonable hour.âÂ
âAnd here I was thinking that smile was about seeing me,â he says, pretending to press down on a wound over his heart.Â
âI actually do love seeing you this early in the day. Talk about a gift. Even more reason to call you Santa now!âÂ
âEveryone getting gifts from me. What about my gift, huh? I think I deserve something. You know, for rushing back here to you. And with nearly nothing to report, too,â he says, a lazy smile on his face.Â
âHm, Iâll have to think of something good then.âÂ
âBe sure to surprise me, Dove,â he says with a wink.Â
The memory ends abruptly. When you open your eyes, Himari is red in the face while Fumiko looks smug. Â
âSorry, sorry,â Himari says. âIâve never seen you interact, just the two of you. Does he always call you that? Dove? Thatâs so cute!âÂ
âForget that. You call him by his given name? Confirmed, heâs in love with you,â Fumiko sings.Â
âLetâs just keep going, please!â You reach for their hands again. Your heart is beating erratically at the thought of him being in love with you, but your brain is being overly logical about the situation. You guys work so closely, it makes perfect sense to be on a given-name basis.
âYou sure you canât think of anything closer to the actual party? Otherwise, weâll be here all day,â Himari says. âEven if itâs just a detail, thatâll help me find the memory and Iâll take it from there.âÂ
âHow about...um...âSee something you like?â. Maybe that would work?âÂ
Fumikoâs mouth drops open, equal parts scandalized and amused. You shut your eyes tight, and squeeze her hand even tighter.
You and Himari nurse your drinks as you watch your colleagues enjoy themselves. While Keigo didnât care much about a bump to the Number 2 spot, you and the rest of the office were beyond thrilled and wanted to celebrate. You finally got him to cave after ceaselessly hounding him about it for weeks. But you didnât expect him to go all out like this. He even hired a party planner so you could enjoy the event without worrying about logistics.Â
Safe to say logistics are the last thing you're concerned about. The planner nearly transformed one of the larger conference rooms into a beach, complete with mounds of sand and palm trees decorated with multi-colored lights. Thereâs even a Christmas tree in one corner, decorated with strings of shells and a starfish on top. Presents for the entire office are stuffed underneath.Â
âIâm glad he agreed to this. We havenât had a staff outing since our beginning of year happy hour,â Himari says.Â
âThat was because a villain dropped in and destroyed half the bar. I think everyone developed staff gathering related PTSD.âÂ
âAt least we had a quick response time?â Himari lifts her green solo cup, and you shove your red one into hers, spilling most of your drink in the process.Â
âWhoops. Guess I donât know my own strength.â You both laugh like youâve said the funniest thing on earth.Â
Youâre not sure what you want to drink next. Keigo bought nothing but the best for the celebration, and now itâs impossible to make a decision. You start to make your usual gin and tonic, until you see a bottle of tequila that looks intriguing. Before you can think better of it, you dump some in there. You also add a splash of lemonade for good measure. Surprisingly enough, you can hardly taste any alcohol. Â
âOh look, there are even shells on the table. Isnât this cute?â Himari asks. She holds up a small calico scallop.Â
You take the shell from her so you can look at it more closely. Aside from the fact that this variety isn't native to this region, thereâs a perfection to it that unsettles you, down to the texture. Too smooth to be real...Â
You donât even bother telling Himari where youâre going, you just march over to where Hawks is standing with one of his sidekicks.Â
âWhat the hell is this?â You hold up the shell for him to inspect. His sidekick immediately scurries off.Â
âDecoration?â he asks, amusement coloring his tone. âNot up to your standards, Dove?âÂ
âNo, itâs a disgrace. How can you stand to have these soulless imitations littered around? They donât even carry the spirit of the sea!âÂ
Keigo chuckles lightheartedly. Â
âStop, Iâm serious!â you giggle. Even when youâre upset, his laugh never fails to get you to join in.Â
âRight, Iâm sorry.â His eyes soften as he watches you, still overcome by laughter. âFrom here on out, no more soulless shells. That work for you?âÂ
âI suppose,â you say. âAside from that, this is a really nice party. Iâm excited to see what you got everyone as a gift.âÂ
âAnd what about my gift from you, huh? Youâre getting two gifts, and I get none? Youâre gonna break my heart.âÂ
Shit. You forgot all about your promise from earlier. Even though heâs just teasing, you do want to give him a gift. Heâs been working hard lately. And the way heâs looking at you, smiling with even his golden eyes. You canât disappoint him.Â
âSee something you like?â Keigo asks. Gone is that sweet smile. In its place is a wicked grin that sets your heart racing.Â
âUm, I-I was lost in thought! Yeah, thatâs it. Still thinking about your gift! But I promise itâll be good. Now let me go brainstorm⌠elsewhere.âÂ
âWait, you donât have to goââ he calls after you.Â
But you ignore him and rush over to where Fumiko and Himari are. You hate it when youâre reminded of your little crush on your boss. You've done your best to maintain as professional a relationship as possible, but heâll threaten to ruin it when he calls you âDoveâ and smiles at you all warm and sweet like that.Â
You down the rest of your drink and frown. Curse him and his cuteness.Â
âAre you ok?â Fumiko asks.Â
âNo. I need one last drink. Be right back.âÂ
Unfortunately, Moeâbetter known by her hero name, Burninââ and a few of the other sidekicks have different plans for you. They are mostly young, freshly graduated from UA with honors, and have liquor for blood, apparently. You donât know what possesses you to go shot for shot with them. They can clearly metabolize alcohol much quicker than you.Â
âI love you guys so, so much. Youâre so much fun,â you say after a round of cold sake. That one clouds your head immediately. You go around telling everyone how much you appreciate them. Youâre near tears once you get to Moe.Â
âMoe, I love you the most. Youâre my favorite sidekick. I hope you open your own agency one day!â You hug her tight and give her a big, sloppy kiss on her cheek.Â
âStoppp, I love you, too! Youâre the best.âÂ
Your unsteady legs lead you back to Fumiko and Himari with great effort. You throw your arms around them both, nearly dragging them to the ground with you. They manage to keep you all from falling. Once youâre mostly steady, you pull your girls close, kiss them both on the cheek.Â
âI love you guys; youâre the best friends a girl could have,â you say.Â
âAww, love you!â Himari kisses your cheek in kind.Â
âI love you, too. Both of you,â Fumiko says. âBut the two of you are officially cut off. I mean it! Donât make my job any harder, ladies.âÂ
âSpeaking of difficult jobs, I canât think of a gift to give Hawks. Help me, please,â you whine.Â
âYou could give him a little kiss. The one you gave me just now made me soooo happy,â Himari says.Â
âBut I canât just go up and kiss him.âÂ
âSure, you can,â Fumiko says. âBut if it would make it easier, just get him under some mistletoe. Make it less obvious.âÂ
âYouâre a genius!â you gasp. "Have you seen any?âÂ
All three of you scan the room. The overhead lights were shut off a bit ago, so you have to rely on the colorful strobe lights to see. And with the room teeming with drunk heroes and office workers, it's even more difficult to truly see.Â
âOh, there it is!â Himari points towards the doorway where a sprig of mistletoe hangs.Â
âThatâs too high up,â you moan.Â
âJust use your Quirk to get it, no biggie,â Fumiko says.Â
âWhoa. You really are a genius.âÂ
It takes much longer than usual to summon the little bundle of mistletoe to you. Your inebriated brain keeps picturing poinsettias and holly. Once it eventually appears in your hands, you waste no time in stumbling over to Keigo.Â
âLook who finally came backâoof.â Â
You crash into him hard, but Keigo steadies you with warm hands on your waist. You snake your arms around his trim midsection tightly, and he reciprocates a moment later.Â
âHavinâ a good time?â he asks.Â
You rest your chin on the center of his chest so you can look up at him. Your face splits with your smile.Â
âIâll take that as a yes,â he laughs. âIâm glad. I like seeing you all giddy.âÂ
âDid you know Christmas is my most favorite holiday?â You dangle the mistletoe in front of Keigoâs face. His eyes widen with interest.Â
âYeah, I did, actually.â He drags his fingers along your spine, up and down, up and down..âWhy do you think weâre having a Christmas in July party in the first place?âÂ
âWait, wait wait. This was your idea? For me?âÂ
âSure was. No need to thank me or anything,â he says with faux nonchalance. âSo, howâd I do? Fake seashells aside?âÂ
You donât even answer the question. You take his face into your hands and kiss him. He makes a sound of surprise against your mouth, but he pulls you entirely too close and kisses you right back, slow and charged. Keigo licks into your mouth, drawing out a soft moan from you. The caress of his tongue on yours makes you shiver. Â
You set your teeth into his bottom lip and tug as you part from the kiss. Keigoâs mouth eagerly chases after yours, and he kisses you again with a groan. Your fingers settle into the thick nest of ash blond hair to get him closer to you. Youâre not sure youâll have your fill of him, not here. Â
âNow thatâs a nice gift,â he says as he kisses the corner of your mouth. âBut I believe you owe me one more. Remember, I got you two gifts.âÂ
He draws away slightly and gives you that radiant smile that makes you weak in the knees. More so than usual.Â
âNooo!â Himari and Fumiko yell in protest as the memory fades away.Â
âWhy did you choose that moment to pass out?â Fumiko whines. âIt was just getting good!âÂ
âThe better question is why did you encourage me to kiss him? As if that wouldnât make your job that much more difficult.âÂ
âI didnât think it would since I also thought you guys were a thing,â Fumiko says.Â
âWhy wouldnât I tell you guys if we were dating?âÂ
âI just assumed he wanted to keep things hush hush,â Himari says, and Fumiko nods in agreement. âBut weâre not finished, we have to see what happened afterwards.âÂ
âWe saw the kiss. Isnât that enough?â you sigh. You feel equal parts humiliated and hopeful. Now that youâre reliving the kiss, sober of mind, itâs hard to dispute that Keigo enjoyed it. Even though you have drunk youâs confidence to thank, you think youâll have to take a vow of sobriety.Â
âNo, itâs not. What if something important went down when you got home?â Himari asks. Â
âYeah, what if you guys hooked up? I would want to know,â Fumiko says.
Both you and Himari stare at her, but Fumiko doesnât waver under the weight of your judgment. Â
âYouâre such a perv,â Himari laughsÂ
âWhat? I sincerely doubt that you did. Hawks is a gentleman. But youâre very convincing when you get to drinking like thatââÂ
âSee if you can remember anything,â Himari interrupts. âYou blacked out so Iâm not too confident, but I remain hopeful.âÂ
You begrudgingly take their hands again. Now that youâve recalled the events of the party, it's a little easier to remember Keigo flying home with you. The cool night air on your face, in your hair. And how parched you were when you came to.Â
While you feel beyond disoriented, youâre grateful to be nestled securely in your bed. You must have passed out as soon as you got home. Youâre still in your party clothes. Your head pounds insistently as you push yourself into a seated position.Â
You turn on the lamp on your bedside table and wince. Even the small, warm light is enough to worsen your headache. Fortunately for you, the light reveals a glass of water waiting for you to drink. You donât remember getting it at all. Maybe you summoned it again in your sleep.Â
The cool water is a godsend; you gulp it down too quickly and immediately regret it. Youâre going to need much more than that, but getting up sounds like an unreasonable punishment at this moment.Â
âYou feeling ok?âÂ
You yelp when you hear a manâs voice from your adjoining bathroom, but itâs too dark in there to see. Did you bring someone home from the party? You sincerely hope not.Â
You sigh in relief when Keigo emerges, armed with a bottle of painkillers and a makeup wipe. He sits down on the bed beside you and take your chin in hand. He gently cleans your face with the wipe, assessing you carefully as he does. His golden eyes flit around your features as if to pick you apart, layer by layer.Â
âNo,â you moan. âI feel like I got Detroit Smashed through a building.âÂ
âHere, let me get you some more water so you can take these.â One of his feathers detaches from his wings and whisks the empty glass away. âA little birdie told me you had 5 shots with the sidekicks, and at one point said you wanted to try a little bit of every bottle. What do you have to say for yourself, hm?âÂ
âWill you kiss me again?âÂ
Keigo laughs softly but shakes his head. âI shouldnât have kissed you earlier, as much as I clearly wanted to. Youâre way out of it, chickadee.âÂ
âAm not.âÂ
He raises his eyebrows at you. Youâre not fooling him.Â
âWell, Iâm less drunk than before, but still drunk enough that Iâm not too nervous to ask for another kiss. I like you too much, makes it hard to be normal around you.âÂ
âNow you want to stroke my ego, huh?â Keigo smoothes away the strands of hair plastered to your forehead and kisses you there. Featherlight and sweet.Â
âThatâll have to do for now,â he says, his lips brushing your skin. âAsk me for another one when you can think straight, yeah?âÂ
âOk, Iâll have to take you up on that.âÂ
âI sure hope you do,â he says.
Keigo rises from the bed then and makes his way to your open window. He crouches onto the ledge, preparing to take flight.
âWhere are you going? Stay here with me, please. That way I can have my kiss as soon as I wake up,â you say with a pout.Â
Keigo turns to face you, chuckling affectionately at your unreasonable request.
âIâve got a night patrol to make up for attending the party. Donât worry, I wonât get into anything too crazy.âÂ
âBut what about your feather? Why not wait for it?â you ask. You're not sure why you're so desperate to keep him here, but you don't have a solid excuse either way. You can hear the sound of the tap running. The feather should be back with a glass full of water any second now. A thought comforting enough to move you to tears.Â
âKeep it with you for the night. That way if you need anything, Iâll know to come back. Take care of yourself, Dovey.âÂ
The memory is cut short by squeals of delight. Himari and Fumiko are bouncing in their seats, excited like theyâd been the one to get a goodnight kiss from Hawks.Â
And now your friends have had a front row seat for a PSA on the horrors of indulging in far too much alcohol during a work function. Probably not the most effective PSA. You did make out with Keigo, as inappropriate as it was.
Itâs difficult to reconcile that your less than savory behavior might have done you a favor as far as advancing a relationship with Keigo is concerned. Less so with advancing your career and social standing within the agency.Â
âWill you kiss me again?â God, you canât believe you even asked him that.Â
âIâm never drinking again,â you grumble.Â
âThatâs all you surmised from this?â Himari asks incredulously.Â
âYou need to march into his office right now and demand your kiss! Iâm sure heâs been waiting for you to do just that,â Fumiko says.Â
âYouâre an awful HR rep,â you say to her. âAnd I canât just do that. Heâs my boss.âÂ
âHe basically begged you to," Fumiko groans. "And like I said, I already assumed you two were dating. Itâs fine, promise.âÂ
âCan you tell me why you guys even thought that?â you ask. Youâd always thought your interactions with him were casual, more aligned with that between friends, not lovers.Â
âYou guys arenât overly obvious if thatâs what youâre worried about,â Fumiko says.Â
âItâs the small things. You always bring an extra lunch for him. Thatâs probably why you got so much sushi. You know we canât eat all this,â Himari says. Â
She certainly has your number. The three of you hardly made a dent in the food. And you still have Keigoâs favorite rolls safely stowed away. Â
âAll he'd eat is crap if I didnât,â you say under your breath. It's useless trying to defend yourself against these two.Â
âAnd youâre always smiling at each other and laughing and touching each otherâs arms,â Fumiko adds.Â
âYou look for him as soon as you clock in and when we come back from lunch meetings. But in your defense, he comes to find you as soon as heâs back from patrol. Now that I know you guys arenât a thing yet, itâs cute that you guys subconsciously do this,â Himari says.
âI doubt he comes straight here after patrols. Youâre exaggerating.âÂ
âConveniently enough, it is about time for Hawks to get back from his evening patrol. How much you want to bet he comes straight here?â Fumiko asks. Â
She rises from her chair and marches over to your door. She swings it open, turns on the lights, but leaves the glass frosted. Â
âHimari and I will hide out in the corner. If he stops by here in the next 5 minutes, you owe us lunch for a week.âÂ
Like clockwork, you hear Keigo whistling down the hallway maybe two minutes later. His song gets louder and louder as he approaches your open office. Â
âHey, Dovey.â He knocks on the open door and pokes his head in. Your heart leaps at the sight of him, windswept and flushed from wherever heâd been patrolling. âGot you some cheesecake as a preemptive âsorry Iâm monopolizing your time on a Thursday nightâ gift.âÂ
âWhy are you back so early from patrol?â you ask a bit harshly. Youâre just irritated that youâll have to foot the bill for whatever classy lunches your so-called friends will want to indulge in next week.Â
âOuchies. I was flying so fast cause I wanted to be with you.âÂ
Keigo peers around the door upon hearing barely concealed snickering. He spots your unruly friends huddled in the corner, hands over their mouths and blushing Â
âOh, hi ladies, youâre still here.âÂ
âYes, but Iâm about to head out. I was just looking through candidates for the open sidekick position. Needed some extra eyes,â Fumiko says.Â
âWhat a coincidence. Iâm also planning to head out for the day,â Himari adds.Â
âAll good, all good. Enjoy the rest of your night,â he says. âAnd you, stop by my office whenever youâre ready, yeah?âÂ
You nod, not trusting your voice.Â
Keigo winks at you and saunters over to his office, whistling that same little tune as he goes. Once his door latches shut, your friends jump and squeal again.Â
âAnd you told me nothing was going on between you two?â Fumiko says in disbelief.Â
âThere isnât! At least, I didnât think there was. Sure, I have a crush on him but who doesnât? I just never thought heâd feel the same.âÂ
âCanât believe youâre making the big bucks, and you can miss something as obvious as that,â Fumiko laughs. Upon noting the confusion on Himariâs face, Fumiko adds, âShe has a higher overtime rate, courtesy of big boss himself.âÂ
Himari smiles wide. âYeahhh, donât keep wasting time with us. Go get your man.âÂ
âI expect a full report tomorrow morning. In fact, Iâm scheduling an emergency coffee crisis meeting,â Fumiko says.Â
Your friends say their goodbyes and wish you luck before hurrying out of your office. Now that youâre by yourself, the gravity of the situation finally settles. You kissed Keigo. And Keigo fully kissed you back. Â
With tongue.Â
You cover your face and shriek quietly to yourself. Is your life even real? Â
You take a few deep, steadying breaths. Your nerves threaten to get the best of you, but you remind yourself itâs only Keigo. Your friend, your charge. So what if he also happens to be the most beautiful man to walk the planet? You can deal with that, right?Â
You grab your laptop and your phone, force yourself out of your chair so you can make the now long walk to his office. You hesitate once you arrive at his door. How will you be able to get anything done when all you can think of is the slide of his soft, plump lips against yours. His fingers dancing along your spine? Â
âUgh, get it together! You can talk to him like normal. No need to make things weird,â you say to yourself.Â
You push the door open; Keigo's sprawled on the couch, a hand over his eyes. Heâs only wearing that dangerous compression top again, and you wonder if a higher power is determined to make things difficult for you.Â
âThought Iâd waste away before you got here,â he says, feigning despair.Â
âSorry about that.â You assume your perch on the couch and open your laptop. âLetâs get started.âÂ
Keigo recounts the events of his day with his usual quips sprinkled throughout. But itâs so hard to volley them back, let alone focus on anything other than that night, that kiss. Truth is, youâre not sure how to broach the topic of said kiss. It was weeks ago. What if it was just a heat of the moment kind of thing? For all you know, he could be over it by now.Â
âThen I got slammed into concrete. Hurt like a bitch but still wasnât as painful as you ignoring all my jokes,â Keigo says. Â
You finally look up at him when you realize youâve just written âignoring all his jokes.â He tilts his head at you, concern etched into his face. With a sigh, you close your laptop and place it on the coffee table.Â
âIâm sorry, Iâm just a little distracted,â you say.Â
âWell, whatâs on your mind? Maybe I can help.âÂ
Words elude you. Or rather, the correct words do. Â
âI was looking at my overtime pay earlier, and I think thereâs something wrong.âÂ
âWhat, youâre not getting enough?â he asks, a bit distressed.Â
âNo! No. Itâs too much. I have the highest overtime rate in the entire company. Isnât that a mistake?âÂ
Keigo furrows his untamed brows, but then he chuckles. A hearty laugh that makes you want to shrink into yourself instead of laughing along with him. Â
âItâs no mistake. I want to make sure youâre taken care of. Just like you take such good care of me. No feathers off my wings if I give you a teeny, tiny bonus.âÂ
âDoesnât seem teeny tiny to me, Keigo. Youâre paying me double time basically every day of the week. Even yesterday you put in four hours when we spent most of the time chatting instead of working. Itâs... highly unethical!"Â
âWouldnât be the first unethical thing Iâve done,â he says mirthlessly.Â
Your nerves dissipate at once. âWhat are you talking about?âÂ
âItâs nothing, donât sweat it. Weâre having a moment, letâs focus on that.âÂ
âKeigo, I swear if youâre mixed up in something and you arenât telling meââÂ
âNope. Iâm an angel. See the wings?â He flaps them for emphasis.Â
âMore like a fallen angel. Your hair looks like you have devil horns today.â Â
You edge closer to him on the couch. Once you reach him, you card your fingers through the ash blond strands until they look somewhat presentable. You admire your handiwork until you realize how close youâve gotten to him.Â
âSorry.â You try to inch away, but Keigo snags your wrist and only pulls you closer. Youâre nearly in his lap now.Â
âNo need to apologize. I like when weâre up close and personal.â His voice has taken on a gravelly quality. His eyes dart down to your lips, something youâd otherwise miss if you werenât staring at him so intently. Your heart stutters in its beating.Â
âOh, right.â You turn away from him. Your face is hot from his blatant appraisal.Â
âWhat are you thinking about thatâs got you all shy, huh? Itâs not like you,â he says.Â
You try to steel your nerves. The ball is in your court now, but youâre not sure how to serve. Not without Drunk Youâs liquid courage. Â
No, you can make the first move without her. Sheâs a huge liability, so you shouldnât rely on her anyway.Â
âDo you...â Youâre not sure how to phrase it. You feel so nervous and shy. Get. A. Grip!Â
âDo I...?â he asks, humored by your anxious demeanor.Â
âDo you think I could cash in on my kiss now? You still owe me one. Or I guess, I owe you one? The details are still a little fuzzy.âÂ
He looks surprised, then delighted. âWell, of course you can Dovey. A kiss voucher from me to you doesnât really expire.âÂ
Keigo cups your face in his hands and pulls you close. Noses graze each other, breaths intermingle. Your blood simmers in your veins. Â
âI knew youâd come around,â he says, then brushes his lips against yours, slow and delicious. The scrape of his stubble on your skin makes you sigh into his mouth. Youâre content to revel in the closeness, the softness of this moment youâre sharing.
Heâs too good a kisser. You canât believe you made out with him like this and didnât even remember it.
Keigo gently guides you back onto the couch, slotting his waist between your legs to kiss you more thoroughly. The ardency comes naturally. You grip his hair to pull him closer, ruining your previous efforts to tame his wild locks. But the taste of him is addicting, and youâre feeling especially famished. Â
You finally part from each other with panting breaths. Seeing him now, blushing and thoroughly pleased, you start to feel a bit of guilt. All these weeks have gone by without mentioning that night. You can only imagine how confused he must have been feeling.Â
âIâm sorry it took so long,â you say as you give him a soft peck.Â
âI wasn't too worried. You know Iâm optimistic to a fault.â He presses a quick kiss to your lips again and you feel yourself flush with pleasure. âBut I will say, it was a bit of a mistake for you to kiss me.âÂ
âWhat? Why is that?âÂ
âBecause now itâll be impossible to get me to do anything without a kiss from you first. Iâm gonna make your life even more difficult,â he says with a lopsided smile.Â
âOh, no. Whatever shall I do?âÂ
âWho knows?â His wings slightly curl inward, like heâs trying to hide you for himself. âBut we might as well make out some more until you figure it out.âÂ
Notes: In this chapter its Hawk's turn to save the reader! Followed quickly thereafter by their first date. Keigo remains as fumbling and adorable as ever, First kisses

Previous, Next
It had been a couple weeks since that night at the bar, and Keigo was losing his mind a little bit (so fucking much). He couldnât find you anywhere. Heâd been the dumbest asshole alive and didnât zip his fucking jacket pocket before he flew home after his day with you, and heâd lost the little paper youâd written your number on for him. And the worst part? The part that made him even more stupid? He hadnât even gotten your name. Heâd been so wrapped up in talking to you about shit that was somehow simultaneously incredibly deep and absolutely meaningless, that heâd forgotten to ask.
And apparently a physical description paired with important key words like âgorgeousâ and âkind eyesâ somehow wasnât helpful enough when he had literally no other information to give his team. He couldnât exactly put out an ad. Thatâs a good way to find nothing but a bunch of crazies.
So now, he found himself searching for you everywhere. Every time he made a rescue, every time he flew by an unshaded office window on patrol, every press event, he searched. And he hadnât caught even a glimpse of you. So yeah, he was losing his mind.
Because how was it that you were instantly someone he didnât have to perform for? That he didnât have to put on the façade and be Hawks for. He was just Keigo with you, not that heâd told you that either. Fucking christ he was dumb. He wanted to put his head through a wall. Maybe youâd be on the other side. Maybe heâd imagined you, and heâd actually just been in some alley or empty hotel room sleeping off whatever heâd been drugged with. Maybe it was all a fucking dream and heâd never get the chance to-
âHawks.â
His attention was pulled back to the present by his moniker being called through his headphones. âIâm here,â he responded, tone clipped, professional, attentive.
âVillain attack at the convention center off 5th. Thereâre other heroes on scene, but they need a flight quirk for rescue.â
âIâm on my way.â
He got there in mere minutes, getting to work immediately clearing the top third of the building one floor at a time, starting with the one closest to the fire. It didnât take long for him to have gotten nearly everyone to safety; so in the zone that he hardly even registered faces as he assured people that they were going to be okay, that they were safe now. That is, of course, until the very last person was in his arms and his feet were almost back down on the ground.
âThank you, Hawks.â
Keigoâs eyes went wide at hearing that voice grace his ears again, and he turned to see it was you cradled in his arms, holding onto him with a nervous death-grip that still managed to be the most respectful way someone had touched him all day. The toes of his boots had barely brushed the sidewalk before he took back off, shooting back up into the sky without bothering to set you down first.
âHawks, where are you going?â came through his headphones.
He didnât hesitate to snap back, âThe other heroes can take that guy, and the rescue is done. I need a minute for personal reasons,â before turning off the comm line altogether.
âIâm sorry, am I âpersonal reasonsâ?â you questioned, voice raised to be heard over the wind.
He didnât respond right away, instead tightening his grip slightly to cradle you closer to his chest. As if you had anywhere else to go right now anyway, but he couldnât risk letting you metaphorically or literally slip through his fingers. Not when heâd already been through two weeks of mundane, performative, bullshit with the glowing memory of you sitting in the back of his head. Keigo loathed the idea of putting you down, which is why, once he was high enough to be out of viewing range, he slowed his flight, and it conveniently took him way longer than normal to find a âsafeâ rooftop to touch down on. But eventually, he had to give up the act, and he landed gently on the concrete roof of the tallest building on its block, careful to be out of the direct eyeline of any nearby windows.
There was a moment of silence after the soft âthank you,â you gave after he set you down. It stretched as Keigo searched in himself for the right thing to say; nothing felt like enough to tell you all the things he wanted to say.
Instead, he blurted, âIâve been looking for you.â
At the same time as you attempted, âCan I ask-â and for a moment you froze, confused, before, âHuh?â
Keigoâs face scrunched as he internally scolded himself for fumbling like this. âIâm sorry,â he started again, âFor not calling, and for-â
âOh, no,â you interrupted with a shake of your head, your hands shooting out in front of you as though to wave the apology out of the air. âItâs okay, really, I get it. Youâre busy, and Iâm just some random person from a bar. I promise, Iâm not going to try anything, you donât have to protect your reputation from me.â
The manâs heart sank, and heâs sure the horror he felt was clear as day on his face. âIs that why you think I brought you up here?â
âIs it not?â
The noise that escaped his throat was something between a laugh and a cry. He was mortified. Because of course you would think thatâs why he wanted to talk to you alone, away from prying eyes, it made perfect sense. The rankings were a popularity contest above all else and it could massively hurt a heroâs standing to have someone speaking openly about them being such an asshole. And on a more personal level, Keigo was near certain it would cause an uproar in his fanbase if they found out heâd called out sick to spend the day with a woman heâd just met, not that it was any of their business. He deflated, trying his best not to look like a kicked dog as it happened, because this wasnât your fault, you shouldnât feel guilty for any of it.
âNo, I uhâŚâ he huffed, mumbling to himself about how dumb he was about to look, before throwing himself under the bus, âI lost your phone number.â Your eyes narrowed slightly, curious and suspicious, so he explained, âI uh, put the paper in my jacket pocket, cause, you know, my phone was dead, and then I flew home, and when I got there, I realized the pocket was unzipped⌠and empty.â
Your hand flew up to cover your mouth like you were trying to hide a smile. âReally?â
There was a barely restrained laugh in your voice that made Keigoâs shoulders drop even farther. This was definitely ruined. You for sure thought he was too much of a dumbass for him to recover this. But heâd be damned if he didnât try. âSo, Iâve been looking for you all over the place, or at least as much as I can without being obvious, but youâre a hard woman to find. And I couldnât ask for help from anyone at my agency, cause I donât even know your name so I-â and he was stunned silent when you gently interrupted to tell him.
âAnd well, to be fair, you never told me yours either,â you mentioned almost off-hand.
âKeigo! Itâs Keigo, Iâm,â and he cleared his throat a little to regain his composure. âIâm Takami Keigo, itâs nice to⌠meet you?â
At that, you finally chuckled. âItâs nice to meet you, too, Keigo. Even if you had to abduct me from a crime scene to make it happen.â
âHey! I saved you from it first, didnât I? And everybody else was okay too.â
You popped an eyebrow at him, incredulous and gorgeous, and asked, âHow would you know? You turned your comms off.â
For a moment, face fell almost as far as his stomach, until he remembered, âNah, theyâd call me on my cell if it was bad.â
âAre you sure it isnât dead?â
The unserious dig made Keigo roll his eyes, but he smiled anyway and took half a step closer to you. âIâm sure. But if youâre looking to liven it up, Iâd love to get your number,â and he pulled the device from his zipped pocket and offered it to you, surprised at himself for the way his swagger seemed to have returned a little despite still being in your presence, âwithout a little piece of paper to lose in the meantime.â
That made you laugh more openly, and Keigoâs face lit up when he saw the smile on yours. Still, you reached for the device being offered to you, already open to a ânew contactâ page. You filled it out and sent yourself a message before handing the phone back. âDoes this mean I should expect to hear from you this time?â
He smirked, âAll the time, probably. At least until you get annoyed with me.â The thought crossed his mind to wonder whether your cheeks hurt like his did from so much smiling.
Your head quirked in question. âIs that something youâre worried about?â
Not for the first time with you, Keigo found himself feeling seen in a way that made him both uncomfortable in its newness and incredibly cared for. His hand reached up to the back of his neck in attempt to quell his nerves when he answered, âYeah, Iâve been told I can be a little much when I get excited about something.â
The smile you bore softened, and you reached up with gentle fingers to brush a piece of his windswept hair from Keigoâs forehead. âI would be honored to be something Takami Keigo gets excited about.â
âYouâŚâ the man started with wide eyes. Takami Keigo, youâd said. Not Hawks. You wanted the person, not the hero. And he knows that shouldnât surprise him, given everything about your interactions so far, but it disarmed him, nonetheless. âCan I-â and his arms reached out and froze in uncertainty as his words died.
You seemed to understand his ask, though, because your arms opened to welcome him and Keigo immediately closed the space to wrap his own arms around you. âAre you busy tomorrow? I get off shift at four, I can take you for dinner, or we can go do something, I just want to see you.â
He pulled away only far enough to look down at you for your answer, arms still draped around your waist. When you didnât answer right away, he moved to drag his thumb lightly over your cheek. âYou gotta answer me sweetheart, or Iâm gonna start getting nervous.â
You ended his anticipation with your agreement, âDinner sounds amazing, Keigo. Pick me up at five?â
His trademark cocky smirk appeared when he asked, âYou want me to fly or drive?â
-
There was a knock on your door at 4:55pm.
Opening it revealed Keigo, dressed in neatly styled street clothes and accessories, holding a bundle of flowers. âHey! I hope you like these, I havenât had a chance to ask your favorite,â he announced as he handed them to you.
The smile that grew on your face matched his own. âTheyâre beautiful, Keigo, thank you. Do you want to come in while I put these in water?â
âOh, yeah? What happened to dinner first?â he asked, all cocky and flirtatious.
You only rolled your eyes light-heartedly as you turned away, trusting that Keigo would come in and close the door behind him. You tried not to be too self-conscious about the way you could see him looking around in your space. He was respectful, didnât touch things, but was certainly snooping a little as you tended to the lovely bouquet heâd brought you. When you were done, you set the vase gently on the counter, then, âFind anything interesting?â you asked, leaning against the doorframe.
He turned around smiling, but maybe a little startled like heâd been caught. âNothing as interesting as talking to you.â His tone was dripping with the nonchalant charm that was ever present in his work persona.
And as entertaining as it was, as effective as you could see it being in other circumstances, there was a twinge of disappointment in your chest that he was wearing that mask with you. Still, you thanked him with a smile when he opened the car door for you and stayed patient through the surface level small talk and conversation about his successes at work. He was nervous, that much you could tell by the way his fingers were tapping restlessly against the steering wheel as he spoke. Thatâs why you did your best to be understanding, to have patience with the personality he wore like a security blanket. But by the time you pulled up to the restaurant, Keigo looked just as miserable as you were with the idea of walking into this packed building just to make a spectacle of yourselves.
âKeigo?â you called softly from the passenger seat. His tapping stopped, and he fully turned his head to face you despite still being in line for valet, eyes wide in a way that reminded you of a bird of prey trying to determine whether it needed to stand its ground or escape. You confessed, âI said yes to a date with you because I wanted to get to know you as Keigo, not because I wanted to be seen going on a date with Hawks.â
He blinked like he was processing surprising information and opened his mouth to respond, only to be cut off by a knock on his window.
Keigo turned and rolled it down, the valet bending slightly to announce, âIf you and your guest could please exit the vehicle and wait by the stand, weâll get you checked in and then youâre free to enjoy your evening.â
Your date turned back to look at you again and a moment passed of heavy eye contact before he turned back toward the valet. âActually, I think weâve changed our minds. Have a good night.â Before the other man could say anything, Keigo rolled up the window and began to pull the car away.
âKeigo, what are you-â
âWeâre going somewhere else. Itâs not far, I promise.â
It was a twenty minute drive away from the restaurant youâd previously been in front of, on a small, tucked away street that Keigo parked in a small lot next to an alleyway. His car looked out of place, much nicer than those that now surrounded it, but he seemed entirely unbothered. Whether that was due to his indifference toward the car, or because of his perceived safety of the thing, you werenât sure. Still, when he exited, Keigo rushed to your side and opened your door for you, offering a hand to help you from the car.
âOkay, second try, but youâre gonna have to trust me for a minute, okay?â And he still looked nervous, but he was speaking in earnest now instead of trying to hide it all behind a performance. He looked like a person again, rather than an action figure with a pull-string of publicist approved statements.
It was because of that turnaround in him that you agreed with a nod, âOkay.â
Almost instantly you understood his reason for asking for your trust; he began pulling you toward the alleyway with your hand still clutched in his. About halfway down, he stopped at an unmarked door and knocked three times. There was a pause of near silence in which Keigo squeezed your hand a little before the door was opened by a severe looking man in a red-stained apron. The man made no attempt to speak, only looking Keigo and then you over before pulling the door open further and stepping aside. Your confusion aside, this seemed to be routine for your date, who just waltzed right in, pulling you after him.
The door closed with a heavy thud and the man turned to face the two of you, stern for only a moment longer before his entire demeanor changed. An enormous smile broke across the manâs face and he greeted, âMr. Takami! So good to see you again! And now with such lovely company, you truly are a blessing to this place. Are you dining in this evening?â
Keigo released your hand to reach for the other manâs when it was offered, the pair shaking hands like old friends saying hello as Keigo responded, âWeâd love to sit at my usual table, please, Mr. Takeda. Thank you.â
The man, Mr. Takeda, lead the two of you through the incredible smelling kitchen toward what you could only assume was the employee area. Just outside the door with the âemployees onlyâ sign, there was a small table, a little cramped for two people, but you could imagine it being perfect for sitting here solo.
âYour usual for you?â Mr. Takeda asked, still smiling ear to ear.
âTwo, please, yeah," Keigo requested as he pulled out a chair for you.
âAnd for drinks?â
The two of you finished placing your order and as Mr. Takeda began to walk away, you turned to Keigo. âAre you going to tell me what they serve here?â
A small smile broke over his features, almost bashful in nature when he answered, âItâs my favorite fried chicken. I come here every week, sometimes more if itâs been a rough day and I canât make myself cook.â
You nodded as you took in the information, then, âAnd youâre in here enough that he knows you by name and has a table set aside specifically for you?â
âWell, the table is back here so that they donât get swamped with people who donât even want to order anything,â he defended. But he added at the end, âLook, I know itâs kind of pathetic to come to one place that much, but I-â
âNo, Keigo,â you were quick to interrupt. âI actually think itâs really sweet. You clearly have a good relationship with the man, and itâs a local place, right? Not a chain or anything?â You waited until after heâd shook his head to continue, âThen Iâm sure he really appreciates your business.â
âOh, I do!â announced Mr. Takeda as he returned with your drinks. âMr. Takami is my best customer! This is the first time heâs brought a guest with him, though.â
âOh?â you questioned, the amusement in your voice audible as you watched a blush bloom over Keigoâs cheeks while he avoided your gaze. Heâd been doing his best to make this not feel like a big deal, but it was clear to you that this was a place of comfort for him. The owner called Keigo by his name, he had a table specifically for him, away from prying eyes, and he was welcomed through the back door to afford him as much privacy as possible. This little family owned business was a safe haven for Keigo, and heâd let you in despite all the risks that could have come with. âThat makes me feel pretty special.â
Keigoâs eyes snapped up to meet yours, then, almost hopeful, and his smile slowly morphed to match your own. âYeah?â
You couldnât help the little chuckle in your response. âYeah.â
Quickly after that, Keigoâs more confident and playful side resurfaced, but it wasnât the version of it he wore as a mask. Instead, it was sourced in his comfort and enjoyment of the evening, and the Keigo youâd spent hours just talking to in your apartment weeks ago was back. The pair of you spent the next two hours sharing stories and laughing between bites of incredible chicken.
After youâd finished eating, Keigo continued to open every door for you, still smiling ear to ear, just like you. The drive to your place was shorter than you wanted it to be, the desire to spend more time with him still unsatisfied, but given how well the evening had gone, you were sure youâd have the opportunity.
âI had a really good time tonight,â you told him while the two of you stood on the step just in front of your door.
The sentiment seemed to give him a new rush of happiness, and the enormous cheesy smile on his face warmed your heart. It dropped slightly though, when a bout of bashfulness took back over. âSo, listen, Iâd love to take you out again some time. Maybe we could go to your favorite place? Or I could take you flying if the idea doesnât freak you out?â
âOr we could get takeout from my favorite place and then you could fly us somewhere to eat it like a picnic?â you offered, and that smile of his came back.
âYeah, thatâd be perfect.â You didnât miss the way his gaze drifted down to your lips only briefly before he resumed eye contact. âIâll text you once Iâm home and we can get it figured out.â
âOkay,â you said with a little nod and a smile.
Keigo stood before you like he was happy to simply bask in your presence, like he didnât really want to leave, but eventually, for the sake of both your sleep schedules, he did have to get going. âI hope you have a good night, and Iâll see you soon.â
âYou too, Iâm looking forward to it.â
He nodded silently like he was taking your words to heart, then turned to leave. He only made it a single step before you decided you couldnât let him go without one last thing.
âHey, Keigo?â
âYeah?â He whipped around at your call, only for you to catch his wrist and pull.
He barely caught himself with a hand on the doorframe to regain his balance as your lips connected with his. Keigo relaxed into it instantly, hands moving to cradle your face and wings fluffing up with a barely audible woosh as he leaned into you with a hum.
When you let the kiss break, you whispered, still close enough that he felt your breath against his lips, âThank you for opening up to me.â
He chuckled slightly, then, âThank you for making sure I knew I could.â He pressed another kiss to your lips, chaste but lingering. âGoodnight,â he said so softly it felt like a secret.
âGoodnight.â
He pressed another short kiss to your lips, then one to your cheek before he pulled away from your personal space and your doorstep. You stayed in the doorway until he was in the car and driving away. You went to sleep that night still smiling.
