If someone is pissing you off posting about House Bill 2 in North Carolina...

Here’s a literature review I wrote citing 5 peer-reviewed journals.

North Carolina has seen a lot of fallout from HBII. Lawmakers and proponents have used an exceptional amount of flourish to disguise the bill as an effort to make ‘restrooms more safe’ from sexual predators. However, in doing so, the bill has made life a lot more complicated for the .03% of the population [1] whose gender identities do not match the genitalia they were born with. The house even tacked on a nice little section about hiring discrimination (section 3.1) [2]. However, if you want definitive proof that HBII is an assault on the face of the trans community, look at the revision of section 3.1(a).

   Original version: “It is the public policy of this State to protect and safeguard the right and opportunity of all persons to seek, obtain and hold employment without discrimination or abridgement on account of race, religion, color, national origin, age, sex or handicap by employers which regularly employ 15 or more employees.”

   Revised version: “It is the public policy of this State to protect and safeguard the right and opportunity of 57 all persons to seek, obtain and hold employment without discrimination or abridgement on 58 account of race, religion, color, national origin, age, *biological* sex or handicap by employers 59 which regularly employ 15 or more employees.”

In other words, the house went through the trouble of revising this bill to include a provision *literally allowing businesses the right to discriminate against non-biological sex.* I think, then, that it is safe to conclude that this bill was in no way written with any other intent than discriminating against the transgender community.

“But a man still can’t go into a woman’s bathroom one day because he decides he’s a woman!” You say. Well, that’s not what transgenderism is. Transgenderism is a psychologically proven phenomenon associated with gender dysphoria, wherein a person has severe discomfort with their assigned sex/gender. Gender disphoria is classified as a disorder by the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition[3],[4]. In other words, it’s not some random choice people make one day.

As a matter of fact, research has shown that transgender/sexualism has correlations with several genetic factors, in addition to environmental ones [4],[5].

A genetic factor is a big deal here, because it makes it a lot harder to argue that transgender people are just influenced by their culture, or that it’s a phase (same sorts of studies have been done on the homosexual community and proved the same thing [6]). These are people who legitimately feel out of place in their own skin, with brains that have statistically different workings than those of cisgender people [3]. Antagonizing them is just cruel.
