Yup, Melville and Hawthorne actually lived together for a while. They exchanged letters, many of those sent to Melville having survived but the ones Hawthorne received were said to be burnt. This is an actual academic theory with actual evidence. Though never said it is very clear that Melville did not have heteronormative thoughts/writing is indeed very homo.
