Background?
I'm from Wolbach, NE. It's a couple hours west with a population of 280 or so. I grew up like a lot of small town kids; I was either outside, in a car, or in a bar. And there was always a radio on. I spent a lot of time with my grandpa. He unknowingly influenced me to love beautiful voices. I grew up listening to Hank Williams and Patsy Cline. The only reason I ever believed that I could make music on my own was my mom. She sings like a bird and plays a few chords on the guitar. That's all you need to play old-timey country.
How'd you get into music?
I spent a few years trying to write indie bullshit, then eventually gave up and went back to my roots. I tapped into those old songs. I was not trying to break the mold. I wanted to write songs that would fit in with a thousand other old songs. Some say that, in doing so, I came up with my own style.
Does feminism play a role in your work?
Feminism plays a role in my music, in the way that a woman can be whatever the hell she wants. She can be delicate. She can be strong. She can be mean. And she can be beautiful. But she's always unabashedly a woman.
What are you performing at this event?
I think I'm gonna do three rounds down by Matt Cox. I kinda like singing tough manly man songs as a smallish, somewhat delicate-looking woman. I suppose it's the same reason I cover lots of Merle Haggard and Johnny Cash. I'm not sure why...
