So we're all clear, in the Spanish subtitles in 13x21, it translates Castiel's statement that Sam is gone into "Está muerto"--"He's dead", so Castiel was simply using a common English euphemism. Just in case there are any people who still think that Castiel abandoned Sam while he was alive.
