Okay, so this is a kind of out-of-the-blue request, and I’m not sure whether any of my followers would be able to help, or whether this will reach people who could, but I figure it’s at least worth a try.
This is year I have a fairly heavily hearing-impaired student in one of my classes. She has hearing aids, and a microphone device thing I can wear around my neck which connects to them, and I’ve been told she’s fairly okay with lip reading, but I was still wondering if anyone had any advice for any adjustments I should make in teaching her class- especially as this is an ESL class, so I’m speaking in a language they’re still studying. I’m trying to keep in mind the basics, like keeping my face in her line of sight when I’m addressing the students (tricky at times because she’s at the back of the class), but are there any specific activities and stuff I should avoid? (Eg. I’m thinking having them make skits wouldn’t be a great idea, unless that class did them more like skit-type interviews where they could pass the microphone around.) Is it still okay to split the class and have them do group discussions/debates? I’ve never come across the special microphone thing before, so I have no idea how effective they are.
