A drowning - how to destroy Angels
Rolo floated aimlessly atop the surface of the cool water, drifting the top, as would a leaf that had just landed from a majestic dance in the breeze. The boy let his eyes lift open, squinting when the blazing sun caught inside, and relaxing to focus on the fragile clouds that lingered above. He noticed a few distant birds, and watched them for a moment, watched their flame-like beauty as they recited the carefully learned movements to play in the wind- the birds flew high into the heavens, until they seemed to fall upwards, then, with a casual flap of the wing, dove with an acceleration far greater than that of a falling stone. They fell with breathless speeds to the west, spitefully, without effort, against the wind which tried to drive them to the east.
Rolo let a sigh, a pleasured smile taking his face. The sun’s rays glazed his skin, juxtaposing the cool water below. An indistinct noise was soon heard and the boy recognized the melodic tune immediately. It was the locket’s song that bestowed it’s sweet kiss to Rolo’s ears, and his eyes became blurred from tears, near ecstasy from the blissful tranquility.
He drew a deep, brisk breath, and the waves began to rock him, shifting him slightly, gently up and down. When the boy took a relieving blink, he noticed more clouds had filled the sky, enclosing the sun from all directions, and the wind had become stronger. Rolo watched in silent agony as the sun disappeared behind a swarm of something distant. He was left in nothing but cold, and the waves were becoming harsher, now battering his sides and invading his face. The boy receded from his back, wading cautiously in the eerie water, looking around to see if there was any sign of ocean’s end.
Rolo was now frantic and continued circling and searching all directions, the waves bigger, rougher, rays of sun fading and appearing in different places. He spontaneously started losing strength and the clothes on his back weighed him down unnaturally. The boy started gasping for air as his head was momentarily sent below the tide, and struggled to remain at the surface. Eventually, the waves and weight became unbearable, his neck arched back so his mouth could stay afloat, still wheezing and coughing for air. The locket’s song rung all around, lingering in his subconscious, burdening his aching bones and thrashing his withered senses.
A wave crashed over him and he sunk downwards, inadvertently opening his eyes and saw only darkness. Cold and unforgiving, just ruthless loneliness and he desperately swam to the surface once again. Rolo was relentlessly swayed and battered, and he wished one more time to see something of care, of love. He forced his eyes open, still gasping indefinitely.
Before the boy stood Lelouch, dawned in the most benevolent attire of white and silky gold, and an expression of assurance, of the love Rolo’s mind and vision craved most. His muscles ached, strained, longed for relief, but more so his thoughts- even they were rendered speechless in such a sight- were what drove him to stay above the darkness. The song continued to ring unfaltering around him, yet Lelouch appeared entirely unaffected by his surroundings, towering above the boy. Even a faint, heavenly light seemed to envelope his body.
The weight beared down heavier, and Rolo’s entire body toiled to stay in his brother’s presence. Lelouch knelt to his brother, reaching a hand out slowly, and placing it softly on his cheek, resting it there. The prince’s face was doused in reassuring serenity, but the boy’s strength had exhausted entirely, his striving failed, and he gave into his weakness, seemingly pulled into the dark loneliness beneath the waves.
He was mortified at the departure of Lelouch’s shielding touch, which had sustained him only a little longer. A grip came to Rolo’s leg, pulling him down faster, and he no longer saw anything. He let out his air, and toiled for more.
Rolo awoke with a start, gasping immediately for air, as though he’d forgotten to breath. He calmed his heart down easily for a moment, clutching to the heart locket inadvertently. The boy took one final deep breath before shifting from the side onto his back. He stared at the ceiling, and shut his eyes for a moment, realizing where he was, the peace that the world allowed him for now. Rolo turned his head to look at Lelouch, sleeping beside Suzaku with immense tranquility. The boy smiled and sat up, gazing intently at his brother, who laid in the moon’s heavenly rays. 'Nii-San… I don't think I can be saved, but… thank you… for being there with me, or I surely would have been scared.'Rolo reached a hand out slowly, and placed it on his cheek, resting it there.
lyrics: A drowning
It’s the glare from the reflectionMaking patterns in your eyesIt’s the looking back in angerWith every second slipping byUndertow has come to take meGot it by the blazing sunLook at everything around usAnd look at everything we’ve donePlease, anyoneI don’t think I can save myselfI’m drowning hereThere’s a tiny little windowSwarms of locust fill the skyMaybe I just disappearIf I can keep my head above the tidePlease, anyoneI don’t think I can save myselfI’m drowning here
