Book Review: What If It’s Us (by:  Adam Silvera & Becky Albertalli)

Overview

This is a YA novel about a summer love between Ben and Arthur. Arthur is in New York for the summer because of his moms work, but plans to make the most of it. Ben lives in New York but is spending the summer in summer school with his ex boyfriend. They meet at the post office while Ben is trying to get rid of a box of memories from his past relationship, despite this they both seem to hit it off until a flash mob separates them both. Will the universe reunite them or will all the have is memories from the post office? 

~This is spoiler free. I do talk about general sections of the book, but I do not spoiler anything specific.~

The book is divided into three parts and an epilogue though. 

Part One: introducing the characters and having Ben and Arthur meet. This is also the section that deals with the aftermath of the post office and the whole reconnecting. 

Part Two: Ben and Arthur getting together and seeing their romance bloom!

Part Three: more romance and the ending of the summer approaching and how they will handle that. 

Epilogue: What happens after a year after the book when they are all starting freshman year if college.

Is it a series?

Nope! (but is was only released in October 2018 sooo...)

Review (I will be reviewing this section by section)

Part One: So this was the slowest part of the book because it was just introducing the characters and setting up for the rest of the story. Personally, it took me a little bit to get used to the writing style since I am used to reading more school required type reading (which is written very differently lol). It also is very like up front with telling you stuff; it is like the characters are speaking to you (the reader) at times to tell you information that is relevant instead of writing it within the book to have you find out. It did not bother me too much, but it took some time to get used to and after the first few chapters it isn’t written in that style anymore. 

Part Two/Three: This is when Ben and Arthur actually talk and become a couple. It is a very fluffy couple and it is nice to read! It is cute to read about how this is Arthurs first relationship and the excitement, but they even that out with showing Bens insecurities about being in a relationship. I really love the part when Arthur and Ben swap interests: so Arthur reads Bens book that he is writing and Ben listens to Hamilton. Throughout the rest of the book they both make references to these two specific interests of theirs and I personally love it. I think it shows how much they care for each other and how they swapped parts of themselves from each other. 

Epilogue: So it is pretty short but it is nice. It leaves the book off with an open kind of ending; it leaves the option for a sequel but I honestly cannot see where they would go with another book. But if they released another one I wouldn't oppose to reading it....

This is my first submission for DeadBoyWeen 2024 and the first story I've written in over 5 years. Something about this show and this fandom made me want to create things again and nudged me out of the creative slump I've been in since I finished uni. So this fic feels pretty special ♥️

When I actually sat down and thought about it I realised that these two desperately needed some comfort after this ep ♥️

So I have gone through two seven week semesters and have taken 5 classes (technically 6 since my biology 101 lecture and lab are two separate classes). I thought I would just share what I've gotten out of these classes.

1. You will have instructors you do not like and will have to deal with. 

So for my second semester I took English 102 and I did not like the instructor (or the class). She was condescending at times and it felt like she was trying very hard to seem above us, especially since she just got out of her masters program so she's young too. It sucks having to put up with it, but you will have to. For me, I was able to get through the class because I always was like “one more class period down”. 

2. Going off the one before, do not make it worse for yourself either.

I definitely made it worse for myself the first part of the semester for English 102. I spent half the semester just dreading and complaining about going to class, instead of trying to stay positive about it. It is okay to dread /complain about class every once in a while, it is good to get stuff off your chest, but doing it all the time will just make it harder to get through the class.

3. Pick and choose who you complain to 

This may sound weird, but hear me out. My friend had the same English instructor as me last semester for English 101, so she understood what I was going through but it made it worse. I would complain about my instructor to her and she would just hype up that negatively. It got to the point to where anytime I mentioned the class, I would be met with a negative respond; I would even start to ld contradict the negative comments she would say because it was making it harder on myself. I went to someone I knew was actively negative and who I subconsciously knew would hype up my anger towards this class, instead of just listen to me complain and help me deal with it. Do not go to people like this! It will just make the semester harder to get  feel more and make yourself more negative in general. Make sure whoever you go to will not hype your anger/negativeness, they will let you rant then help make it better, not worse. 

4. On another hand, you will have classes you hate, but instructors you love! 

I was not a fan of American Government; the class itself was not bad, but it was half online and half in class. So in class, we would discuss the chapters and news, but all our quizzes and tests were out of class, and we had to teach ourselves everything. I was not a fan of that method cause the textbook was boring and bad at explaining stuff. On another note we got multiple tries for a quiz/test and the deadline for them all was the last day of class, so we had the option to go in and ask questions, then take it. 

5. You will have to read the textbook for classes

This was the only way to do my American Government class. It is a struggle to read a textbook, and I always wanted to just push it off-do NOT do that! I once pushed it off and had to read two chapter before class and it was horrible! It took up so much time and I was miserable. Take it in chunks and force yourself to do it, you will thank yourself later. Also find out what works for you when reading; is it splitting up the chapter itself and taking a break  in the middle of it? Is it making notes and post marking stuff? Is it reading out loud? Just find what makes reading it easier for you.

6. Some classes you won’t have to read the textbook for, but remember it is still a resource you can use! 

For my psychology class, my instructor flat out told us she would never make us read from the book and you do not even have to get it. I was already supplied it by my school so I already had it at that point, and it came in handy. Even though we did not have to read it, it was great if I needed examples to help understand or just wanted a different definition than google/one from class. If you have it, use it if needed, it does not just have to collect dust. 

6.5. That being said, you do not need to get the textbook either. 

Whether you cannot afford it or just do not want another textbook lying around, you do not have to get the textbook if the instructor states you won’t need it. There are plenty of free sources online to help with understanding what happened in class! I just know for me, I was already supplied the textbook through my program---but there is no pressure to get a textbook if it is unneeded. 

7. Stay on top of your work

 It is okay to procrastinate sometimes, take a break for yourself, but do not use this as an excuse to keep putting stuff off. Especially at the end of the semester/year when the exams start coming and projects start to pile up, make sure to plan ahead and stay on top of your work.
