‘ you have my whole heart. you always did. ’ <3 ( max to chloe )
the rain is a constant reminder of the world surrounding chloe, the beating of drums upon her skin, telling her that she exists. for now, anyway. her eyes drill into max’s, and in her hand she’s holding a picture from a lifetime – lifetimes – ago. the blue butterfly, resting innocuously upon a pail. it’s ironic, really, that the symbol of little changes to the past causing massive differences in the future was the catalyst for saving arcadia bay. the flap of one butterfly’s wings can cause a hurricane… in other words, the butterfly effect. chloe knows, for certain, that she was the root cause of everything. the universe, up until this point, has continuously attempted to return nature to its balance – and to do so meant her death.
it didn’t bother her.
really, she was fine with it.
this… has to happen. it’s the only option.
she’s trembling. the beating of the rain atop her skin is no longer felt, nor the rapid winds of the whirling hurricane. still, she cannot stop herself from shaking. tears blur with raindrops, and her voice keeps catching in her throat. god, this was the only outcome, the ending that they’d been headed towards this entire time. so why does she feel so small? so scared, drowned out by the storm surrounding them. she cannot scream, or cry, or plead for anything else. she’ll just stop existing. she gets no last hurrah, no swansong, no farewell. we’re all alone in the universe, she tells herself. and we’re all alone in death, too.
and then max takes the photo, and chloe’s heart stops, for a moment. a split second, where the rain is no longer beating, the winds are still, and the lightning does not flash. there’s only the two of them, together in the world. max smiles.
‘ you have my whole heart. you always did. ’ her voice is nearly swallowed by the roaring of the storm. with the last word she breathes, she tears the photo in half, once, twice… and then there was only one option, the only outcome. standing side by side, all they can do is watch the storm engulf arcadia bay, holding each other in their arms.
there’s time, later, to rummage through the rubble the storm reduces their city to. there’s time, later, to see what destruction max’s decision has wrought. there will always be more time. chloe vaguely wonders if she’s worth the lives of all the people who are certain to die here, if her existence is anything compared to the weight of a hundred graves. she wonders if there are other max’s in other arcadia bay’s who chose to return and fix the impending doom and restore balance to the universe.
this choice was an impossible one, something that no ordinary person could ever make. such a lofty power should never be in the hands of a mortal, let alone a child. no – max is not to blame, and chloe decides (after months of deliberation and sulking) to not compare herself to those lost. it isn’t, and never will be, fair. she shall choose to struggle against the fate that the world intended for her, be it death or whatever else they had planned. she’ll live, and she’ll live loudly and with pride.
‘ see? pretty. ’ ( karolina to nico <3 )
❛ hmm… i guess it could be… worse. ❜
she does a small spin, the skirt of her turquoise dress flaring outward. it was far from nico’s idea to wear something so… bright, but they needed her in the group that would infiltrate the latest pride gala for information. and she couldn’t dress as she normally did – it would attract too much unwanted attention. so karolina promised to return with clothing that nico wouldn’t absolutely hate. she hadn’t been holding her breath, really, she knew she’d be at least somewhat uncomfortable. yet what she had procured was of decent quality, and not too beyond her tastes. loose-fitting, but tight around the waist; it wasn’t awful.
(she would have preferred something black and strappy, but the idea was to not be recognized.)
nerves bubble up within her, as she mulls over their plan once again. they're supposed to stay low and away from too many of the big groups, and at all costs, avoid their parents should they make an appearance. alex was with their group, too -- he was the one who was to hack into the system and find all the proof they need to finally bring pride to justice. nico would get them in and out of any room with ease, and karolina was their defense should things go awry. if worse comes to worst, nico is certain she can... probably get them back to the hostel in a jiffy.
sighing, she glances back to where she heard karolina’s voice. she’s hovering at the doorway, now, and nico can’t help but smile at the sight of her. all anxieties are forgotten, for the moment. ❛ this sort of thing suits you better, though. ❜ nico says simply. it’s true -- the dress karolina is wearing is a light pink and sleeveless, with gold embroidery across the chest and down the sides. her hair is done up, a slight wave to the parts that fell down the sides of her face. she looks beautiful. nico’s smile softens, and she treads quietly atop the marble floors of the hostel. she leans inwards, pressing a kiss to her cheek. ❛ you’re stunning. ❜ her voice is a hushed murmur, eyes half closed.
they would have to leave soon, and put their lives in danger again to finally find peace. to be free of their parents… once and for all. but in this moment, nico wants simply to be with karolina, to not be burdened by responsibility or worry over anything. all she wants to do now is exist quietly, in this soft embrace.
❛ do you wanna build a snow elf? ❜ (rayla to runaan adksfjdks)
when he had first caught sight of the snowfall last evening, runaan knew exactly what he was bound to wake up to. and this morning, sure enough, a familiar call to his name sparks his attention -- rayla. ‘ runaan! hey, it’s snowing! ’ her eyes wide, she shoots glances to the sky and then back to him, an awestruck smile spreading across her lips. she’s gotten taller, he muses, watching her with an eyebrow raised. he remembered when she barely reached his knees, horns included. now she is standing before him, grown past his waist, and shall grow further still.
rayla’s own voice wrenched him from his thoughts; her not-so quiet pleas of playing in the snow is met with a stern look as he folds his arms across his chest. ❛ --- training first, rayla. ❜ he sighs, though the tenser muscles loosen, and his slight frown dissipates. ❛ there will be time later, for us to build snow elves. ❜ she grins at her victory (she knew by now it was not so difficult to win him over, at least for her) and races past him to the training grounds. children... where they obtain such a constant energy, he had no idea.
gotta go fast !!
please don’t make me leave. ( karolina to nico )
‘ — just go, get out of here! ’ her words were still fresh; they had sliced through the quiet questions karolina had offered nico. she was only concerned, wondering whether she was alright, if she had expended too much of her energy during their last “ outing ”. yet nico lashed out yet again – it was like the staff itself was compelling her to say the worst thoughts aloud, things she didn’t even truly feel. nerves rattle her very bones, her arms, fingers, legs all shaking without control. shuddering breaths leave her lips, unable to find anything to break the silence that had befell them after her outburst. karolina finally speaks, her eyes never once leaving nico’s.
she barely manages to sit properly atop her bed. her legs wouldn’t hold her weight much longer, all strength slowly sapping from her. and this conversation sure isn’t helping… ❛ i – i don’t… want you to see me like this, karrie. i don’t know what’s wrong with me… ❜ fingers balled into fists as she drew her arms across her chest, gaze cast to the floor. ❛ i’m sorry. ❜ she wants to find some sort of justification, any sort of reason for why she’s been acting like this as of late. all her suspicion lie with the staff of one – there was always something off about it (other than the whole it’s actual real-life magic…) that she simply could not place. every time she used it she could feel this lingering sense of emptiness, as though it was hollowing her out from within with each spell, and soon she would be but a shell spurred on by her darkest thoughts. whatever the case… it scared her. she scared her.
vaguely, she notices karolina take a tentative seat beside her, and slowly extend a hand to place around her shoulders. nico leans into the touch, despite the light buzz of pain and anxiety that pulsed down her skin. she is too tired to protest, and she trusts her friends. but… she cannot shake the fear that one day she’ll bring a horrible pain to those she holds most dear – that she’ll cause irreversible anguish. that she’ll become just like her dear mother.
❛ if i ever… ❜ if i ever hurt you, you’ll stop me, right? the words wither before they reach the air. she doesn’t want to worry karolina, more than she already has. and she would much rather enjoy this embrace for as long as she can. thus, her eyes flutter to a close, and she lets out a muffled ‘ never mind ’. if any moment could last forever, she wishes it would be this one.
you shouldn’t have to see all this. ( blake to weiss )
❛ how can you be worried about me right now? ❜ weiss shakes her head in disbelief as she spoke. her eyes flicker to her friend’s face, as though she could find her answer written upon her skin. at their arrival in atlas, she knew there would be troubles after troubles, and she also knew that blake in particular would have a hard time. to hold herself so proudly, as a faunus, was asking for every possible rude comment, for being barred from stores, for discrimination for simply existing. atlas was built upon the backs of blake’s people – that much was clear to weiss now than ever before.
her sharp tone dissipates to that of a soft muttering. ❛ some part of me always knew how awful the faunus were treated here. but i suppose i never realized how bad it was – is. i… didn’t want to believe it. ❜ she shook her head, bringing her gaze up to match blake’s. ❛ but that doesn’t matter. i didn’t try to see, not until you pointed that out to me. ❜ swallowing, she thinks of her father, of how her family will inevitably react. it’s only a matter of time before they’re ushered back to her home (or weiss alone, dragged off away from her friends. this possibility… terrifies her more than anything else) and who knows just how they would receive blake. she didn’t care what her family thought of her, not anymore, but she could hardly bear the thought of them being cruel to her friends. she bit her lip, trying to shake these anxieties from her mind. despite any burdens that weighed upon her, blake had it much worse. she had to remind herself of that.
❛ there’s a lot about atlas i loved as a child, but that doesn’t erase its flaws. however long it takes… i’ll restore my name, and make my home a place where faunus can walk freely. ❜ the fear she sets aside leaves naught but a fierce desire burning in its wake; she will uphold the vow she made before. by her word she swears to bring honour back to the name she bears, and create a legacy that she and her friends could be proud of. until then… no matter if it’s her parents, she will not go without pointing out the injustice they’ve let continue all this time.
