Hey Anya! I’ve been reading some of your stuff and I genuinely love everything you write
I’ve been seeing a lot of Haikyuu fics w girly/hyper fem or even bimbo reader and they’re great! But if it’s okay I’d like to request a sorta hurt/comfort or just fluff of a really introverted reader trying to be feminine because she never got into make up and dresses as a young teen/child so she’s kinda scared and feels weird about wanting try something like that as a third year already.
And maybe the reason she feels this way is because of all the gorgeous fan girls her s/o has and maybe throw in a bit of comments being thrown at/abt her and their relationship
I think this would work best with Oikawa or Atsumu
If this is too long or you just don’t want to do it of course you know that you don’t have to but if you do, thank you soooo much I love all of your work 💛

a/n: HI ANON!!! you're SO sweet omg TYSM!! 🥹🥹 i'd absolutely love to write this for u, and this is such a sweet idea. we definitely need more fics representing exactly this type of reader 🥲
AND WOAH WHAT ITS OIKAWA'S BIRTHDAY??? (i found out halfway through writing this fic) HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO MY GOAT AAAAAAA I LOVE HIM SOSOSO MUCH!!
warnings: insecurities, very petty bullying, gossiping, implications of low self confidence, lots of comfort though
summary: everyone has their own ideas about what you should be doing and who tooru oikawa should be dating, and it's starting to get to your head. luckily, tooru's there to remind you that regardless of whether you stay the same or try out something completely new, nothing could change how much he loves you.
no one ever said it out loud, but it was heavily implied by just about everyone around you that if one didn't master the art of fashion and makeup by high school, they were simply too late.
again, no one would ever say it to your face, but you knew they believed it. especially when it came to you and how you'd been trying to experiment with different styles recently.
you knew this because of the looks they'd given you the first time you'd worn a full face of makeup out. you knew this because of the not so subtle whispers they'd give when you walked by wearing a dress instead of your regular hoodie and jeans combination. and probably most painfully for you, you knew this because they brought your boyfriend into every insult about you.
"i can't believe tooru's dating someone like her."
"he could go for just about anyone, and he picked the girl who still can't do her makeup properly?"
"i'm not judging his taste or anything, but... no, i lied. i am."
"i'm all for different styles and whatever, but come on. some of her looks genuinely concern me. i wonder how tooru feels about all of that."
"i just wish she found her style when she was younger instead of embarrassing herself right now. poor tooru, honestly."
and the worst part was that you couldn't even deny any of them. couldn't stand up for yourself or tell yourself that they were wrong. because in your eyes, they weren't.
it was true, your boyfriend's fangirls were gorgeous. the type of girls who could pull off just about every outfit, look good no matter what hair style they wore or what makeup they tried, and had absolutely every right to question why you were dating someone as incredible as tooru.
not only that, but they were friendly and charismatic! the type who could approach anyone and carry on a conversation about anything.
in other words, the exact opposite of you. you didn't hate people, not at all, but you found it unnatural to be interacting constantly and to have to display such outgoing behavior when you didn't want to. it almost made you yourself wonder what tooru saw in you.
"hey, gorgeous," a familiar voice called out - teasing, warm, and familiar all at the same time. "what're you up to?"
tooru walked up behind you, planting a soft kiss onto the top of your head. you were in your room, seated in front of your mirror and vanity, makeup laid across the table.
"nothing much, just playing around with some makeup," you answered lightly, trying to hide whatever insecurities were plaguing your thoughts.
he hummed in response, taking a seat next to you on your stool. "d'you need help with anything? i could, you know, be your shade tester, try on some accessories, give my expert fashion advice... ooh, maybe even see how long your lipstick lasts?" he teased, raising his eyebrows playfully.
you'd laughed softly, gently swatting his hand away from you, even though you felt a slight sting in your heart as you thought about how a different girl, literally anyone else, wouldn't need help from him. they'd just be good enough for him without having to literally walk them through every step of looking and acting feminine. but yet here you were, a third year, who genuinely relied on the help that your boyfriend gave you. how pathetic was that?
as though tooru was hearing all of your internal monologue, he gently cupped your face with his hand, eyes softening as they met yours. "hey, everything alright?"
"oh, yeah! i've just... been wondering if you're fine with me trying and failing at so many new things these days," you said with a chuckle, trying to keep your voice light.
tooru's eyebrows furrowed slightly in confusion. "huh? what do you mean?"
"i mean, i've only just started trying out... all these new looks, you know. and it's not going so well, clearly," you joked, desperately hoping he'd take it lightly and forget about it. "so i'm sorry for, i don't know, maybe embarrassing you a little."
"y/n, what makes you think it's not going well? i thought you were enjoying all of it..?"
you chuckled nervously, searching for a way out of this conversation. see, you never told tooru about what others had said, and those same people made sure to never talk bad about you when your boyfriend could hear them. so really, he was in the dark about everything going on, which you felt bad about, but at the same time, you didn't want to bother him any more than you already were.
"i do! it's fun, i promise. but..." you trailed off, realizing there was no way to avoid the truth now. "...some people have been saying things. and honestly, they're right."
any trace of softness left tooru's eyes, but you knew the hardness there wasn't targeted towards you. he didn't press for details, instead just turning around, wrapping his arms around you, his warmth a comforting presence.
you felt your eyes tear up slightly as you fully relaxed against him.
"y/n, don't ever tell me that they were right. i don't even need to know what they were saying, but if it's making you smile a little less, laugh a little quieter, and hesitate from doing what you want, then i know enough," he murmured quietly, one hand gently stroking your hair. "i know that whatever they said, no matter how cruel, aren't true. and even if it means spending the rest of my life proving that to you, i'll do it."
"tooru..."
"no, please, gorgeous. listen to me," he urged, voice still soft but filled with such seriousness. "you've always been the most gorgeous person i've ever seen. not because of what you wear or how you look - though i promise both your fashion and looks are beautiful too - but because of who you are."
"but i'm embarrassing you, aren't i? you look, well, like you, and there's so many other gorgeous girls out there who are so much more-"
"i don't care about those other girls, i care about you," he interrupted, voice so unnaturally intense for just a moment before he breathed out a soft 'sorry'.
"i love you so much, y/n. and if anything, i'm glad that i'm getting to watch you get to start to express yourself now when i'm here to be right by your side through it all. as your makeup tester, fashion guide, boyfriend, and whatever else you could ever need me to be."
"so please don't think that a couple random people's utterly irrelevant comments could change my mind about you," he'd said once more, eyes scanning over your face to see how you were taking his whole speech. "...of course, at the end of the day, it's all your decision, and if you do want to stop with trying out this new stuff for whatever reason, i'll support you. but i hope that if you do so, it's not because of the lies that those idiots told you. just... do what you want to do, love."
you stayed silent for a moment, just letting his words sink in. finally, when you looked up, you smiled softly - just a small upturn of your lips, but this time, it reached your eyes. you didn't know how to thank him enough for everything, so instead, you just gently asked what you knew he'd be most eager to hear.
"...tooru, my dearest fashion consultant and boyfriend, would you be free to go dress shopping with me today?"
"YES, YES, A MILLION TIMES YES," he immediately replied, the relief in his eyes unmistakeable.
and for maybe the first time since you'd started trying to be a bit more feminine, you didn't regret starting at what most considered a late time. because with tooru right by your side, fully invested in every dress, every makeup palette, and every tiny thing that you were interested in, you couldn't help but think that you wouldn't have ever chosen being a little 'earlier' over this.
i got a little carried away with this one it was so fun to write waaaaa hbd oikawa again!!
“It’s like getting slapped in the face really hard and coming back to reality. Neither of us can let the other win, and we’ve both trained to win. It all makes sense. It’s to be expected, but the reality is still so terrifying.”
