Al Ulbrickson bein' a little cutie actually smiling.
Posting an old edit I made for my friend
Al and Hazel Ulbrickson had a son named Alvin Edmund Ulbrickson Jr. Born in 1930, Al Jr. would have been six at the time the movie takes place and now I'm just imagining him always wanting to spend time at the shell house because he definitely looks up to those boys.
Also, Ulbrickson totally has fatherly instincts regarding his oarsmen because they're like his kids too. He doesn't want to see any of them hurt physically or mentally like he literally went door to door trying to settle their nerves before races in Poughkeepsie and the Olympic Trials. And I'll bet either he or Bolles has to be Bobby's medical proxy while they're traveling so much, too.
Al Ulbrickson Jr was born on October 10, 1930, making him only five years old during the events of the 1936 season. That’s the same age Bobby Moch had been when he was nearly killed during an operation on his appendix.
Imagine Bobby’s reaction to hearing that Al Jr. ended up in the hospital, even though it’s for a tonsillectomy or some other super routine procedure with no complications. I’m sure Bobby understands the surgery is necessary and that there’s much less risk involved, but he’d hate to see any kid in the hospital regardless because of his own experiences.
Maybe Al Jr is nervous before his surgery and Bobby offers to reassure him that everything will be okay, even telling the kid that he’d had a surgery when he was the exact same age and he’s all better now. Of course he leaves out the part where the doctor messed up and he was left with life-long consequences. Maybe Bobby goes out of his way to visit the kid, dropping off some things that helped him when he’d had his long stint in the hospital. For Al Jr he brings a toy or something to keep him occupied, but maybe Bobby gives some tips to Al and Hazel as well. After asking his own parents, he might be able to give them a list of foods that will be easy for him keep down if he gets nauseous and suggestions as to what to keep an eye out for post-surgery (ie signs of difficulty breathing, negative reactions to the anesthesia, signs of dehydration, etc).
