Pine wands always chose an independent, individual master who might be perceived as a loner, intriguing and perhaps mysterious. Pine wands enjoyed being used creatively, and unlike some others, would adapt unprotestingly to new methods and spells. Many wandmakers insisted that pine wands were able to detect, and perform best for, owners who were destined for long lives, including Garrick Ollivander who had never personally known the master of a pine wand to die young. Pre-Hogwarts:
Ares’s family used to be wealthy, but by the time his father and uncle were born, most of the family fortune had run dry. Still, the Gaunts clung to their name like a lifeline, refusing to sell their vast estate. Ares’s grandparents had ages ago let all the staff go, and the house had fallen into disrepair. Ares’s father and mother acted every bit as aristocratic as the family always had, despite their financial predicament. Ares and his siblings were raised to hold their heads high and demand respect for their name. Ares and his brother took to it easily enough, but their sister, Leda, was of a different sort.
Ares grew up with extremely strict parents who demanded nothing but the best from him. The family was blood-purist and held traditional pure blood Wizarding values in high regard, never forgetting that they were descendants of Salazar Slytherin himself. All the Gaunt children were expected to make financially beneficial matches, and they were raised to accept this fate.
Hogwarts Years:
Ares was sorted into Slytherin and made friends with a like-minded group of the scions of old, pure-blood families. Since he wasn’t really rich, though, he wasn’t quite as popular as the rest of his friends. He didn’t mind being sidelined, since he didn’t enjoy being the center of attention. Ares and his group were despised by those who didn’t share their views on blood-purity.
As the years went by, Ares began to realize that he wasn’t the same as the rest of his so-called friends. That he would never fit in, and that he was mostly held on to his parents’ attitudes because he was afraid of disappointing them. He began to distance himself from the others, slowly but surely, but he never made amends with those he had hurt, at least, not during school.
The Elian and Theo Goldcrest Incident:
During the summer after Ares’s sixth year at Hogwarts, he found out that his brother, Proteus, had been killed by Elian and Theo Goldcrest, a pair of vampire brothers, and distant relatives of Ares himself. He resolved to kill the brothers to avenge his brother’s death. He tracked them down in Scotland, intent on slaying the vampires. Elian and Theo, being powerful ancient beings, bested him easily. Theo wanted to kill him immediately, but Elian disagreed. He didn’t want to spill any more of the blood of his mother’s family. The brothers let him go, injured but alive. The biggest dent was suffered by Ares’s ego, though, and he became intent on becoming powerful enough to get his vengeance, some day.
Post-Hogwarts:
Ares left his family home shortly after graduating. He had almost no money to his name, but he enrolled in auror training at the Ministry. He became an auror and rented a small flat in London. He cut all ties with his family, including his little sister. He had wanted to bring her with him, but he was only a teenager himself, and he figured he would get on his feet, gather some money, and then help Leda.
Joining The Great War:
When it seemed inevitable that the Muggle world was going to be thrust into war, the Ministry of Magic resolved to do its part in upholding the Statute of Secrecy, and stopping Dark Wizards from using the chaos to advance their evil ways. Ares, always looking for ways to get even further away from his family, joined the voluntary group of wizards who were trained to join the muggle army as under-cover agents. He learned to pass as a muggle and was planted into the army as a captain.

Proteus was twelve, when Ari was born, and he always idolized his older brother. After Hogwarts, Proteus went on a quest to find an heirloom of his family. In 1894, he accidentally found the hiding place of Elian and Theo Goldcrest, being able to wake them up from their enchanted sleep because he was distantly related to them. Proteus was killed by the brothers, and the knowledge of his death reached his family via his betrothed, Alyssa Grimm. Since his death, Ares has created an image of this perfect older brother in his head, though the truth of it was, that while Proteus certainly loved his younger siblings, his own ambitions were his driving force.

Leda was born in 1890, and was only four when Proteus died. Ares and Leda were close growing up, but when Ari left his family behind after school, they didn’t keep in contact. Leda tried not to blame her brother for leaving her with their parents, but sometimes she was resentful. Towards the end of 1916, however, she was worried for Ari’s safety and went to the front lines to try and find him.

Father: Argus Gaunt
Argus was the older brother of Marvolo Gaunt. He was the head of the Gaunt family after the death of his father and inherited a run-down husk of an estate. Argus, however, was a proud man, and kept up appearances. He worked at the Ministry and had a seat in the Wizengamot. He managed to turn the fortunes of the family for a while, but the estate was simply too large to uphold with the money that Argus brought in. If he had sold the estate and moved his family somewhere more modest, he might have been able to stop the complete ruin of his family. But, as said, he was a proud man, and his family name, image, and lands were the most important thing to him.
Argus was a stern father, extremely concerned with his children’s public image and that they excelled academically. His clear favourite child was Proteus and after his death, Argus became even more distant and closed-off emotionally. He was also extreme in his blood-purist views, but carried about it in a more discreet (and to a degree, more harmful) ways than his brother Marvolo. Instead of attacking random muggles for sport, he promoted legislature to limit the rights of Muggleborns and half-bloods.

Calliope and Argus were first cousins, but in the grand Gaunt tradition of keeping the family line pure, they were married when Calliope was 15. Their first son, Proteus, was born a year later. Calliope doted on her first born son, spending much time with him, especially since they couldn’t afford a nanny. With the other two children, Calliope was disillusioned from the role of a mother. She had no choice but to take care of them herself, but she resented her lack of riches and having to put in the work herself.
Calliope thought that household chores were beneath her, and she always put on appearances of wealth and aristocracy when out in public. She was heartbroken when Proteus died, transferring her hopes and dreams of a rise in station to Ares, but they were never as close. When Ares left home, she became even crueller towards her only daughter, who was making it extremely difficult to find a good, rich husband for her.

Ares and Kits meet during November of 1914 in France. They grow closer after Ares saves Kit’s life during an enemy attack, and the two get separated from their fellow soldiers..They spend few days together, trying to make it back to their men. During their misadventure, Ares has to use magic to save himself and Kit sees him do it. He is about to wipe his memories, but Kit tells him that he is already familiar with magic and manages to talk Ares out of it. They end up getting closer during their trip and spend a night together.
This turns into a habit with the two and they get to know each other even more. It turns into a love affair.
They go on a leave at the same time. During it they consider leaving the war and disappearing together. They change their minds when Ares is called upon to take care of a dangerous situation that involves a dark wizards. He feels it’s his duty to fight. Kit feels the same way and agrees it’s better to go back. Ares leaves his gun for Kit, so he has better chances of surviving.

After his breakup with Kit, Ares is once again sent to track down and get rid of the dark wizards threatening the Ministry. He receives word of Kit’s marriage to Odessa Avery, and starts making several bad decisions in a row, hooking up with the leader of the dark wizards, Ren Godfrey, chief among them.

As a child, Ares was easily lead and wanted to impress his brother and demanding parents. It was easy to mold him into the kind of son Argus and Calliope wanted, at least, until he became a teenager and realized he would never be the kind of son his parents wanted. After beginning to discover his sexuality, he clung to his parents’ approval even harder at first, so as not to reveal his “failings”. Through the fear it brought him, he began to see that he had been wrong to subscribe to the bigotry of his family in the first place. But it did take he himself being threatened for him to see that what he had done and believed in was wrong.
Despite his upbringing, Ares tries to strive to do what’s right. He becomes an auror to help people, but he also doesn’t always see the failings of the auror office. He’s brave, quick to anger, closed off but also desperate to be loved. Ares doesn’t have a lot of friends, but once you’ve got his loyalty, he will do anything for you. Including stupid shit. He comes off as rational and even calculating, but when it comes to Kit and Leda, for example, he will throw caution to the wind for them. Despite his flaws, he tries to leave the world a better place than he found it.
