𝗗𝗮𝘆 𝟴 𝗼𝗳 𝗖𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗻 𝗖𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗿 𝗔𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗠𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗵: In October, the USPSTF recommended that screening for colorectal cancer should begin at age 45 years old instead of 50. I was happy...for a moment then I got in my feelings and said to myself, thats it? Only 45. My mom was 45 when she died from colon cancer and Chadwick Boseman was 43. Not to mention the rising incidence of people under the age of 45 that are being diagnosed daily...Why only 45? Of course I'm not a medical professional so I was just relishing in my feelings of bitterness with a slight care for the reasoning behind the age recommendation. I saw post from others celebrating this "victory," but I couldn't. I woke up this morning and something my mom always said to me came to mind.. She would always tell me to be happy for small wins because small wins is progress and create momentum towards achieving bigger wins. Tears began to roll down my face because I thought about the day she received the phone call that she was 1 year cancer free. Her test/scans came back clear and she was so happy. She said to me "1 year down, 4 more to go". We were told that if you go 5 years cancer free that you are considered in remission and every year the chance of your cancer returning lowers. To her, that was a win and we celebrated her victory. Unfortunately, that same year her cancer returned, but its those small wins that I continue to thrive on because they created some of our happiest memories. So I say all that to say, yes - I wish there was no age requirement or that it wouldn't be as difficult for young adults to get screened. I woke up convicted this morning, and my spirit says that was my mom reminding me what she always enforced in me. So I now choose to bask in the victory of the USPSTF's recommendation while being optimistic that this is only the beginning for more wins to come. 💙 Remember, colon cancer doesn't care about age, race or gender. 𝗗𝗮𝘆 𝟳 𝗼𝗳 𝗖𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗻 𝗖𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗿 𝗔𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗠𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗵 16 years ago today I left work early and rushed to the hospital because a routine doctor's appointment for my mother turned into her being rushed to the hospital. I walked in when the doctor was speaking and to my dismay, I listened to the doctor tell my mom she only had days to live...She died 10 days later from Colon Cancer. Colon Cancer, an illness once called "the old person's" disease is touching the lives of many, young and old. My mom was only 45 at the time of her death. I wanted her here, need her here, wish she was here everyday, but God had other plans. I know she is with me always, but it's nothing like a mothers physical presence. Rewind to this day 1 year ago. @felitaslove had to pleasure to connect with some amazing people for an amazing cause at the Hearts 4 Blue Colon Cancer Brunch. Fight Colorectal Cancer Ambassadors, Ronnie & Sherri Ard educated attendees on Colorectal Cancer, Grace shared her Colon Cancer journey and survivor story, and the highlight was honoring a beautiful soul, Tiffany Ortiz who at the time was fighting Stage 4 Colon Cancer. March 7th holds meaning and will forever be a day marked with pain and purpose. The death of my mom birthed my pain and my pain birthed my purpose. As long as I have breath in me my moms legacy will live. I will always share her story and encourage you to GET YOUR BUTT CHECKED! Remember, Colon cancer doesn't care about age, race or gender. 14 days until year 16. 16 years since my mom died from colon cancer at 45. My grandfather use to say "a parent should never have to bury a child." I agree... and everyday I wish the child he buried was not my mom. #ColonCancerSucks Today is Day 3 of Colon Cancer Awareness Month. Doctors are seeing more and more colon cancer diagnoses in younger adults. My mom was 45 when she died from colon cancer. At the time of her death, the age for colon cancer screenings was 50. Today the recommended age to begin screenings is 45. However, I have met several people under the age of 45, including children who have been diagnosed with colon cancer. Heartbreaking.
