Theory why Vesuvia hates Lucio and loves Julian
Well, I guess the last update supports my theory that the people from Vesuvian didn’t like Count Lucio and that’s why they don’t report Julian. After all he says himself, that the people cover up for him to get back at the palace. And why? Besides Lucio’s insufferable character it was his politics. When you travel with Nadia through the city you see poverty and districts under water, while in other parts Lucio had built beautiful monuments to his honor or the previous Count (which I doubt and it’s actually a display of his own victory over that Count) Maybe the Council was in charge the last three years, but I guess they just continued to follow Lucio’s politics or at least kept everything stable that was for their own benefit. So yeah, the people are angry at Lucio and the Council.
For another reason why the people cover up for Julian, I need to go back a little bit to the theory that Lucio and Julian knew each other from the Count’s time as mercenary. There isn’t much that actually hints to it. Maybe the fact that Julian carries around a fortune in different currencies, since as a mercenary you work in different countries/regions. (I know, he could also have got them on his run, but I doubt that.) Another is, that he is labeled (I forgot by whom) as Lucio’s trusted physician. As far as I can judge Lucio’s character, he wouldn’t throw the word ‘trusted’ easily around, so Julian would have had to be around him for a while, maybe even giving him that metal arm.
Okay, when we believe that they know each other longer that means there is the possibility that Julian was with Lucio when he conquered Vesuvia. And given Julian’s kind nature he wasn’t so thrilled about it, especially about the way Lucio ruled over the city later. I believe that one of the reasons he has such feelings of guilt and nightmares is that he feels responsible for the misery state of the city and it’s people, because he was the one who healed Lucio or maybe didn’t take the chance to take the mans life to keep the city safe back then. (And that could be a motive for him to kill Lucio on his birthday. Lucio did something/was about to do something that was too much and Julian had to stop it.) Maybe Julian was still Lucio’s physician during his reign or not (because Lucio kicked him out for being too soft), in any case he was very often in the city to take care of the sick people, to make good for Lucio’s cruelty and because I can imagine due to the politics not many people could afford a doctor. And that is why the people love Julian so much, because he took care of them and their loved ones without asking for anything (or at least not much) in return.
One thing that could be a little bit in the way of this theory is Nadia’s statement, that Julian accepted the invitation from her and Lucio to the palace to cure the plague. Maybe Julian had indeed left the palace or was kicked out, but since Nadia has the memory loss I don’t know how much we can trust her words in this regard. Maybe she simply hasn’t known the doctor before.
