I have spent all of today reading The Healing Doll Way by @bekobedolls. And what a marvellous day it has been. Such a brilliant book, so much resonates. I am excited to see how this boom will influence my Fetches. Yay. I am about to start the chapter on spirit dolls next. Hooray . [Image Description. Three images. Small pipe and runestone set, made from @pebea Airdry clay, and purple pouch. I am quite pleased with how these came out. They are being held by and equally lovely Hare Fetch, who I will introduce once they are finished. And yes this one is already sold. oh and because someone asked. These Fetches, are around 60cm tall are somewhere inbetween ¼ and 1/3 in size, so not really small but also not really big. Progress shot on the Jacket, which I have to say is coming out super well, I am impressed with the leg of mutton sleeves, just the ticket for a suffragette Lady of excellent social standing. I will be stitching up the facing and lining today. Quite looking forward to picking out buttons. And a question: Why do I call these art dolls Fetches? According to Wikipedia, a Fetch “is a supernatural double or an apparition of a living person” and it is the supernatural double aspect of the fetch that, according to some folklore type stories that I have heard, that witches use to travel into the spirit worlds. I have also heard that fetches are sometimes witches spirit familiars, which is how I use the word. These Art dolls, these Fetches are magical creations that are connected to spirits and spirit familiars. Many people have commented on how they feel a little bit different, to other art dolls. Now that I am reading two books, one on spirit dolls and one of healing dolls I would say that I have been making these kinds of dolls all along, but just didn’t have names for them as such. These Fetches are imbued with magic and spirit and are a joy to create. . a Friend recently pointed out that while I was making Fetches because they are a familiar thing in these scary times, they are also Familiars. . Damn it, I am goanna have to remake the waist coat.. *mutters darkly*.. I nearly had it right.. but just not quite.. *sigh*.. but first I will sew up the jacket, so I can have at think about what changes I need to make for the waist coat. I think it needs to be a bit wider but I do like the fabric and length. . Anyway, she has a full name now, Lady Kathryn Regina Bastet, of the Levin Bastet’s a very renown family in Levin, quite up with the politics and rights for women, she is the head of her local Suffragette chapter, and outspoken in her stance for women’s votes. {she is also sold} and will be wining her way to her new home, in a month or so. . A piece I just finished for my bathroom. It’s a social commentary on what’s going on in the world of today. I made the background from old vintage papers, but then distressed them to look like faded, crumbling wall paper/decay. She is a healing doll representative of the Raven, known for its craftiness and divination. At face value, with my eyes wide opened, I am judged. “You need to smile more”. “Relax” “You look mad/sad”. “You look tired”. With my eyes closed - an assumed softness is assigned as “wise, calm , comforting and safe”.
