Congratulations, Kate (19, EST)! I knew that choosing Lily’s writer was going to be one of the trickiest decisions I’d have to make. Not only is this Lily slightly different from the norm, but I was looking for someone who could take that wild, brilliant, precocious, and contrary girl and make her blossom. But... wow. That’s all I can say. I seriously, really, almost cannot articulate how well you understand Lily. I was absolutely hooked by your application from the first line. You have a spectacular writing voice and you gave such depth to her character. Those little snippets (Lily, smoking in bed; frowning at a DADA book; curled in her messy nest of a room; those old Doc Martens; that wrinkled-nose grin) just brought her so completely to life, it felt like you took a cursory glance at what I’d written and just made it into something beyond what I was expecting. Your Lily is rash but resolved, headstrong but sensitive, sexual but lonely. One of my favourite parts about your application is your ability to unravel her character piece by piece, and you did it in such a way that truly made me feel as if for all her contradictions, you understand the core of her. Congratulations, Dev (20, EST)! Peter can be such a tricky character to have in groups, and I think you said it perfectly when it’s too easy to write him as if joining the Death Eaters is a far-off event, lost to the future. Your Peter, on the other hand, is dynamic. What I absolutely adored most about your whole application was, actually, your writing sample. You write very evocatively, and I could tell from the way you depicted Peter that you understood his innate uncertainty, that well-meaning tenderness, that cautionary nature, and it’s all wrapped up in someone who has learned to laugh along, because that’s what you do. I think you unpacked so many essential parts of his character (his relationship to and within the Marauders was a special highlight) that I found myself nodding intently so many times throughout your application. Your headcanons were really wonderful to read. I especially enjoyed the reasoning you gave for him staying at home. I think that was very authentically done, very in-keeping with his character, that I instantly felt like you just knew how to write a character who is, let’s be honest, so marginalized in canon. Congratulations, Megan (21, EST)! Wow, is all I can say. Thank God you decided to reapply as Dorcas, because every aspect of your interpretation was spot on. And I mean everything -- this was a staggeringly excellent application to behold. I think you write in a very clear and concise way; and you managed to bring forth little parts about Dorcas (the fact she’s assassinated by Voldemort; the centrality of friendship and love in her life; her core motivation) that I had only hinted at, and you shaped her into someone who is so fully realized. I am particularly taken with the way you’ve balanced Dorcas’ quiet fire with her shrewd intuition -- and even the fact you used shrewd is just so correct. You’ve managed to craft her personality so thoroughly, I could picture your version of Dorcas making a real contribution to the group plot and to the atmosphere of the group as a whole. Your plot ideas, actually, are some of the most enjoyable I’ve read. Also, I have to give you major points for just embracing who Dorcas is and saying it: she’s a lesbian. remus lupin.

Congratulations, Vera (21, EST)! I went back and forth over Remus’ applications a dozen times. This was probably the hardest decision I had to make, no joke. In the end, though, the openness with which you discussed Remus and developed his character just made so much sense to me. Remus’ clutter and absent-mindedness was utterly charming, very evocative, as was the way you folded in his caginess around his financial and health problems. Your decision to portray Remus as asexual was an inspired one that made an incredible amount of sense within his biography, particularly his relationship to Dorcas and his reaction to Sirius’ affections. The way you grew Remus and Lily throughout your application was simply beautiful and organic. My most favourite part was actually something very simple: Remus using magic all the time in his every day life. That casual adoration for his magic was domestic and meaningful in a way that felt very authentic. This was a very well-written application and I am excited to see you here! Congratulations, Cass (21, GMT-5)! Where the hell do I even start? I started your application and actually couldn’t stop. Your Sirius is truly exquisite, and as someone who has had experience playing him, I could not get over the depth you brought to his character, and the absolutely beautiful way you’ve developed him. I am particularly taken with the way you’ve balanced Sirius’ turbulent pureblood past and mannerisms with his sincere, burning desire to be a new person -- a good person. Sirius grew up believing that love was something you expressed to anyone but those you held dearest. There aren’t words enough for how powerful this one line is. Your Sirius is performative and intensely lonely all at once. Equating his need to be loved with drowning was sublime. You have a particularly evocative, subtle way of writing that I frankly find fascinating. It’s clear you have such a grasp of Sirius as a person: where he’s going, where he’s been, who he is. hestia jones.

The applications for Hestia were very powerful across the board, but when I reflected I think it was your acknowledgement of Hestia’s hidden strength that really brought it home. You crafted a secret world for her (weaving spells when she is alone; the solitude of the greenhouses; being “a realist and a romantic all at once”) that evoked that peculiar private, quiet intensity that is so a part of her character. She really is someone who watches the world. As you said, if this were a different life, she could have had a happy, simple existence. I’m going to be so impressed to see how you develop her role within the group. marlene mckinnon.

Congratulations, Em (19, EST)! I had two very strong contenders for Marlene, both of which portrayed her beautifully, but I was totally swept away by your application. There were so many lines that stood out to me. You are completely correct in that Marlene is someone who is not fearless, but “filled with fear”, and uses her intense emotions as a crutch. I thought you portrayed her sexuality and feelings towards Dorcas and Lily is an extremely sensitive and authentic light. You gave weight to the complex struggle Marlene is facing, and presented it so beautifully. Marlene is weak because she has a big heart -- this nailed it for me. That and your gorgeous writing samples, and the details (her cutting her hair! Only being able to handle Remus and Lily’s intellect in small doses!
