Who invented the first long-lasting lipstick?
Hazel Bishop (1906-1998) was a chemist and inventor who revolutionized the cosmetics industry with her groundbreaking creation. Bishop worked as a research assistant at Columbia University, where she focused on developing a long-lasting lipstick formula. At the time, most lipsticks were made using natural dyes and oils, which resulted in a product that easily smudged, faded, and required frequent reapplication. Bishop saw an opportunity to improve this and set out to create a lipstick that would stay put for hours.
In 1949, after years of research and experimentation, Bishop finally achieved her breakthrough. She developed a formula that combined pigments, oils, and waxes, resulting in a lipstick that adhered to the lips and resisted smudging and fading. Bishop's invention was not only long-lasting but also had a matte finish, which was a significant departure from the glossy lipsticks popular at the time.
With her revolutionary lipstick formula in hand, Bishop founded Hazel Bishop, Inc. in 1950, a cosmetics company dedicated to producing her long-lasting lipstick. She introduced her product to the market under the brand name "No-Smear Lipstick," which quickly gained popularity among women who were tired of constantly reapplying their lipstick throughout the day.
