Tax Dollars At Work (Warhammer OC Backstory— Konrad Curze x OC)
FINALLY getting around to doing Lyra’s backstory story. This is the first part; mostly to set the scene for the circumstances. No NSFW at all.
Lyra sighed at the screen before her. She stared at the message with the official seal of Ultramar.
From the Office of Pmc. Roboute Guilliman…
It had been forwarded by her supervisor, which had been forwarded to them by the higher ups.
To: Mental Health Services of MG-2858JQ
While the Imperium commends you for your acts of service over the last several decades, Ultramar continues to pursue changes for your planet as well as several others under its control. Though you have sent us several letters urging us to reconsider these plans, Primarch Guilliman will be continuing to the restructuring efforts.
The Primarch, and Ultramar, apologize for any hardships this may cause you and your loved ones in the following weeks.
Lyra slammed her fist on the table. No no no no no, she thought. All the letters, all of the collaborative effort - not just by her clinic, but by other clinics on the planet and elsewhere - unheard. Ultramar was scheduled to pull ALL mental health funding for MG-2858JQ before the end of this cycle, which was only two weeks away.
She and many others had been writing, pleading for reconsideration. Many people have found respite with the counseling and medications provided through their clinic. Many could not obtain these services elsewhere, as they were all government-funded. Any other providers who were unaffected would be charging out the nose for the same care.
Lyra and her supervisor believed some of this had to do with some up-and-coming Ultramarines who had decided to seek services. While many of them still were committed to serving the Imperium, a few decided to go elsewhere. She did not know what their plans were, but the clinic had heard through the grapevine that some of them had caught the eye of Primarch Guilliman personally.
Many believed this was retribution for costing him more soldiers.
“Did you see the message?” Her boss, Ophelia, stood at her desk holding two cups of recaff. She handed one to Lyra, who took it.
“All these people, they just don't’ care,” Lyra said, sipping from the cup.
“Have you started looking for work elsewhere?”
“Yes, but our skillset doesn’t exactly match up with other jobs in the Imperium,” Lyra replied.
“A friend of mine has managed to set me up with something controlled by Fenris.”
“Space Wolf territory?”
“I know you hate winter, so I wouldn’t suggest it.”
Lyra cocked a brow. “How cold?”
“Colder than you’d like, trust me.”
“Surprising that Fenris would want counseling services.”
“Well, not exactly the same way. It’s a lot more motivational interviewing; screening process, and also to keep their pups in line.”
“How’s that going to work?”
“Don’t know. I’ll make it work, if anything. Maybe marry one and settle down.”
“You’d live on such a cold planet, Ophelia? And just be fine with that?” Lyra took several warm sips from her up, still shivering at the thought of eternal winter.
“I mean… my ex was from Ultramar, remember? I’m used to that life, somewhat.”
“I’m surprised he didn’t try to put in a word on your behalf.”
“He did, actually. But Lord Guilliman only cares about numbers, and statistical evidence. But you know what the real reason is.”
“Do you think he’d decide to do something so drastic for a few recruits?”
“Absolutely! He’s a Primarch - the man can do whatever he wants, however he wants. All to make daddy happy.”
Lyra lowered her voice. “Shhh, don’t talk about the Emperor like that so loudly.”
“I mean, at this rate, he is the one taking the funding from us. We can’t be a little bitter about it, Lyr?”
“When do you move?” Lyra asked, finishing the last of her recaff.
“End of the week. You guys will be on your own for the last one, not that it matters. Tie up loose ends, clean your offices, say good-bye to your patients and each other.”
The two were quiet for several moments.
“I’ve heard a few are gonna try going to Ultramar to see if the Primarch will listen to them directly.”
“That will be interesting,” Lyra said, tossing the cup into the trash bin.
“If they’re not shot and killed first for demanding an audience, so my ex says. Guilliman is very appointment-based. And if somehow they do let them in, there’s a possibility he’ll be out somewhere fighting anyway. So who do they talk to?”
Lyra shrugged. “Maybe one of his firsts in command?”
Ophelia scoffed. “You think they care about anything we’re doing? They’ve a better chance of being with him, too. They’d probably get some flunky — who has no power at all— to waste an afternoon and hear the endless complaints. And then a week later, we all get another ‘we regret to inform you’ message.”
“It’s foolish, but I hope it gets somewhere,” Lyra said, twirling her pen now.
“But at this point, what do you think they could even accomplish?” Ophelia asked, somewhat sarcastically as she threw her cup away as well.
“A few months more maybe?”
“To do what? If they’re still going to shut things down here, it’s just a few more months to look for new jobs elsewhere.”
“That’s better than nothing, isn’t it?”
“I guess, but that’s not exactly saving anything,’ Ophelia looked down at Lyra, a remorseful expression on her face. ‘If you change your mind about Fenris, let me know before the end of the week, okay?” Her supervisor’s tone had softened some.
“It’s unlikely, but I’ll let you know. And thanks. Not just for that, but for the few years I’ve been working here.”
Ophelia looked as if she was about to cry. “I’m going to miss this place,’ she said, refocusing on the conversation. ‘Even though it’s been challenging to love it some days.”
She left Lyra to finish the progress notes she had up on the screen. Several of their patients had ended services early, learning of the announcement, but a few still remained.
She pressed the call button to let the secretary know to send in her last client of the day.

ʚɞ pt 1 (hopefully). sae x fem!reader. backstory. kinda angst? childhood friends to strangers. w/c 752
You, Sae and Rin. You guys were practically inseparable.
Of course, the two brothers were obsessed with soccer, while you just enjoyed looking from the sideline. You were their little cheerleader, and while you were the same age as Sae, you tended to act more childish like Rin. Your life was good; it was happy. I mean, you had two people supporting you everywhere you went.
That was before Sae left. You were happy for him, of course… I mean, you tried to be happy—but this news still had a huge impact on Rin’s life. After Sae left, Rin would only focus on being the best in Japan, better than his older brother. So in merely a week, your entire life was thrown upside down. You decided that you would also focus on your future career. Which barely existed at that point. Nonetheless, you figured things out, you and Rin would talk from time to time and Sae… well you choose to leave him as a mere memory.
You worked towards modelling, and to your surprise, It worked. It had its ups and downs but still, it was something you enjoyed, something to work towards, something that finally felt stable in your life. For once in a really long time, you were happy again, things seemed more… normal. After weeks of waiting you had also heard back from one of the top companies in Japan. You were going to be signed under them, you were going to be able to do new things.
You decided to go over to the Itoshi’s house to tell Rin and his parents. Which were like your second pair. The good news. It was dark and cold and snowflakes fell from the clouds like little flecks of glitter. You shoved your hands into the pocket of your fluffy pink jacket. Your designer snow boots make a crunch with every step. You continued down, even passing the familiar soccer field from your childhood and… it was like you could see Sae and Rin standing there just like before….
Wait.
What the fuck?
You swatted the snow off your hair, trying to get a better view of what you were or were not seeing right now. But no, they were both there, in the middle of the snow with a soccer ball between them. Sae had his suitcase beside him, and Rin lay on the snow-covered ground looking up at him. You could swear his eyes glistened as brightly as the white surrounding him. You attempted to get close enough to pick up on what they were talking about, and when you found a half-decent hiding spot to stay and watched.
Your eyes widened as you heard the harsh words fall from Sae’s lips. You had never thought Sae would be this… cold. Yes as children he wasn't some perfect, sunshine child, but he was caring and kind. Telling his brother to quit soccer, that the fact that Rin played soccer for only him made him sick, that just wasn't the Sae you know… Knew?
It hit you hard that you didn't in fact know Sae like you used to, It wasn't completely impossible that he was different, It had been three maybe four years since he left. Of course, he wasn't going to be the same young boy you grew fondly of.
At this point you had completely blocked out their conversation, your attention was only brought back when Sae started running down the field. He was getting a little too close to your current hiding spot. You quickly got up, trying to make a run for the house, planning to pretend you never heard anything.
Yet while you left you could swear you felt eyes staring into the back of your head. You shook it off. Eventually making it to the Itoshi’s house, and waited for Rin to come back from whatever he and his older brother were doing. After that you went with your normal plan, telling them you had gotten a spot in your dream company. You all celebrate, of course, Rin acted like everything was fine and so did you.
It was your night, you had finally gotten your life to the point where it meant something. So, you decided to pretend like Sae didn't even exist anymore. Just like how he did with you when he left for Spain.
Plus it's not like he would plan to talk to you like he did with Rin, you were now living an Itoshi Sae-free life…
