I’m writing as a Missouri resident and homeowner who strongly supports the right to keep a small number of backyard hens. The recent Cole County ruling overturning HB 2062 has created confusion, frustration and uncertainty for families across the state, especially those of us living in communities where this law finally brought a little common sense balance between HOAs and homeowners.
I’m respectfully asking you to support an appeal of the ruling in Four Seasons Lakesites v. State of Missouri, so the law can continue to stand while the courts fully review the decision.
Families shouldn’t lose their rights because one bill was struck down on a procedural technicality. HB 2062 protected reasonable, responsible backyard hen ownership, not roosters, not large flocks, not anything disruptive. Just the ability for Missouri families to keep up to six hens on their own property for eggs, sustainability and food security.
Backyard hens are quieter than most dogs, cause fewer complaints than loud lawn equipment and offer real benefits to households and communities. Many Missouri cities already allow hens without issue. This law helped provide consistency and fairness statewide.
I’m asking for your help to ensure:
• The State moves forward with an official appeal,
• Missouri families don’t lose a right we were just finally granted and
• A clean, single subject version of the bill is prepared if needed in the next session.
