Wild Beasts - Present Tense @wildbeastsband @dominorecordco #wildbeasts #haydenthorpe Please raise your hand if you’re also in love with Hayden Thorpe’s voice (I guess you could also click like, etc.). He’s the grand champion of the “how does that voice come out of this person” contest and it’s nearly impossible to compare it to just about anyone else. It’s huge, its rich, and it sounds like it could be singing gospel jams as easily as it sings synth-laden dream pop. He also did a completely breathtaking cut of Q Lazzarus’ famous Goodbye Horses with @mrjonhopkins that is haunting and incredible (please check it out if you haven’t already!). I digress, Present Tense is arguably the best thing Wild Beasts put out (I’ll accept Two Dancers, but not Boy King as a rebuttal), and it’s the last album they released that held onto the dreamy and pretty style they became known for when they signed with @dominorecordco and before the much harsher and crunchier sound of Boy King. This is one of those albums where the first four tracks are so good and catchy that i’ve never really been able to just jump around from track to track, I ALWAYS listen to it in order whether it be on vinyl or streaming. There’s something obviously dancey about the rhythm section on many of the tracks on this album, but it’s definitely not a dance album in and of itself. It’s got lots of vocal layering and ethereal guitar work that sits on top of the beats and makes you think of a lot of the bands that cut their teeth at SXSW showcases back in the mid 2010’s.
