“You’ve got a fever. Of course I’m not going anywhere.” ( chloe to max )
Rain pounds on the window and feeds the vortex swirling in her mind. In her thoughts, Max is shivering and soaked, but at the same time she’s warm– getting warmer, warmer– until the heat is too much to bear; sweat crawling down her face and neck. While she’s vaguely aware of the sheets beneath her, clutched tightly in her fists, she clutches just as tightly to her nightmare. It encompasses her, so much that she accepts it as reality. The wind throws her hair in her face, the trees sway around her. She can’t find Chloe anywhere– she needs to find Chloe– can’t rest until she knows that she’s safe. There’s a crack, the lighthouse falls towards her, and–
‘Stay with me, Max.’
–she feels the urgent but gentle press of something cool against her forehead. A cloth doused in water. Then the pad of someone’s thumb, brushing her bangs out of the way. Max’s heavy eyes finally flit open to find Chloe staring back at her. ❛ Chloe… you’re here. I’m so glad you’re here.❜ She wisps, in a haze, with unbridled relief. In response, Chloe glares in a no-nonsense way that implies she must have been really worried. It anchors her in the present. ❛ You’ve got a fever. Of course I’m not going anywhere. ❜
Max pauses to take in her surroundings, to register that she’s safe in bed. She glimpses the window, the raindrops spilling down over their view of gray clouds. Not in Arcadia Bay, not in the middle of another fucking storm. Not in another reality– or at least she doesn’t think so. Pondering it only makes her head hurt worse. ❛ A fever…❜ She muses quietly. That explains why it feels like she’s locked in a furnace. It makes sense– but is that really all it is? With a soft groan, she rubs a hand down her face. ❛ Shit. ❜
A fever. It’s a problem, but it’s a normal problem. Thank goodness for that.
And most importantly, Chloe’s still here with her.
❛ Sorry. I had another one of those visions. ❜ Max doesn’t elaborate, but Chloe’s eyes go soft with understanding anyway. She’s confided in her ( and only her ) about them so many times before that she knows the gist of it. Arcadia Bay, the storm… the way that her absence tears a colossal hole in Max’s heart. She takes Chloe’s hand in hers. ❛ It felt so real this time, I… ❜
