The 2023 – 2024 Human Development Report charts ways forward for all of us on this shared planet, in ways that does not assume away divergent interests but work with them. It argues for a reimagining of Global Public Goods, which allows us to move beyond narrow zero-sum thinking and supports cooperation even as we have diverging interests and views.
We live in highly interdependent societies in which we share global challenges. Those include addressing climate change and harnessing digital technologies, in particular artificial intelligence, to advance human development. Yet we are falling short in mobilizing the cooperation needed at scale and speed to meet these challenges.
Going forward, addressing shared challenges will be ever more important as societies become more linked in multiple ways – in part because of the dangerous planetary changes of the Anthropocene, such as pandemics, climate change, biodiversity loss, which transcend borders, – and in part because digital technologies are supercharging cross-border flows of information and bringing vast geographic distances closer together, in almost real time.
