For Some Reason Nobody's Ever Tested for Heavy Metals in Tampons Before, and the Results Are Alarming
Researchers found concentrations of all metals tested - there is no “safe” level for any of the metals researchers tested for, the study said.
Although the metal levels varied based on a number of factors, including whether the tampons were from the United States or Europe and whether they were organic or not, "no category had consistently lower concentrations of all or most metals," the press release notes.
For example, organic tampons had lower lead concentrations than non-organic, but were found to be higher in arsenic.
Toxic metals are particularly dangerous if they come into direct contact with the vagina, where they are more easily absorbed. Chronic metal absorption has been linked to increased risk of dementia, cancer, infertility, and other health issues.
Ultimately, the onus lies with menstrual product manufacturers to get it right, but chemical testing is not part of the legal requirements for tampons in either the United States or Europe.
"It would be exciting to see the public call for this," researcher Shearston said in the press release, "or to ask for better labeling on tampons and other menstrual products."
So the credits are rolling and holy hell is this movie epic. Two little things health related and not spoiler at all.
1: In the first half hour there is quite a bit of shooting with a lot of flashing. I don't have epilepsie but stuff like that makes me wonky in the head so keep that in mind when watching in the first half hour.
2: This movie is really heavy on the eyes with the 3D effect. If you're already not good with 3D effects then be prepared to deal with painful eyes.
