I LOOOOOOVE this question! In 2000 I was born with pulmonary stenosis which in my case meant my pulmonary valve was sealed shut when I was born and needed immediate attention. The docs basically saved me at the last second, but unfortunately gave me a side effect of having a pulmonary valve that was slowly failing.

2014 I had my first open heart surgery (hence the chest scars) to replace said valve. The two lines under my chest were from the drainage tubes. These were fun cus I had them both removed while I was awake and was slowly weaned off of pain meds.

Due to it slowly failing, which was expected, I had another heart surgery in 2022 where I'm currently on my second valve. Unfortunately I'll have to sort of repeat this process ever 10ish years.

Malachi Barton x Sister!Reader

The steady beeping of the hospital monitor filled the room.

You slowly blinked your eyes open, your chest aching from the surgery. Everything felt heavy and tired.

The doctors had told you the heart surgery had gone well, but that didn't make recovery any easier.

You glanced around the room.

Mom had stepped out for coffee.

The nurse had just left.

For a moment, you were alone.

Then the door opened quietly.

"Hey, squirt."

You immediately recognized the voice.

"Malachi?"

Your older brother stepped into the room with a small smile, carrying a stuffed animal and a bag of snacks.

"You made it," you whispered.

"Of course I did."

He pulled a chair beside your bed and sat down.

"You really thought I'd miss seeing my favorite sister?"

You raised an eyebrow.

"I'm your only sister."

"Details."

Despite how sore you felt, you laughed.

Malachi's smile softened.

Truthfully, he looked exhausted.

His eyes were red, like he hadn't slept much.

"You okay?" you asked.

He looked away for a second.

"Yeah."

"Liar."

A sigh escaped him.

"You scared me."

Your heart squeezed.

Malachi wasn't usually the emotional one.

He was always joking around.

Always making everyone laugh.

Seeing him like this made you realize how worried he'd been.

"When Mom called and said they were taking you into surgery..." His voice cracked slightly. "I couldn't stop thinking about all the things that could go wrong."

You reached for his hand.

"I'm okay."

"I know."

His fingers squeezed yours.

"But that doesn't mean I wasn't terrified."

The room grew quiet.

For a moment neither of you said anything.

Then Malachi stood and carefully placed the stuffed animal on your bed.

It was a ridiculously oversized teddy bear.

You laughed.

"Seriously?"

"What?"

"It's bigger than me."

"Exactly."

You rolled your eyes.

"You're impossible."

"And you're stuck with me."

He gently ruffled your hair.

The same way he always had since you were little.

"Besides," he said, his voice softer now, "I need you around."

You felt tears sting your eyes.

"Really?"

"Obviously."

He smiled.

"Who else is gonna annoy me every day?"

You laughed through your tears.

"You're the worst."

"Yeah, but I'm your brother."

Malachi leaned over and carefully hugged you, making sure not to hurt your chest.

The hug was gentle.

Protective.

Like he was just grateful you were still here.

When he pulled away, his eyes were shining.

"I'm really glad you're okay."

You squeezed his hand.

"I'm glad you're here."

His smile returned.

"Always."

sometimes i think about how 1 in 100 kids are born with heart defects. about how 25% of kids born with heart defects have a severe enough defect to need surgery in their first year. and then i think about how 31% of kids with critical heart defects don't make it to adulthood. and then i think about how i had surgery when i was 8 days old. and then i think about how they gave my parents a 15% that i wouldn't make it. and then i think about how i did make it. over and over again. how statistics are improving each year, how we're finding out what the complications are when a kid with a heart defect grows old because we get to grow old now. about how heart surgery is developing so quickly and how we're even moving away from surgery and into interventional cardiology. how we can create 3D models of hearts and use robots during surgery and figure it out better solutions than we had when i was born 22 years ago, or what we had 30, 40, and 60 years ago when heart surgery was just starting up. and how that's pretty damn cool
