It’s important for your safety for you to be in the moment. If you’re taking a route you’re familiar with, it’s easy to become complacent about safety, you may take risks or give in to distractions, not focusing on the road and your immediate surroundings. It’s just as important for pedestrians, as it is for those behind the wheel. It’s important to be in the moment for you to make safe judgement and decisions on crossing the road at a safe time. Foot traffic in a workplace with heavy machinery and equipment needs to be controlled just as it is for pedestrians in the street. Staff should feel safe, which will allow more focus on their job, making your business more efficient, and in turn, happier and healthier staff.
The NSW Government Centre for Road Safety suggests these tips for pedestrians:
Before you cross the road:
Look before you cross. Just because someone else decides to cross, doesn’t mean it’s safe for you
Unplug your earphones and put away your phone
Never assume that an approaching vehicle can see you, or will stop for you – wait until all vehicles have stopped before you step off the kerb
Avoid crossing between parked cars or at the front or back of buses and large vehicles
At intersections, check for turning vehicles before you leave the kerb, and while you are crossing the road
Wear bright, light coloured clothing at night or in reduced visibility conditions.
Always use pedestrian crossings
Wait for the walk signal. Pedestrian countdown timers show how many seconds you have left to finish crossing before oncoming vehicles will be given a green light. If you haven’t started to cross, the countdown timers can help you decide if it’s safe to do so
At traffic lights, don’t enter the road if vehicles are moving through the crossing or if the red don’t walk signal shows.
More than 1500 pedestrians are hit on NSW roads each year. As at 2 March, there have been 19 Australian workers killed at work in 2018. In 2017, the preliminary data show there were 180 Australian workers killed at work, compared with 182 workers in 2016. You should always feel safe at work, and employers should always be on the search for safety features they can introduce into their business that will enhance the safety and wellbeing of workers.
