She’s a very interesting character & I wish we got more from her! In just a small moment of the scene we got w/her on the show you could see that she still had her pride after everything. I didn’t find her to seem like she was dwelling on the past by once again being put in a situation that involved Violet. She’s a strong woman after everything & probably was wary of Vi’s intentions after all these years. I do think that maybe she & Vi had some sort of unspoken understanding of why she reunited her w/Igor. I couldn’t imagine her wanting to tell Vi off or even fight w/her after all this time. The idea of her marriage is interesting, what if she & Igor were chosen for each other for reasons besides their own love? Him having an affair would’ve caused her more damage than him so she had to fight to keep it together. I can’t imagine a conclusion b/w her & Violet. I think Irina would’ve remained reserved abt her feelings and that would’ve been that. I’m just a little disappointed that we got so little of her & what we know was that she attacked Violet lol, she’s an interesting & strong character. It sucks a lot of ppl probably hate her because of that lol. ALSO ICE QUEEN PERFECTION.

I see your point about her not wanting to engage with Violet over Igor. I think why I tend to be intrigued by the idea of the opposite of that situation is the fact that he seemed to care so very little about Irina, certainly in episode 8. He was all for divorcing her in that scene with Violet, and you start to suspect that Irina probably knew him well enough to know that that’s how he’d think, especially when Violet is in the picture. Plus she knows that he’s been around Violet now for a few weeks at least, if not longer. As much as I think she’d not want to dwell on the past, there’d have to be a niggle of doubt there, some tiny seed in her mind to question the relationship between her husband and former mistress, although ultimately I think Irina would look at Igor, know he was in love with Violet, but think Violet not interested because of how penniless he is. I suppose the scene I really want to see is one between the reunited Kuragins. So little about Igor made sense in the CS, but you have to imagine that that relationship wasn’t really going to improve much, short of Igor lying through his teeth and declaring that Violet meant nothing to him but a means of getting Irina back. That might have bought him a somewhat less awkward life in Paris, but Irina seems too perceptive to fall for that - especially knowing the history. It’s such an intriguing scenario - a love triangle full of complications, tragic endings, and where ultimately every party is sort of wronged. Violet in a way attempts to try and put it all right - she comes at the situation with hindsight and maybe an even bigger appreciation for what Irina saved her from when she sees the results of the revolution on the upper class of Russian society. Although she and Igor were eloping, there’s no guarantee they would have later avoided the same fate that the befell Igor and Irina at the hands of the Bolsheviks.  

I do wish we’d had more of her - more of them both, individually and together. They were fascinating, almost an odd couple in a way.

ngl it saddens me to see how much Irina is disliked. I love Violet but I can’t hate Irina because she is also a character who is a woman & had her on problems w/her relationship & situation. She was royalty & in a position where she probably feared if she lost her husband she’d also lose her place in society & it would look bad on her as well. You’ve got to hand it to her, she fought to keep him instead of saying let him go run around w/whomever what do I care? We don’t really know how she felt or what she was going thru being married to him. And yeah after many years & probably having to deal w/his other affairs she may have hardened herself & believed that all the women he tried to leave w/were just the same so why should she care for them?

I find Irina utterly fascinating. I can understand the hate - she was in effect set up as the villain of the piece, not aided by her rather terse manner in the 2 minutes that we saw her on the show. I think that's one of the reasons why the Christmas Special was such a monumental let down - not only did we get no substantial emotional conclusion between Violet and Igor, but we got no conclusion between Violet and Irina either. It was a situation pregnant with possibilities, and with two amazing actresses, and there was nothing. It just felt like such a waste of talent and situation. Everything about Irina is interesting; she's a wronged woman in so many ways. His affair(s), the loss of her old life in the revolution, being shipped off to Hong Kong, and then everything compounded in its awfulness by the fact that it's Violet, Igor's former mistress, the woman he wanted to leave her for, being the one to rescue her, and then having to wear her clothes. It's like hit, after hit, after hit - she has literally nothing left but whatever modicum of pride that's still inside her. That's amazing. She walked into that reception room at the Dower House with such a powerful presence and demeanor that Violet, VIOLET!!! stepped back. And she managed that in one of Violet's hand me down dresses. A dress from the woman her husband was and still is in love with. I have my own theories about Irina, and her marriage. I think what's clear is that there must have been love there at some stage, but something went wrong. At no stage is it mentioned that the Kuragins had children - which might well be an issue, if she couldn't conceive. I also sort of wonder if perhaps, like Igor, she'd fallen in love with someone else too and it hadn't worked out, so when it came to him falling for Violet, she was so determined to stop him from leaving - that she wanted to deny him what had been denied her. I do think appearances had a lot to do with it too. Marriage was a big damn deal in Russian society, with divorce extremely hard to get - and invariably, women bore the burnt of society's outrage for it, even if the man was in the wrong. It makes perfect sense that she'd put up a fight to protect her reputation and place in society.
