YEONSEOK ENDS UP RIDING THE ELEVATOR TO THE 19TH FLOOR. it’s the close of another dismal day in seoul— humid like any other— charged with the impatient sort of energy that compels a pair of aimless eyes to glance discreetly into the face of a nearby clock ( look away, glance again ), counting toward a future something. it’s a frame of mind that fills yeonseok with great unrest.

his vocal instructor had stopped him from singing this afternoon to say this: “yeonseok. are you still too young to understand the feelings being expressed here? — love. if you don’t have enough experience with it, then your homework for tonight is to watch Titanic and cry.” ( and yeonseok had said: “okay. i’ll do that.” )

it was meant as a joke. yeonseok isn’t so obtuse as to misinterpret the assignment as anything but, yet the frustration in his instructor’s voice was palpable, impatient. either you watch Titanic or you grow up. the decision is simple. there isn’t a reality where yeonseok leaves his destiny in the hands of some future self, so if these are his two options, then: he’s going to watch Titanic.

the 19th floor is still and slimly populated when he enters it. yeonseok settles himself and his laptop somewhere along the edge of a couch, where his only company is a girl with hair the color of autumn, seated a little ways away. his eyes flit downward: Titanic. on the film’s poster, the male lead has his chin hooked over the female lead’s shoulder. one of them will die; a historical tragedy will unfold. yeonseok will spend the next 195 minutes chewing it over. ... maybe it's best to start with an appetizer.

he leans over the arm of the couch and cranes his neck to regard the autumn-haired girl. somehow, her face is familiar. he squints. ( recognition tumbles into him with a belated sort of bluster. ) “hey!” yeonseok shatters the stillness of the room, his smile wide and disarming. “heyy! know any good romantic movies? maybe one where the main characters don’t, uh. ...…... die?”

the bass line cuts zoe deep. her body's still humming when she snaps out of the last eight-count, momentum carrying her half a step before she steadies, checking the mirror like it owes her confirmation. clean. sharp. of course it is. she rakes her fingers through damp hair, tugging her tee back into place, already picturing what the cameras will catch once s real stage comes into play. nothing is confirmed but in her head, the angles are framed, the lights are blinding, and the charts are hers. sweat beads at her temples, pulse synced to the echo of the beat still buzzing in her chest, daring her to run it back.

zoe drifts toward the speaker dock, thumb grazing her phone, when her roommate shifts in the reflection. not the lights overhead or her own silhouette, but movement at the doorway. she doesn't speak right away (silence is leverage, and she likes to make people earn her attention) but her gaze sways toward the door, curiosity softening her pretty features.

"...you coming in, or just standing there like a fan?" she drawls, light, teasing with enough pull to make it sound like both a provocation and an invitation. the smirk that curls after is the zoe trademark, like she already knows what answer she prefers and astrid better guess right.
