As a “deaf” merman, Hearth can´t catch the waves mermaids use to comunicate. He isn´t able to sing and hunt sailors or seals either. He is basiclly useless for his people, and he ends up being thrown away of his colony. He wanders for days and maybe weeks, almost unable to eat. One day, he is to tired to notice the boat over him. He suddenly gets caught in a web, and desesperately tries to swim away, only getting even more stuck and chocked. He rips some parts of the web with his teeth and claws and manages to escape. He is hungry, tired, hurted and lost.
A man named Blitzen finds him the next day, laying half-dead next to the beach he had been pushed to. Blitzen, knowing that he couldn´t just let him die, decides to take him home.

Hearth wakes up inside an aquarium. There are some fishes around him, and even when his tail is damaged, manages to eat some. Blitzen comes back with some more. “Oh, so you liked them? Take these too, I fished them for you”
They spend some weeks together. Blitzen googles “mermaid facts” to know how to take care of him, and comunicate (Hearth doesn´t even try). Hearth just eats everything he can and heals, waiting for the day he can jump out of the aquarium and eat Blitzen too.
One day, Blitzen knows that he has to free Hearth. He was healthy again, but terribly oppressed by the aquarium. It makes him a little bit sad, but he has to. Blitzen is not dumb tho. He knows Hearth will bite him, so he waits until midnight and gives him a somniferous. Then he carries the sleeping merman to the beach, and when he starts to wake up, he leaves hin in the water. Hearth is a little bit confused, but with a hiss, he soon swims away.
Blitzen comes back to the beach everyday in his diary walk. He quite misses Hearth. Maybe he wasn´t too talkative, but it was something interesting in Blitzen´s life. He really wants to see him again. One day, he spots him, peeking out, but he soon dissapears. Blitzen spots him a few more times during that month.
It takes a long time, but they end getting close. Blitzen notices Hearth has problems hunting, so he leaves him a bucket with fishes everytime he can. they meet in the beach at night, and eventually, Hearth teaches him the MSL (mermaid sign lenguage), getting closer and closer.
