Pretty Little Liars Episode 608 Recap: New Romantics by Heather Hogan on Autostraddle
what she says: i'm fine
what she really means: i AM SO UPSET because the writers are ruining Alison DiLaurentis this season. the alison we knew never put her life or safety into someone else’s hands. she spent 4 full seasons not even trusting her very best friends. alison doesn’t just sit back and let life happen to her. that’s literally the opposite of alison dilaurentis. alison from seasons past would never have believed her dad’s bullshit about charles. she would have investigated it on her own and kept everything she found out a secret she could use to protect herself and the Liars. she would never have let her dad jerk her around from place-to-place and tell her what to do. she would never have asked spencer to put the Liars in harm’s way to help jason. she is a protector of the Liars! even her most monster behavior was about self-preservation and protecting the Liars! this season’s Alison is impotent. that’s not Alison. she had SO MUCH POTENTIAL when they revealed she was still alive but true to the writers, they have watered her down so much instead of keeping her one of the most complex and interesting characters on tv.
Emily and Sara are taking turns having a hundred showers. When Emily returns from one such scrub-a-dubbing, she finds Sara on the phone hollering at her mom about … whatever things a person yells at an imaginary parent. “Oh my god, Mom, I have a new life now, and a career. I dress like a lesbian and take a hundred bubble baths and make fetch empanadas with my girlfriend. No, that’s not a euphemism, Mother. I’m talking about meat-stuffed pastries! Ugh you’ll never understand me I hate you!”

My coming out story
By Mo
On a hot and humid Texas afternoon, a young girl went out to play with Hersheys, her pit-bull puppy. It was a day like any other. There were dragonflies flying low and green grass tickling her feet as she ran through the yard. Panting for breath they both sprawled themselves on the grass, she looked up at the sky and watched the fluffy clouds crawl by. Her breathing eventually evened out but her heart was beating faster than ever. It was silly, Hersheys wouldn’t care, right? He loved her and she knew that, but it didn’t mean that her heart was convinced. She turned her head to see her friend resting on the ground. She took a deep breath, closed her eyes, and in a rushed whisper said those two words that would change everything. There was silence. She could hear her heart and feel the soft fur of Hersheys’ back. She could feel him rise and fall with every breath he took. Slowly she opened her eyes and realized that the world was the same but she wasn’t. She had finally said the words out loud and she hadn’t been struck by lightning, the earth hadn’t swallowed her whole, and she wasn’t on fire. Her faithful furry friend was still there by her side and her heart felt lighter. Those two words changed everything but at the same time everything stayed the same. Saying it once made her want to say it again and again and while she had had the courage to tell her dog, she knew that she didn’t have the courage to say it to a person, but she really wanted to say it again. She went into the house and found her mom’s Chihuahua, Concha. She rubbed Concha’s tummy and whispered those two words into her little ear. It was such a great feeling, being able to say them, to feel the truth and the freedom that they brought. Those two words were powerful, they liberated her but they could also be her undoing. Those two words came with fear and with complications. If she were braver she would be able to say those words to her parents or her sisters or her friends, but those were not easy words to say in Deep South Texas. They were not easy to say to extremely religious people, and saying them to a dog is not the same as saying them to people. In her young mind dogs were the only ones who could keep her secret. When she was ready to tell an actual person it had to be epic because you only get one chance to do it and once you say them there is no going back. She wanted to make sure that she didn’t mess it up, that she had all her bases covered. She took the time to go around to all the neighbors’ dogs and when she visited her aunts and uncles and her grandparents, she would make sure to go and whisper those two little words into puppy dog ears. With time she got bolder and just said the words instead of whispering them. She practiced those two words, sometimes there were three words but she always smiled after, she always felt better after having said them. Big dogs, small dogs, over time she entrusted her truth to dozens of them.
Several years later found her in the middle of a soccer field. The rarely seen rain washed the tears off her cheeks, but there was nothing to drown out her sobs. She sat there in the mud, crying. She didn’t know why she was crying. She just knew that if she didn’t she would explode. Keeping emotions and secret takes its toll and she had kept many of both hidden for years. The rain fell and she cried in that field. She cried until a girl came up to her. Her name was Flor and they weren’t friends. In fact they had never spoken to each other. Flor was a senior and played varsity and she was just a freshman on the JV team. There was no reason for them to be friends. Flor asked her why she was crying but all that came out was a sob. She didn’t know why she cried and she didn’t know how to stop, and Flor was being nice. Flor said it would be okay as she sat next to her and reached out to hug her. She said it would all be okay and she was nice. Nice is what brakes people, it breaks the walls people put up to protect their hearts, and that is what Flor did to her. She was nice. She asked again what was wrong. She asked again why she was crying. Another sob escaped, followed by a whisper. Those two words came out. They didn’t come easily. They fought their way from her heart past that lump in her throat, from the back of her mouth to the tip of her tongue and into a rainy muddy soccer field into the ears of a real person she had never actually talked to. They fought their way out, the words and the girl. They fought their way out into the world when she whispered those two little words, “I’m gay.”
