So much Headworlding
Man, I have been headworlding like crazy lately. My sketchbook is filled with all of the Vezkel outfits for Elverlaii, Spellcasters Healers, Warriors, Elders, Xen's 3 outfits, a new race and just other misc. things I have been sketching out on the bus and in my friends car while we are on our way somewhere. Too bad I don't have a scanner that works anymore cause I would post them here... I probably could just take a picture of them, but it's not as nice if you do them that way, lol.
What are some common zenn diseases? Do they have a common cold? The flu? Bacterial infections? How about allergies? Chicken pox? Are baby zenn vaccinated against any illnesses? And what about non-infectious diseases, like cancer or lupus? Can zenn get diabetes?
The Zenn do have something like the common cold only it’s not so common. Adults are likely to get it and not notice it at all. Their bodies fight it off easily. But for a one-year-old it can be pretty life threatening. It really depends on how robust their immune systems are which are still developing.
Bacterial infections can happen but are usually uncommon. There are some cases of flesh eating bacteria that can cause limb loss or death. Very rare. Usually this only happens with exposure to rotting carcasses when the individual has an open wound of some sort. HOWEVER. It is so cold that rotting corpses are rare. They usually just freeze solid if they aren’t eaten first. It IS possible for them to get it from a hotspring contaminated with a corpse that carries the flesh eating bacteria if the hotspring is just cool enough to keep that bacteria alive rather than killing it. Again, only with open wounds. One of the Zenn’s best defenses is their insane stomach acid. Nothing gets passed that usually.
Metropolitan Zenn (space age) do vaccinate their kids or at the least expose them to these sorts of things in small doses to get their immune system up to speed. They tried being hyper clean but that actually lead to a huge boom in deaths in that generation of Zenn because of insufficient immune systems.
Things like Cancer or lupus are pretty unheard of. Maybe 1 in 1 million instances. Its usually genetic. There isn’t any radiation they need to worry about. They do have diseases and genetically inherited disorders where the sensory hairs on a Zenn’s body are malformed or otherwise don’t function correctly. Sometimes its mistaken for schizophrenic behavior.
The way the hairs work is that its sorta like cat whiskers or the ventral line on a fish. It detects movement in the air that they can filter out from the sort of distraction that a breeze is as well as being able to key in on air pressure changes. Its really hard to ever sneak up on a Zenn. But imagine being in an empty building. There are no people. No windows open. No gaps under the door. No fans. And for some reason you keep feeling like something is brushing by you really closely or you feel something blow across the top of your head. It gets freaky for a Zenn with this condition. It makes them really jumpy and paranoid and they have to rely on other senses to get by without having a panic attack. They end up having trouble sleeping too. Even if they swaddled themselves in a blanket the sensory hair organs could be firing signals to the brain. (Many Zenn normally like sleeping all swaddled up like that so that so that they don’t have to worry about that while others can seem to ignore it just fine. Essentially like people who can sleep with some noise or those who need no noise or light/no light, covers/no covers)
Zenn who are found with this condition can opt for surgeries to remove the hairs which is a very discomforting experience. They’re losing one of their major senses. But at the very least they finally get some peace. Unfortunately regardless of whether or not they get treatment it still disqualifies them from having breeding rights.
Likewise putting any clothing on tends to dampen or eliminate use of the sensory hairs on those sections of the body. For this reason the head, torso, and tail are usually sparsely covered or covered only for necessity. They have enough fur to get by without clothing at least in the spring and summer months. Some Zenn prefer clothing in city settings where there are so many individuals that it gives them a really squirmy sardines-in-a-tin sort of feel. Its like being close to others without being close. They don’t have an issue with actually touching though. Riding the bus, squeezing themselves in to fit. But the moving part can give some individuals a little bit of nervous anxiety if/until they get accustomed to it. For this reason a Zenn’s home is a private space and it is a priviledge to be able to share the same air like that. It can also be a warning if it’s only one individual. They can isolate the individual in a way that essentially says ‘you and I are the only ones in this space so I know exactly where you are and what you’re doing’. It’s all about context and body language.
Anyway, back to diseases and the like. The reason there aren’t that many is because those who have had things like that were either killed by their fellows or it was an environmental disadvantage to have, enough so that it weeded out any bloodline with it. Like the Paski they are relatively intolerate of any ailment that is considered disadvantageous. Breeding is regulated but in their space age time they’ve opted to allow any individual who is born that way despite what looked like clean genetics to live out their lives but are stripped of their chance to apply for breeding rights.
As for chicken pox… Yeah, they probably have a few things like that, that affect the kids to a lesser extent but can be life threatening as adults. The physical manifestation is probably different though. Don’t think they can get diabetes either or anything equivalent.
