The average person in the Pokemon World can’t name every Pokemon. Within a region, a person might be able to name the most common Pokemon in their area, and a few famous species. Many people even know common Pokemon from around the world, but rarely can the average civilian name species that are seen less often. For example, most people don’t come into contact with Hydreigon, but many recognize the Pokemon anyway. On the other hand, many people won’t know an Exeggutor (Alolans being an exception, specifically with the Alolan Exeggutor) or Xatu just by looking at it. They may know a general classification such as “it’s a bird” or “it appears to be a rodent” or “it’s a type of whale”, but they may not know the specific species unless it is specific to their city/region or culture.
