My Nana used to repair jeans with patch hearts, so when my mom asked me to fix her horse riding jeans she kept bringing up the heart patches. She wanted her jeans to have a heart on them, like her mama used to do for her when she was younger.
I should have asked my mom about how Nana did it before I tried as I definitely made things a little harder on myself.
Cutting out a heart patch, easy. Hemming a patch heart, hard. Turns out Nana didn’t hem her patches but instead used a zigzag stitch on her machine to sew everything down. Not sure how she kept them from fraying that way or if fraying was part of their charm 🤷🏻♀️
I hand sewed a layer of muslin to stabilize the surrounding fabric and give me something to stitch down the loose edges to before hand stitching the heart patch on over the top.
I am proud of how I did, and I learned a few lessons on how to do it better and faster next time.
