she wouldn’t have called it stalking , exactly . just . . . observing . learning from the best . discovering all her interests , all her secrets , the ones she wouldn’t even tell her friends . mona hoped maybe then , maybe if she could mould herself into the perfect companion , the perfect confidant , one that wanted to do everything the blonde wanted to do . . . maybe then she’d earn a place amongst the chosen few .
that’s how she found out about the party , one that by some stroke of luck was going on only one street over from her house.
mona wasn’t wearing her pigtails and knee socks now , she had gone dressed as much like the queen bee as she could manage , hoping to impress . her hair was curled , her heels were tall and she’d spent an hour on her makeup . . . but by the time she got there there was no time to show off . alison was already drunk ( maybe even drugged by the way she was stumbling ) and talking to some guy who was getting way too friendly with the blonde , who was clearly the youngest party goer of the night .
wrapping an arm around the waist of her daily tormentor , mona’s heart was beating nearly out of her chest as she guided the girl’s arm around her neck and began walking back out the front door . in no other circumstances would she dare to be so bold . . . but as she walked alison toward the safety of her own home , she was glad to have taken the risk.
this drunken confession from the queen of mean was everything loser mona had been wanting to hear from her since the start of 7 th grade . though the last few words she slurred were a little concerning . ❝ i’d never let anyone hurt you like that , ali . never . ❞ spoken with complete sincerity , mona wondered if alison remember any of this when she woke up .
