we know about Marty but what do you think Reggie's relationship with his mom is like?
man what I wouldn't GIVE to see or at least more about melinda on the show... what little we've seen is interesting enough (imo) but it's really not much to go on. that said, the way I tend to see(/write) their dynamic is...
well, obviously as we've seen he's kind of intimidated by her, and my impression is that-- well, first of all, I think both melinda and marty are kind of caught up in their own lives/obligations and just kind of expect that reggie will fall into relative step with their expectations on his own, they're not too fussed about what he does while he's still in high school as long as he performs well where they want him to and doesn't get himself or them into Trouble™, but obviously he has more of a "well I'll just fuck around and find out anyway" attitude because reggie's used to getting punished even when he hasn't actually done anything, so he has no real incentive not to get up to the kind of shit he does. might as well do the crime if you're already gonna do the time etc
though that still has a lot to do with his relationship with marty, which is that I don't really think reggie's that concerned with what his dad thinks much anymore, once he sort of recognized his dad is impossible to please and even if/when reggie does something that makes him proud it's always very conditional. so he's probably learned not to expect or rely on validation from his dad (even if he'd like it).
with melinda though, i think she pays closer attention, she's not a helicopter parent by any means but she is much more specific when it comes to what she wants and expects from reggie than marty is (and because of that also a little more aware than marty usually is of just what is going on in reggie's life, his classes, his school schedule etc. because she checks in with reggie about these things on a sorta-semi-regular basis) and if reggie fails to meet those expectations her disappointment (anger, whatever) hits different because unlike his dad, his mom does not forget these moments and truly will see and think differently of him from then on, not for good, but it's much easier to let her down than make her proud, and not easy at all to come back from letting her down or change her mind/perspective for the better at that point.
but, also, of his parents, she's the one he can talk to a bit more straightforwardly -- as opposed to the minefield of his dad -- because while he's not particularly emotionally close with either of them he's more so with his mom, she's more practical with advice or perspective when he's really struggling with something he can't figure out on his own (sometimes even a little comforting although warmth is pretty fleeting with her). not usually super deep stuff, but even just school/sports/very very very feelings-adjacent things he wouldn't want or be able to talk to his friends about and definitely not his dad
so I think reggie feels higher stakes in the relationship with his mom if that makes sense, he really doesn't want to lose her trust or respect because there is less of a guarantee he'd be able to ever earn it back. (which may or may not be true but that's just what he thinks, he definitely doesn't think of his parents' love as an unconditional thing.) what she thinks about him matters, and while he's still gonna do what he's gonna do, it's why his mom is the one he'd be more worried about catching him/finding out things he's been getting up to than his dad. I also think reggie's impression of her is probably a lot stricter and unforgiving than she actually is, but she's a mantle so she obviously puts up a fierce front of her own and maybe just hasn't entirely considered how it comes off to reggie vs how it comes off to marty / any of the other people she has to deal with during a regular day.
but he respects her very much, maybe even more so because he's kind of scared of her
