I See You || Gale & Peeta
She volunteered, and a new chapter in his life was set to begin.
Words that left her girlish voice so passionately resonated in his ears and swam their way to his chest, leaving a little boy of barely seven years old starstruck and bewildered. He'd watch, in awe, as she stood there amongst them all, but sang alone without a care in the world. Without fright, without a speck of nerves did she sing -- and oh, how he was filled with fright and nerves enough for the two of them just spectating.
( "You see that girl, son...?" his father would say, "That girl is something special." )
More than special, he would later think -- but for now, she was all-consuming in the sense that a flighty attention span common of a younger boy was suddenly stubbornly focused. Interested in not an activity he could busy himself with, all alone -- but interested in another person. A girl.
And her name is Katniss Everdeen.
The Valley Song ended, and the beginnings of a wildfire were stirring in his chest. An ember that wouldn't extinguish the moment silence washed over them, seconds later, nor after people had started talking. Peeta gasped, hardly aware that he was holding his breath, and grinned with his mouth agape because wow! she was cool! He wanted so badly to run up to her -- to tell her that she was amazing at singing. Something more than how pretty her hair looked, braided to the side that way (something he hadn't noticed at all before now). Something that sounds like --
'Wow! That was incredible! Can you sing more?'
-- but would never be said. The split face grew lax, and his jaw dropped as something unfamiliar wells in his chest. It doesn't feel as good, not at all, and he wondered for a moment whether he had died or if this was what dying felt like. Any compulsion to compliment her -- not the idea to, for he so wanted to tell her she sounded lovely! -- was c r u s h e d.
Because she started talking to him.
"This place is like a prison. At least in District 12, we were allowed to go outside."

Without looking where he was going, Peeta bumped right into Gale, clipping his shoulder. "Oh, oh -- Gale. I'm sorry. I wasn't----" Wasn't watching where he was going enough to run right into the other male under a mistletoe. Shit. He stood there, surprised. Blue eyes met the other's and his brows lifted just slightly, then his eyes rose to the green.. to signal the other boy to also look up.
