      Iridescent wings beat against the ashen bones of her ribs, feverishly frenzied by the closeness at which the PRINCESS stood. In a quiet moment, when the world had not seemed as vast, balancing on the edge of a precipice, they shared bow techniques. Zelda’s aim, her speed, it was IMPRESSIVE. Yet another aspect of the young woman that had Fox endlessly fascinated. None as all-encompassing as the small smile playing across the pink hue of her lips. Time split in two. There was only before Zelda smiled and after, and oh, how BRIGHT the world felt after, how weightless.

      The entirety of the world blurred. There was no landscape, only washes of colors contrasting against the vibrancy of the Princess. No wind caressed her as softly as the petals of their lips did. A betrayal of Fox’s own body as she leaned in, closing the gap between their mouths. Tasting the smile she was too intoxicated on to register or change her own actions. Sudden and brief and WONDROUS. As quick and as cutting as an arrow finding its mark or the bounce of a bowstring, they parted. Fox stumbling away, creating distance where there should’ve always been. It was WRONG to do as she had done. Such an UNHOLY act to place a kiss upon one as HOLY as she. Beneath freckles, her cheeks burned red. Gaze ripping from the beauty of Zelda’s face to find the dirt, apologies pouring out to water the grass while her heart THUNDERED above.

      “Forgive me,” Fox sputtered as another step away was taken. “I did not mean -- " How as she supposed to explain the feelings jumbled in both her head and her heart? That the attachment she felt for the other had grown much stronger than mere friendship, but that she felt unworthy of ever allowing it to become thus. How was Fox to compare to the petals and feathered wings and soft growing things? “I’m sorry, Zel.” How was she supposed to explain that she believed Zelda deserved SO MUCH MORE.

𝐀𝐧 𝐨𝐟𝐭 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐬𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐡𝐞 𝐡𝐚𝐬 𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐝 𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐯𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐚𝐬𝐬𝐮𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐩𝐨𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐚𝐬 𝐂𝐡𝐢𝐞𝐟 𝐉𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐞. Repeated far more often in recent days than he cares to count. It’s strange. For all that he has built these walls between himself and the rest of Fontaine, still have those around him managed find the cracks upon its exterior. He wonders at what point he’d allowed this to happen and should he chastise himself for being so careless.

These people see a man caught in the ever ceaseless current of trials and the day to day responsibilities required of him and think him a man drowning beneath a sea of paperwork. When in truth, the administrative duties are the least of his troubles. It comes to him as second nature especially when he has a host of gestionnaires to delegate many of the more tedious and less pertinent matters.

And yet… he cannot help but believe when Chlorinde speaks to him now, that there is more to her offer. That whatever lies within her heart, whatever sentiment that has spurred her on, has little to do with his work. Behind him is the soft patter of rain against the window, the grey light of afternoon waning as the day progresses. Yet another unexpected forecast though he supposes, if one were to pay attention to the scheduled trials for the day, then one might have expected this outcome. What lays before him now are the last of the papers for the case. One final signature and it too along with so many others will be filed and stored away. Forgotten by many save for him. At that moment he wishes for nothing more than to cross into that rain. But there is his work. And his duty.

“Thank you, Chlorinde.” His pen finishes its last loop across the final line. The usual rejection and reassurances as to his emotional and physical health coalescing upon his thoughts. Coming as routine to him as the paperwork. But his gaze drifts once more to the rain, to the trial and the victims who have had their lives shattered in irreparable ways. And he rises, chair sliding back. “I think… I should like to take a walk. And I would very much be pleased if you could accompany me.”

      Fox wiped her hands on her apron and smiled at the purplish stains that were left behind. A track of blackberry juice and dirt. Punctuated by the smallest dots of red where her fingers had been caught by the thin thorns along the plants. It was hard to feel the pain, for her heart was too full. She hadn’t known the plant could thrive here nor that it grew wildly, but not that she did she was thinking of all the things she could do with them.

      Popping one in her mouth, she enjoyed the sweet, nearly sour, burst of the berry on her tongue. “Have you ever had these,” she asked without turning. “You can make pies, wines, jams, there are so many things I can do that you are sure to be sick of them soon.”

      “Zeno’s arrow never hits the mark, it’s always hanging there over it’s shadow, safe from battle.” The ranger nocked another arrow, fingers grazing over the grey fetching lovingly. The bow was more than a weapon, it was as much an instrument as a lute was for a bard. “Waste of archer’s time and trouble, waste of effort, waste of parts.” Her arm pulled back, muscles relaxing at the familiar position. Within the time frame of a breath the arrow was flying across the crisp, autumn sky. Embedding in the heart of a  defenseless straw dummy. With a small, self satisfied smile, Fox turned toward Vidic, passing the next arrow to him. “If you don’t aim for the center, it’s a waste of the art. Give it a try?”
