A panda delivered Vael's gift, making mention that the red haired priest had left it behind at some point, and he didn't want to bother Vael, having assumed he was with Thorne at the time. The box was labeled, 'For Velvet', easily giving away Basil, though the panda had long since done that. Within was a simple, brown leather bound book, and with it a quill with a long, blue feather. With the book was a letter, easily seen as it stuck out from the pages. (Cont.)

The letter reads, “A book cannot talkback, nor give guidance, but it can hold your thoughts and frustrations. Ithought that maybe this could be a way to give yourself a little release? Iheard once that if you write down what upsets you, then rip up the pages orburn them, it relieves stress. Not sure if it works but, just a suggestion!Also, the quill is a present from Know. One of his feathers had come loose, andI always like to make use of them. Thought you would like this one!”
~~~~~~~
Vaelanyshad received the box with gratitude and a small pang of something like worry.For a moment he merely sat with it cradled in his lap before he slowly toreaway the paper. Somehow it didn’t surprise him that the priest knew him wellenough to have chosen such a perfect gift. Lifting the journal from the box hesimply held it for a moment, enjoying the sturdy feel of the leather in hisfingers, while he read the accompanying letter.
He keptmany things in leather journals much like this one, his personal herb guide,his carefully noted recipes for tea blends he liked, and lately sketches andmusings on his travels. He had a journal that held some of his private thoughts,but the pages of that had nearly run out.
He flippedthe new volume open, let his fingers ruffle through the empty pagesthoughtfully. He wondered what he would write in them, and if they would bethings he would wish to tear or burn as the note suggested or instead things hechose to keep, to cling to so that he could remember them later.
He liftedthe quill last, running his fingers gently over the dark blue feather beforeshifting them to test the weight and feel of it in his hand. He usuallypreferred choosing his own quills, but in this too Basil had managed perfectly.It was the blue quill he still held when he tugged a blank sheet of paper fromthe pile at the corner of the table to write on.
Dear Basil,
My deepest gratitude for yourthoughtful gift. It is indeed a very helpful thing to have a place to write mythoughts… whatever I might do with them afterward. And I know that I willthink of you whenever I pen them into the pages of this journal. It may not bethe same as your conversation or counsel, but I think it will be soothing regardless.
Please thank Know for the use of hisfeather as well, it makes a wonderful quill and I think my thoughts will findtheir way easily onto the paper with its help.
He paused amoment, staring down at what he had written, so formal and carefully wordedwhen perhaps if the priest had been there in person he’d have given him a hug.And the words didn’t touch on any of his other thoughts or worries thatcentered around the little redhead. Vaelanys sighed, running his finger tipsover the journal beside him once more before the quill returned to the paper.
You have been a very dear friend tome, even in the short time we have known each other and when I say thank you,it is not only for this very apt and lovely gift, but also for the soothingwarmth of your heart and the depth of the care you have for others. I hope youhave a wonderful Holiday, and that the year tocome is brighter than the one that is departing.
Sincerest Gratitude,
-Vaelanys
Mistletoe kiss 0v0
The lasttime he’d had Basil anywhere near the holiday mistletoe the priest had ended upstammering and running off on him before they’d even really finished theirconversation, and certainly before he’d had a chance for the mistletoe kissthat Taelathin found he rather wanted.
So thistime when he caught up with the smaller redhead for a walk, Taelathin had madesure to distract him. With conversation and a game of ‘who can find the mostholiday glitter on the streets?’ that was designed to keep Basil’s eyes on thestreet rather than looking up. Perhaps it was a dirty trick, but any hunterknew that you used whatever you had to in order to catch the particularlyelusive prey.
He was alittle surprised the game had worked, but someone had had some sort of partywith favors full of little shaped paper cut outs and even he had almost gottencaught up in seeing what he could spot. Almost.
Basil waswinning, but he’d found what he wanted too. “How about a nice cup of hotcider or cocoa or something?” He suggested casually, reaching for thepriest’s arm to gently draw him into the doorway of a little shop.
It was inthe doorway he paused, turning and reaching out with his free hand to cup Basil’scheek and tip his face up. He leaned in before he had given the priest muchtime to react, pressing a brief and very gentle kiss on his lips before pullingaway. His thumb trailed once acrossBasil’s cheek before he lifted the hand to point up at the mistletoe hanging inthe arch of the doorway.
"Mistletoerules, love.“ His lips parted into a warm and rather fond grin as helooked down at the priest. "Happy Winter Veil, Basil.”
Thistle, Yew
Thistle: What’s one time your character has been angry andharsh with someone?
Yew: What makes your character sad?
DearSyrothas,
Inever was a great man for writing, you know that. But then it’s not like you’llbe reading this where you’ve gone anyway so I don’t suppose it much matters.Somehow sitting here tonight I find myself wanting to talk to you and this isas close as I’m likely to come. So here it goes. I’ve thought a lot about thelast day I saw you, about the things we both said. I’m not likely ever toforget them with your words burned into my brain and the way you looked, allfire and pain and eyes like jewels.
SometimesI stop and think about what I’d do if I had it all to do over again. But whatI’d like to think I’d do when I’m lying wrapped in blankets and half asleep isa lot calmer than either of us was then. I said a lot of angry things I didn’tmean. I called you a betrayer and a coward and a list of other things I don’teven want to remember. I’ve regretted them almost every day since. I try totell myself that you feel the same, that those harsh words came out of pain andanger and you didn’t mean them either.
Butit’s hard to know. There’s some years between us and then, now. There’s time tothink and I think sometimes about how I’d like to run into you again. What I’dsay. It’s mostly here in this letter. I think I still love you, though I am notsure it’s the same. But mostly, I’m sorry for that day and I wish that I couldtake it back.
-Taelathin
He hadalmost missed it. Snow was a thing that shone in rainbows of colors, strikingsparks like jewels and dazzling the eyes. Taelathin squinted against it fromwhere he crouched beside the tattered remains of an Alliance banner, running a gloved hand overthe fur between Brightspark’s ears. But there again, just when he tilted hishead was a flash of blue that seemed a little too consistent for the dancinglight on the snow.
He andthe lynx picked their careful way toward that sparkle, stepping around thebodies and broken blades half frozen into the ground. There’d been some sort ofa little warband by the look of it cornered maybe, surrounded and overpoweredby the Scourge. Even if they hadbeen Alliance Taelathin couldn’t find it in himself to exult in their demise.
There.Something small, silver and blue under the snow. He crouched, scraping at itwith a glove and then with the blade of the hunting knife from his belt whenthe frozen ground withstood his touch. His breath left him when he couldfinally see and lift the small pendant from the snow. “Oh no…” Hewhispered and Brightspark nudged the top of his head against his arm.
He knewthe piece as well as he knew the one he wore around his own neck, both twin andopposite. It shone silver bright against the dark leather palm of his glove, asmall cat with sapphire eyes curled into a lotus blossom. The chain that hadcome up with it was broken.
Hewasn’t sure how long he had stayed crouched there, staring down into the eyes ofthe pendant. Long enough that his fingers had started to numb and his knees hadgone stiff before he finally moved. He tucked the necklace into the pouch athis side, frowning as his fingers rustled a sheet of folded paper.
Hetugged the letter out of his pouch, stared down at it for a while withoutunfolding it. He knew what he’d written there and carried with him for years incase he ever found a place to send it or familiar hands to put it into. There was no need to carry itany more. Setting it down where the pendant had been he watched the wind pickit up, unfold it and carry it away with the drifting snow, one more thing lostto the cold of Icecrown.
"Let’sgo find a fire, Brightspark. I’m cold through.“
What color is your heart (Aye, I get one for Heryn, he does one for me |3)
For Heryneth:
Orange, Purple, and Green
Crush: Heryn has a bit of a thing for gentle priests. Pretty gentle priests who patch him up when he’s hurting and talk gently to him when he’s pretty close to afraid especially. Not surprising at all really that he’s got a little bit of a crush on Basil.
Sexual Desire: That thing for pretty, gentle priests is definitely not a platonic thing. Basil is pretty and looks like he’d blush and Heryn likes blushes.
Friendship: They don’t really know each other but the evening they met one person talked to him in a warm and friendly way and believed what he had to say. Heryn hasn’t forgotten that and he’d considered the Basil a friend if he saw him again.
For Nightingale:
Orange, Purple, and Multicolor
Infatuation: Basil is a pretty little priest who makes delightful faces and seems open and unguarded. Nightingale definitely likes that. He likes it a lot.
Sexual Desire: Basil is pretty and seems so innocent and blushes so prettily. He reacts so openly over even something as simple as music that Nightingale thinks he’d be a lot of fun to play with.
Amusement: Nightingale’s amusement in this case definitely holds less connotation of humor and more cat watching a mouse that doesn’t know it’s cornered yet.
