JAMES WORPEL - HAWTHORN HAWKS
Q. Do football players consume a lot of protein powder shakes to keep them in shape 💪🏻? . . A. Not necessarily 👟🏉. . . Since posting about what an AFL football player eats the other month, I’ve had a lot of questions about the use of protein powders with football players. ❓Do they? ❔Don’t they? . . According @simone_austin (Sports Dietitian at Hawthorn FC), protein powder shakes aren’t an essential priority for her players when it comes to muscle building and recovery 🦵🏻💪🏻. Using a range of ingredients mixed up in a smoothie is a more effective way of refuelling key nutrients after a training session compared to just a protein shake. Whey protein is a commonly use protein powder source, but it is limited to giving you protein and very little else. . . For optimum recovery you need a range of nutrients such as electrolytes, carbohydrates, fats, antioxidants as well as protein in your shake. . . Below Simone and I have have put together a chocolate banana smoothie recipe, which gives you an example of the ingredients her football players use in their smoothies 😋🥛. . . 1) 250ml of low fat milk. 2) 1 tbsp of milk powder. 3) 100g of low fat yogurt. 4) 1 frozen banana. 5) 25g of oats. 6) 10g of nut butter. 7) 3 tsp of cacao powder. . . #afl #hawthornfc #proteinpowder (at Patterson Lakes, Victoria) https://www.instagram.com/p/B5SB_MWl52K/?igshid=1wvzo6zixrknd

A big thanks to @simone_austin for collaborating on this post & sharing her expert sports nutrition knowledge on AFL football 🙌🏻. The idea behind this post is to inspire younger minds to eat healthier by following their sporting role models 🏈. Research has shown that children tend to copy experts when trying to achieve a instrumental goal (Burdett E.R.R, et al. (2016) An AFL football player requires a healthy balanced diet to get the best out of their bodies during training 🏈 . But they also can be seen as important role models by younger generations. Simone describes her football players’ diets as balanced and in tune with what their muscles need to perform. ⚡️They consume complex carbohydrates throughout the day to provide sustainable glycogen stores (muscle fuel). 💪🏻 Protein is introduced pre and post training to help with muscle growth and recovery. She also emphasises veggies and fruits as repairing foods due to their good levels of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants 🍎🥦🥕. These should be consumed throughout the day. Most children won’t need a 2nd lunch every day like a football player 🧒🏼👦🏽, but the principles of the eating plan could inspire them to cut down on junk food and start preparing and eating healthier foods. If you have enjoyed this post, please share to inspire younger generations. #healthyeating #afl #hawthornfc (at Melbourne, Victoria, Australia) https://www.instagram.com/p/B2C3j5aFBu1/?igshid=t7iydwvowu8h
