╰┈➤Fluff: Established Relationship-Haley (Stardew Valley) | Feminine Reader
[WC:2,933]
The farm door at the front of your house squeaked shut behind you, a loud problem that you'd have to fix on the weekend. Winter was quickly approaching, which in return meant that the demand for stocked firewood, covering the crops, and planting some more in the greenhouse to preserve them was intense. All of that work was not to mention the excessive care that the animals needed – heaters, repairing a few of the cracks in the worn-down walls, and ensuring that the silo and auto feeders were working properly, along with having enough hay to last the entire season.
You wiped your boots at the entrance mat, the miniscule movement of looking downwards towards your feet caused a sharp pain to echo through your neck and down your spine. This preparation was wearing you down worse than ever. You don’t remember the other years being quite so hard. Be it the expansion of your farm over time, or simply the fact that you were just getting older, the reason didn't matter. Your body was on fire.
“Dear?” A chipper, lighthearted voice called out from the kitchen, and instantly, your mind tuned out the pain and zeroed in on your wife.
“Hi there, sweetheart.” You padded through the short halls until you wound up in the kitchen, the slight wobble to each of your steps wounded your pride just a little. Pushing that to the back of your mind, you felt your stomach ignite in thousands of flustered butterflies at the view in front of you. Haley in a baby yellow sundress, her wavy, golden hair lying across her back. She looked beautiful.
Your voice, however, must have conveyed your exhaustion more so than you could've thought. The second your sentence finished, Haley spun on her sock-covered feet, away from the sink – in which she was previously washing vegetables for dinner – and instead facing you directly; her big, blue eyes squinted in a concerned attitude.
“Hmm..” She studied you, you felt yourself shrink under her analyzing gaze. “Work too hard again?”
“Well I-”
Haley held up her index finger, effectively silencing your argument. When you surrendered, mouth closing in defeat, she brought her hand to her face, utilizing her fingers to pinch the bridge of her nose. A sigh followed.
“You work too hard!” She mumbled and shook her head. You furrowed your brows. After today, you really didn't want to be scolded. Though you knew better than to not expect this from your dear wife, as after all, Haley charmed you with her fiery attitude in the first place. Regardless, you weren't feeling it right now. You wanted to curl up in bed, preferably in her arms, and sleep for the next 24 hours.
Although, much to your surprise, she didn’t begin a sassy lecture. Rather, she approached you in a few steps, her arms slipping around your shoulders as her hands gently scratched the baby hairs at the nape of your neck.
“I know this time of year is stressful, and admittedly, I don't thank you enough for your hard work…” Her face softened, “...but this is too much. You're exhausted every evening when you get back, and sometimes you're not even home until well after midnight!”
You felt a pang of guilt at her concern. You didn’t realize how tense your shoulders were until they sank down, your body subconsciously melting into her arms. You murmured a quiet apology; simple but honest. Haley pursed her lips in response. She accepted it, of course, she could never stay mad at you for long at all. But she still wasn’t necessarily pleased with this situation, either. Your health was clearly deteriorating, and she couldn’t just watch that happen.
She leaned closer, her nose nuzzling yours as the scent of her coconut lotion dazed you. Your eyes lazily closed, you huffed in comfort.
“Let me help.” She whispered, to which you immediately furrowed your brows.
“You already help me enough by keeping up with the housework.”
Haley arched an unamused brow. You both knew that was a lousy excuse, and that in fact, you just didn't want her to do any labor. Her house “work” consisted of cooking and cleaning, two tasks that didn't take up even half of her day. Sure, she had her photography business, in which she took photos to help promote the farm's goods to bigger cities, but that was also easy enough.
“Come on..” She pleaded while offering her best pout – the specific one that turned you into pure putty without fail. “Just for the weekend! You can rest, and I'll handle everything else.”
You regretted opening your eyes the minute that her puppy face rendered into focus. You groaned, in no way did you like the sound of Haley working long hours in the autumn sun; moving wood, moving the animals, covering the trees and the crops and-
But…the idea of actually resting was more than appealing, and your body was practically begging you to say yes.
“You promise you'll be fine?” Your hands scratched down her back, occasionally stopping to massage her hips. The fabric of her dress was soothing to your calloused fingertips. The luxuries that made up who Haley was were a reminder of the different ways you both lived. Since your wedding, you had insisted she do nothing that included physical labor. If she simply promoted the farm and handled the mundane tasks, then you swore to pay for anything that she wanted. Weekly nails, shopping trips, you covered all of it. It was no big deal with how successful your products consistently sell, and you didn't mind spoiling her. Now, the idea of Haley stepping into your way of life was as humorous as it was worrying.
“I'll be fine!” With a quick kiss to your lips, she released her embrace and spun back around, quickly returning to the sink to resume washing the vegetables.
“Go shower, and then you can eat, and then it's bed!”
You couldn't help but smile at her motherly smothers. Not that you'd ever admit it, but it was a nice feeling whenever she took on such a nurturing role. Nevertheless, you were fast to obey, maneuvering your way upstairs to shower.
Ever so true to her words, you were practically forced into the bed as soon as she declared you had digested your food enough to lie down. Being too tired to argue, though you completely wanted to, as soon as your body met the sheets you were passed out.
You didn't even remember falling asleep, so maybe you were more drained than you let yourself think.
Then came the morning, early enough for the sun to just now start to peak over the horizon, indicating the time you'd usually be awake. However, you stayed cuddled under the baby pink duvet – a purchase insisted on by your wife – as Haley managed to roll herself out of bed, only slightly swearing on her way. When was the last time she had been awake this early? It must've been when she was back in school. Regardless, she completed her very tedious morning routine, tamed her waves in a tight ponytail, and spent little time on a simple breakfast that would carry her through until lunch. After that, she was out the door.
In all honesty, she was slightly intimidated. Where do you even start?
After a few minutes of serious contemplation between the crops or the animals, she decided on the livestock as first priority.
Her boots, which were actually your boots, because never would she dare buy an item so atrocious, carried her across the dirt and grass until she reached the coop's big doors. Upon opening them, Haley was greeted with very judgmental stares coming from the still sleepy chickens. Doing her best to not feel self-conscious, she started with carefully picking all of the eggs, sorting them into their own bundles depending on their size and color. She knew you had a specific routine of which ones you sold as normal and which ones were forged into different products.
When that was done, she moved hay from the connected silo into the auto-feeders. Haley was thankful that you already had the feeders and heaters set up, as if she had to do anything electrical, she wasn't sure she wouldn't burn the entire property down. With a few caring rubs on the chicken's feathers, and a couple of them returning the act of love by nipping at her shoes, Haley moved onto the barn.
The following process was the same. Refill the food, spend some time milking the cows…begrudgingly, and ensure that there was a fair share of loving pets and snuggles between the pigs, sheep and cows. Nothing too hard, and at this point, Haley was starting to wonder why you wouldn't let her take care of the animals in the morning. Maybe this could be a new portion added to her routine? Surely it'd take some weight from your shoulders.
Moving on, the hard part was awaiting her in the fields. Who knew having to insulate rows and rows and rows of seeds with mulch was so mind-numbing and back-breaking. The worst part was, she still had to cover them all with tarps!
“Goddamn..” She stood up straight, twisting her upper body in a desperate attempt to crack her back. She didn't even know what time it was by now, but the sun was getting hotter, which meant it must be somewhere in the afternoon. Had she already been at this for hours? No wonder you were always so tired. She made a mental note to give you a special thanks for all of your hard work later, that is, assuming she could still move properly. Haley resumed back to sitting on her knees, leaning over the baby pumpkins doing their best to grow, and working her hands to drive the multch into their roots. Her hands and arms were brown from the process, her face bright red, hair sweaty and damp around her forehead, but she pressed on.
In the house, you were shockingly just now starting to stir awake. Your head felt heavy, throat dry as a cotton ball, and for a moment, you really had no clue where you were. When reality started to come back, you rubbed your eyes and glanced at the clock on your nightstand, the same one you swore you had set an alarm on.
1:34 PM
Your lips thinned as your eyes bulged from your skull. How did you sleep so long??? Why didn't you wake up? You knew Haley was stubborn to get her way, but you really didn't expect she'd sneakily turn off your alarm in the night.
Throwing the duvet off of your oddly hot body, you all but gracefully got out of bed. It was as if your own legs stopped working overnight.
On your way to the bathroom to freshen up for the day, you stopped by the large, ajar window that brought fresh air into the bedroom. You always loved the natural light it brought in, and the scent of nature that came with it. It took Haley a few months of your marriage to get used to it, but even she can't sleep without it open now.
You peeked past the curtains to see the distant fields of your farm. The view had a little bit of everything, the corners of the barn and coop, the sheds, the crops – and right in the middle, Haley.
You instantly smiled and rested your elbows on the windowsill. There she sat, her arms and hands working tirelessly as she tended the pumpkins. Admittedly, you didn't even know Haley knew all of the steps the vegetables required before winter. Maybe her consistent watching of you from her comfortable chair on the porch actually did pay off in her favor.
“Hi, farmer.” You called out in a slurry tone, your voice still thick with the deep sleep you were in.
You heard her squeak at the same time that you saw her shoulders jump. Haley lifted her head towards the house, her ponytail flailing to fall over her shoulder. She gave you a tired toothy grin, “Don't go stealing my lines now, sweetheart.”
You tilted your head, perfectly content to just watch her work. You felt a warmth bloom beneath your skin, hotter than the temperature outside, yet soothing. She looked a mess – dirty, sweaty, dressed in your older, yellow pair of overalls – she was everything that was once so abnormal to her. You loved seeing her expensive manicures, her pearly jewelry, and how soft her hair always felt after her monthly re-do at the salon in the next town over, but you also loved the version of her you were currently looking at.
“Sleep well?” Her voice broke you out of your reflective daydreaming. Her head was tilted back down, her hands intensely fighting with a particularly stubborn stem that didn't want to bend out of her way. “You were snoring when I left.”
“Like a baby.” You hummed, “When did you leave?”
She shrugged her shoulders, “About 6:30.”
“You've been out here ever since?”
She looked up at you and smiled proudly, “Yup!”
You couldn't help but laugh at her enthusiastic state. You were just about ready to jump from the window and smother her cheeks in kisses. Resisting your tempting thoughts, you stood straighter, your hands now falling limp to your side.
“That…impressive, actually.” You murmured more to yourself than her, “Good job, Haley. I appreciate this.”
She immediately ducked her head back down to hide her blush, not that you'd be able to tell, anyway. Her entire face was matching the tomatoes growing in the rows behind her.
“Anything for you.”
Though it pained you to leave the window, you were going insane at the feeling of your messy bed hair and unbrushed teeth. You blew a kiss and promised a lemonade before disappearing behind the curtains.
Shortly after, you met her outside in a pair of sweatpants and a tank top, one hand pinching two glasses between your fingers, the other hand was clasped on the handle of the lemonade pitcher.
Haley was standing up when you approached her, though she had her back turned to you, instead facing the small cart of supplies she brought with her. It seemed she was done with the mulch and now working to untangle the protective tarp.
“I can help you with that.” You offered before placing a small kiss to her dirt-covered cheek from over her shoulder.
Haley hummed, her eyes fluttering shut when she felt your body behind her, the lemonade pitcher briefly swiping her arm made her shiver from its cool temperature.
“I might accept that, actually. I don't want to even imagine having to unfold this by myself. It's at least a hundred feet!”
“It's…25 feet, but close enough.” You teased, reaching your arm to her front so that she could grab one of the glasses from your hands. Haley spun around to face you and graciously accepted the lemonade that you poured for her. Much to your amusement, she gulped the entire first glass down in one go, only a few droplets spilling from the corner of her mouth and down her chin. You poured another serving when she held her glass out again, indicating she wanted more.
“Fed..the animals.” She gasped after her sips, her chest heaving much like a little kid who was getting too heat-exhausted. “And milked the cows…without getting kicked!”
You watched in awe as you listened to her stories. She did a lot.
“I haven't gotten to the greenhouse yet, figured I'd do that after all this.” She gestured to the rows of crops with one of her hands before settling it on her hip. You laughed at how perfectly she fit the role of a farmer. You placed the lemonade pitcher on the supply cart, now effectively freeing one of your hands.
“You've done perfect.” You praised, lifting a hand to cradle one of her cheeks, your thumb swiping the dirt stain away. Haley leaned into your touch, nuzzling her face against your palm, and even planting a kiss to it.
“Before dinner I'll get some firewood, I just haven't been able to find your axe.” She pouted.
Your eyes widened, you almost dropped your own glass of lemonade.
“No, no no…I'll cut the wood.”
“But you're supposed to be resting-”
“I'll cut the wood.” You repeated as you leaned closer to whisper against her lips, “You can do everything else, but you are never allowed to handle an axe.”
She gasped in faux offense, though she couldn't help but lean closer to your lips. So close to touching, yet teasingly just far enough away.
“Whatever.” She spoke, her free hand snaking its way to your waist, wrapping around it to pull you the perfect amount closer. Her lips tasted of salt, but the tang from the lemonade lingered on her tongue. You melted against her warmth, the world narrowing down to only where the both of you stood.
“Whatever.” You mocked her against her lips before pressing yourself back into her mouth. Your body felt lighter, your mind most definitely clearer from the amount of sleep you had finally gotten. Maybe an extra set of hands wouldn't be so bad, that is, if she continued to offer her help. You were fine with whatever, so long as Haley kept as far away from a sharp object and a tree as possible.
