Heather Stefanson, the leader of Manitoba’s PCs, has launched a new ad campaign promoting her opposition to searching a landfill for the remains of two Indigenous women believed to have been murdered by an alleged serial killer. On Saturday, the Manitoba PCs took out a full page ad in the Winnipeg Free Press as well as site-wide banner ads on the province’s biggest newspaper’s website featuring a sensational and highly unusual campaign message from the incumbent premier, who is currently trailing by a wide margin in the latest opinion polls. “Stand firm,” reads both the print and digital versions of Stefanson’s ad. “For health and safety reasons, the answer on the landfill dig just has to be no.”

In the final days of the provincial election campaign, the Progressive Conservatives posted and quickly yanked an online advertisement that suggests some Manitobans may feel judged for casting their ballot, but they should "vote how you feel, not how others say you should." The video, published on Facebook and Instagram Saturday by the PC Party of Manitoba, sought to convince people to vote with their conscience and not submit to peer pressure because "no one is watching" your vote. A political scientist, however, argues the ad is telling voters they shouldn't be ashamed to embrace some of the Tories' controversial positions during the election campaign. The party has actively campaigned on its opposition to search a Winnipeg-area landfill for the remains of two First Nations women and has been promoting parental rights in schools, which some say could have dire effects on transgender and non-binary students who may feel unsafe to reveal their gender identities at home, said Kelly Saunders, an associate political science professor at Brandon University. It's "basically saying to people, 'Look, you can do things that other people would say are immoral or unethical in terms of your voting decisions, and you can get away with it because the voting booth is private,'" Saunders said. "I think … it speaks to the absolute desperation that the party is feeling."

Around 50 people gathered at Confederation Building in St. John's on Saturday to demand the search of a landfill in Manitoba where the remains of two missing Indigenous women are believed to be buried.

"It needs to be done, we need to stop dehumanizing Indigenous women," said Faye Joseph, a member of Memorial University's Circle of First Nations, Métis and Inuit Students,and the lead organizer behind the protest.

"It has to be done for reconciliation to happen."

Protests have been spreading across the country, with Saturday's rally the latest public call for a search of the privately-run Prairie Green landfill.

The push for a search began last December, when Winnipeg police said they believed the remains of both Morgan Harris and Mercedes Myran were taken to the landfill. Jeremy Skibicki is charged with first-degree murder in their deaths, as well as in the killings of Rebecca Contois and an unidentified woman community members have named Mashkode Bizhiki'ikwe, or Buffalo Woman. Skibicki's trial is scheduled for 2024. [...]

Manitoba Premier Heather Stefanson is being called out by 2SLGBTQ+ advocates for “willful engagement” with far-right movements trying to ban books about LGBTQ and sexual health content in schools.

Stefanson has drawn criticism from the 2SLGBTQ+ community over the PC’s election campaign promise to increase “parental rights” in schools. Manitoba PC MLA Obby Khan even used the “parental rights” slogan on Winnipeg bench advertisements.

While ‘parental rights’ sounds innocuous, anti-LGBTQ advocates have used the term for decades to promote anti-LGBTQ laws in the US and Canada. This week, far-right organizers have planned protests across Canada, including in Manitoba, to oppose LGBTQ and sexual health content in schools.

Counter-protests to support the LGBTQ community on September 20th are also planned across Canada. In Winnipeg, two counter-protests are planned for September 20th and September 24th.

Earlier this year, some Manitoba parents tried to ban books with LGBTQ and sexual health content at the Brandon and Prairie Rose School Divisions. The book bans were rejected after community members held heated debates including a vote in a packed Brandon school gymnasium. [...]

In our July 13 message we expressed that we are deeply concerned with the City and Province’s inability to provide support and closure for families of missing and murdered Indigenous women, girls and 2SLGBTQI+ members of the community. CUPE believes that the Brady site should be thoroughly searched, and we are willing to work with the City and other authorities to provide support and expertise to any organization conducting a search. We have been and are willing to work with the City on any use or redeployment of current staff at the Brady site for the duration of any search. Any search conducted at the Brady site should be conducted by professionals in the field of searching for missing persons, and searchers must be provided appropriate PPE and training, as outlined in the feasibility study. Months after the first calls to search a Manitoba landfill were voiced, a local MP has lodged a written submission to the United Nations. Leah Gazan, MP for Winnipeg Centre, filed her submission to the UN’s special rapporteur on the rights of Indigenous Peoples on July 19, asking for international oversight into what she said was a failure by the provincial and federal governments. This comes after a decision not to search for the remains of two Indigenous women, which led to the blockade and eventual reopening of the Brady Road landfill. Protesters had camped on the road leading up to the landfill since July 6. A blockade that was initially set up outside the main entrance of the site was taken down by police on July 18. It had been set up after Premier Heather Stefanson stated earlier this month that a search of the Prairie Green landfill would not be conducted, saying it would pose a health risk to workers with no guarantee of success. It is at that landfill where Winnipeg police believe the bodies of Marcedes Myran and Morgan Harris remain. Jeremy Skibicki has been charged in their deaths, as well as those of Rebecca Contois, whose remains were found last year at Brady Road, and an unidentified woman Indigenous leaders are calling Buffalo Woman, whose remains have not been found.
